Re: Speedometer Cable Leak -- '64 Sport Fury with Automatic Transmission

Mark Wilson hit the nail on the head.  There should be no transmission fluid in the cable, it is kept out by the small lip seal in the end of the speedometer pinion.  There is also an external o-ring on the bung where the cable mates with the tailshaft, change that as well.  Be sure to take care of this ASAP, gravity pulls the fluid to the lowest point, which is the transmission mount flange.  Transmission oil will destroy your mount.

This is how I ended up making transmission mounts, speedmeter cables and other parts - in the 70's I had a '63 Plymouth Fleet Special with a leaky speedometer cable. Over time it took out the transmission mount.  Which let things flap around and broke my '65 tailshaft (2 to be exact), which resulted in updating to a '66-later TorqueFlite, shifted by a B&M Series 60 shifter (which we also build).  Could have all been avoided by replacing the seal instead of trying to seal up the cable that shouldn't have fluid in it anyway (who knew?).

And now you know the rest of the story... replace the seal ASAP.

I have noticed a leak under my car and jacked it up to investigate.

Fluid is red and dripping from near the rear of the transmission.

I crawled under the car and wiped the fluid off the surrounding area

and let it set over night.

This morning it was more apparent where the fluid was leaking from.

I discovered that my speedometer cable has been repaired/patched.

Someone used copper and crimped it around the cable -- maybe to

patch a defective section of the outer cable.

The transmission fluid is leaking out of the patched area (about a foot from the end)

and traveling down the cable and then dripping on the floor.

Not knowing much about speedometers and transmissions -- my question is:

Is it normal for transmission fluid to enter into the speedometer cable?

If so, seems like a patch on the cable is a temporary fix and the cable

needs to be replaced.

Any one know a source for a NOS or repopped speedometer cable?

Doug
