Doing a cold versus hot will tell you by differences how much bore wear you have. However, Hot compression will tell you ring sealing, no matter what the bore profile looks like, and is the more preferred way to do it. Best test is do it hot "dry", and then then "wet" (put a little oil in the cylinders). This will tell you valve and ring sealing leakage percentage(dry test), and valve seat leakage contibution to the total (the wet test).
