Re: 1964 727 Rebuild Questions

This is from a similar conversation here a few years ago:

"Copied this from a older post don't know if it helps. "Frank, I'm not a member of the Slant 6 group, however I receive technical inquiries from members quite often. I'll address your question, however with an e-mail address I could forward a picture of the Torqueflite upper valve body casting showing the necessary factory feed-port location to actuate the part-throttle downshift accessory.

Installing either of the 2 OEM part-throttle accessories onto the 1960-66 Torqueflite valve bodies can be done in 2 ways. Easiest method is to obtain a 1967 (preferable) or 1968 upper valve body casting and simply mate it to the 1960-65 or 1966 lower casting & separator plate. The 1967 casting allows installation of the front pump check valve; the 1968 casting does not. My experience has been that the Torqueflite will operate properly and dependably without the front pump check valve in this case.

To install the part-throttle accessory onto an original 1960-66 upper valve body casting it is easiest to use the 1971+ part-throttle version. The first step is to locate the necessary internal passage in order to access it to obtain the actuating pressure for the part-throttle installation. Once located the internal passage can be accessed externally by "step-drilling" part way into the passage with a 3/16" drill bit modified to a blunt tip and re-sharpened.

The 1971+ part-throttle valve body accessory will also need to be "step-drilled" on the topside to accept a 3/16" tube configured to join it with the new port in the upper casting. Once both new holes are drilled it is a simple matter to fabricate the 3/16" tubing to connect the 2 new ports.

I generally also fabricate a piece of light sheet metal to serve as a clamp to secure the tubing from dislodging from either port. A sealer can be applied to each end of the tubing, however if the fit is tight between tubing and the 2 new holes the P/T should work even with a slight bit of leakage."

Now that sounds right up my alley! I may have to look into that....

That's the cool thing Rich...you don't have too! The simple version is, drop the pan, drop the throttle body, bolt on a part, bolt it back together. It's really pretty easy.

PTKD came on many /6 904's and 72 or 73+ 904's and 727's. Literally ~1/3 to 1/2 throttle, will do a 3-2 kickdown. No need to full throttle mash it for the 3-2. Definitely helps drivability. Worth it IMHO.

Yes I've never heard of the part throttle kickdown and it sounds like something I would really like to have. However I'm not getting this rebuilt again!?

I'd be very interested to hear more about the part throttle kickdown. I am currently waiting for Rick Allison to call me. He has agreed to go through my TF and we have discussed adding the PTKdown. I'm very lucky to live only about 75 miles from his shop.

Hello,

I have a 1964 Belvedere 318 Poly with a 727 transmission that need to be rebuilt.  I'm working with Gary P. to add a little hp to the engine so I want to do some upgrading to the transmission.

I would like to change the input shaft for a newer torque converter.

I would be interested in a mild shift kit.

Are there any internal upgrades that would be recommended?

Looking at the Vendor page here are three that look interesting:

Pat Blais

Frank Lupo

Copeland Racing

Any suggestions or recommendations.  I am planning on the engine and transmission being my winter project.

Thanks
Dennis C.
