Re: Welcome new member - 1964 Imperial /pushbutton question

Frank,  It's tight under there for sure.  I use needle nose pliers because if I don't I almost always launch the little clips into places they'll never be found.  As far as the overcenter spring goes, if you can get sufficient room to maneuver, you can hook the new spring into the park lock lever, then take your pliers, grab the opposite end of the overcenter spring, and you can twist it into the eye on the steel bracket.

I had to laugh, I kept a #2 pencil in my ashtray and wedged it between two of the shift buttons to keep the park lock lever up until I had time to change the overcenter spring.  Good luck!

I do have a 64 shop manual... Page 21-43 #(6) states "and disconnect the gearshift parking lock cables from the control unit." After performing #5, the opening in the metal dash framework is small... Any tricks on how to get to the clips on the cable ends?... And then how to refit the clips back on after reattaching the sheaths to the control unit?... By the way, this R & R is necessary due the "overcenter spring breakage, allowing the "Park" lever flop loosely..... Any one have experience when attempting this fix?... Thank you all. Welcome. Do you happen to have a 1964 Chrysler Factory Service Manual? The procedure may be in there.

I'm thinking the 1964 Imperial used a similar pushbutton design as the 1964 Dodge B-body visually. Perhaps the trick is
to disconnect the cables and pull the unit into the passenger compartment? Anyone know?

Thanks,
Gary H.
