I never have Had any overheating or cooling problems.  

All the input you bro’s have given is useful and what I had been doing so that is comforting.

The stacked fin design such as the B&M trans coolers provide the most heat exchange/fluid cooling, come in assorted sizes to meet all driving/racing needs and are worth the investigation.  In my 340 Dart GT, I employ a “stealth” cooler wherein I converted an OEM A/C condenser into a transmission cooler mounted in the stock position behind the grill/in front of the radiator.  Under the driver side fender is mounted an external trans fluid spin-on filter & temp line to my transmission temp gauge in the cab…MSD 6al box resides under the driver side fender as well.  My normal in town driving trans temps are consistently around 165-170F and never peak above 190F when “racing” or “spirited street driving” and cool safely back to 170F-180F after runs almost as quickly as they increased.  The huge A/C unit, added trans line footage & filter, and deep pan in my race-prepped 904 w/10” 3500 stall convertor provide a great deal of fluid capacity to afford these “safe” temperatures.

Amen on the trans cooler with fan comment.  I (stubbornly) ran a cooler without a fan on my Fury and like the moron I am burned my fluid literally the first time I took it to the track.  Clutches were damaged and the thing leaked afterward.  Expensive lesson learned.

 

Also, I am pretty anal about logging data on runs and experience big (by bracket racing standards) differences in ETs depending on trans temp - as much as a tenth or more.  In an attempt to be consistent, I try to heat my trans up to operating temp before actual runs.  Fortunately our track let’s us run “mini-launches” way at the run-off end of the track before time trials.  (Or at least they don’t stop us :-) anyway.). I guess my point is cold is not good for transmissions, either.

 

Long story short I now run a Derale fanned cooler to keep it from overheating and consistent at the top end.  I also run an external filter and change that sucker often, if that helps. 

 

Regarding fluid type, ATF4 came out in 1998 so I suppose it would be OK in an old 727 but again, Dex/Merc meets the Dexron III spec which I believe is more than sufficient for a unit originally built in 1962.  Unless it is tricked out or something, I suppose.  As usual, more details would be helpful.

Race-Mart:  With that being said, what is the normal operating temperature for a transmission?

JW:  Normally, transmissions should be operated in the 160 to 200 degree F range. An operating temperature over 200 degrees F is too hot. Excessive temperatures will start to create heat damage to the clutches and bands as well as prematurely break down the transmission fluid. We strongly recommend using a transmission cooler with a fan for vehicles that typically put a lot of strain on a transmission such as heavy or towing vehicles and any form of race vehicle. Also keep in mind that for every second a car is at wide open throttle with a trans-brake the temperature will rise 100 degrees F."
