Removal of fuel sender

Hello all,

I’m sure many hear have removed the fuel send on the 62-65 b bodies.
Anyone have a sense of how low the fuel in the tank needs to be from full in order to remove?
And what is he hold down mechanism for the locking ring? From angle it looks like I can keep the tank in place ?

Any feedback would be great.

Thanks
