RE: Single master cylinder.



Rolled thru an intersection with no brakes once - not a fun feeling. 

 

Sitting is the hardest thing on a mechanical device - just like our human bodies - made for movement.  I don’t go thru a day without stretching and exercising - and hate it in the winter if I can’t get the old cars warmed up at least once a week.............

I agree on the well maintained hydraulic system, but I always thought I took great care of my cars, but had a wheel cylinder blow out on my '63 hardtop once, and that was all it took.  Small reservoir, equals no brakes in no time.  My ragtop now has all new parts, so I feel pretty comfortable. Only problem is with so many of these old cars, they sit a lot, and it's amazing how sitting unused seems to wear things out.  Maintenance never seems to stop does it ?

I ordered a 67 master yesterday from Rock Auto >$21.00. I already had bought a rebuild kit for the cylinder but, honing did not clean it up so I was thinking about filling the pits with JB Weld or actual weld/braze but, decided for the cost to go new dual cylinder.

The safety issue is a long shot in a properly maintained hydraulic system, in my opinion.

I'm not sure you want to hear this but why don't you just take this opportunity to convert this over to a dual chamber master cylinder? I think this starts around 67 or so. If you every lose a brake line with the single cylinder MC, and I have, you've got no brakes. I've taken the position that originality be damned over this minor change in the name of safety.
