Re: aluminum wheel polish/preservative

Back in the 90’s I refurbished a set of 1957 DeSoto wheel covers.  I found a set in Mina Arkansas.  Paid $150 each.  They were worth $500 each when I got done.

After I took all the dents out and filled in all the hundreds of pinholes created by dogs peeing on them over the years I wanted to refinish them.

They used Gold anodizing in the original process.  But I could not anodize because that process would destroy the stainless steel parts of the wheel covers.

What we did was dip them in nickel plating, and threw some copper into the vat.  That turned the nickel into a gold color that looked perfect on the wheel covers.

I painted the centers gloss black leaving the Des center gold.  Then applied a clear coat lacquer finish.  Believe it or not.  I never had to polish them they always looked new.  Even after 5 years of driving and all the car shows.

You might try a lacquer finish?

I wanted to show pictures of the car and wheels but they are all on 35 millimeter slides.  I thought I had a picture on this iPhone in the biz zillion pictures of cars I restored, but could not find it.  There is one, it’s with the the Lakester I used to run in the 99’s on the salt flats I cannot find that either.

Anyway that was my experience.

Mothers mag polish or adams metal 1 and 2 polish. If you dont drive in the snow or rain just polish once or twice a year is fine.

Subject: aluminum wheel polish/preservative

Hi all.  Been a long winter. Time to get cracking on my mopars again. I picked up a set of old school 5 spoke aluminum one piece mags. I want to put them on my 65 coronet. They weren't too bad , but I set to cleaning up the outer rim and first step. The spokes will be painted gray , ala torq thrust look. I decided to just sand the first step and worked  up to 320 grit.  But the very outer  rim  , I wanted much smoother and starting with a flap disc and  then worked my way up to 1200 grit wet/dry. They look pretty darn good. But what do I put on them to keep them from tarnishing or corroding or  oxidizing or whatever you want to call it. Do I do some kind of clear coat or is there some kind of polish/ wheel dressing that does it.
  Thanks ,
Neal Zimmerman, Eugene Oregon
