RE: Rusted freeze plugs - now what?

Evaporust makes thermocool that eats the rust in the cooling system. It works good I used it in one flush and it cleaned good but I thought I should have left it in longer or done 2 flushes. As for the freeze plugs remove the debris and clean the seal part. Otc and snapon make an install tool for freeze plugs it helps big time. I use the brass plugs and I use rtv on the sealing part. As mentioned fog the the cylinders and turn the engine over by hand. You should be good.

Subject: Rusted freeze plugs - now what?

About 5 years ago, we parked my 1962 Sport Fury outside, it hasn't been touched or driven since then.  There was a freshly rebuilt 440 engine in it, but the block didn't have any coolant / water in it, and the radiator cap was left off (hood was always closed though)..  Today we pulled it into the garage to pick up where we left off, and were shocked to discover that 3 of the 6 freeze plugs on the sides of the block had rusted clean through.

We're a bit stunned - we're in Montana in a pretty dry climate, but there must have been enough residual water or moisture in the system somewhere to do this (???)

I'm wondering how much we need to dig into the engine to check for more rust.  I suspect the crankcase might be OK, but wondering about the cylinders - we might get one of those bore cameras to check them out.

I'd appreciate any insight on whether you've seen this happen before, and any advice on what to look out for & how to make sure the block is cleaned out.

Thanks much - Wade
