Having done this on my 56, if i remember right, the axles both must be centered. If not one of them pushes on a 'spacer block' (my term) that 'floats' inside the differential. If there is pressure on this block from one side, there will be noise and/or uneven wear. The shop manuals arent too great on all this, it helps to have one from Chrysler models, they are a bit more complete.
