Usually nothing serious happens when a car is driven a little bit without power steering fluid. In my case, however, I once purchased a '73 Duster that had no power steering belt. The previous owner told me the pump locked up and he simply removed the belt and had been "strong arming" it for a year. The pump was frozen, so I cored it for a good one. Once I filled and bled the system, it worked fine for a few days. Then the box started leaking like crazy and the weheel became difficult to turn to the left, even worse than when I drove the car home without the belt. The box was a mess inside and everything was gummed up and there were metal shavings inside. I had to get another box.
