On some of these cars, the vacuum activated doors work in conjunction with the fan by pushing one button. For example, push "Defrost" and the vacuum operated deflector will move in conjunction with motor coming on. But I'd have to hear the "thud" in order to know if it is a vacuum operated door closing or the fan blade hitting something. If the motor is good and the fan blade is obstructed, however, you'd probably hear a humming noise from the fan motor then the circuit breaker or in line fuse would blow.
