Putting 3.55 sure grip into original 8 3/4 housing in my 59?

I have a 59 Coronet 2 door hardtop with a 413 and aluminum torqueflite, with the original 8 3/4 rear and 3.31 open gears (car was originally a 326/powerflite). I know I can just swap the whole rear for a later 8 3/4 and get rid of those tapered axles in the process, but I'd kind of like to keep the original housing/axles/brakes. My question: I have a 3.55 sure grip chunk. Can I just put this in the 59 rear end? Reason I ask is I seem to recall reading somewhere that the old tapered-axle 8 3/4 rears used different length axles for sure grip than for open chunks. Is this true, and if so, which had the longer axles, sure-grip or open? If the open gear axles were longer, can they just be machined a little shorter and used with a sure-grip chunk?
