Check the bulkhead connection. Had a meltdown awhile back.

Just wondering.

When the smoke started appearing, was your car started (ignition key at the "On" position) and running or were you trying to start the car (key at the "Start" position).   The wire from the voltage regulator joins with the wire from the ignition switch at the ballast resistor and that wire runs back to the ignition switch at Ignition 1.  However, Ignition 1 is the circuit used when the engine has started and is running.

Both times, I had been cranking the engine but it wasn't starting.  Both times, I let go of the key and it remained in the "on" position.  That's when the smoke started.

I did pull the ignition switch and test it out.  BATT -> IGN1 only has connectivity when the key is in "on".  BATT -> IGN2 has connectivity only when you hold it in "start".
