Location: cornpatch county, Southwest IOA | Those stations are way cool John--The Phillips is very similar to one that has been restored in my area. Just yesterday I was talking to a guy about how Phillips got started and he says Phillips was born just 10 miles from here and got his start in the town where that station is --Creston, Iowa
BTW did you see my post to you that that guy in Grant City, Mo. that had the auction your man attended-is going to have another one a year from now................................5%.................. |

Location: Williams California | Summit near Oatman, Arizona. This portion of old 66 was torture on any vehicle with cooling system or brake problems, as the road climbed roughly 15 miles at a 10% grade. Constant switchbacks where 5 MPH was as fast as the road would allow. In the dust bowl days, folks leaving Oklahoma would actually drive this part backwards, as the gearing in their vehicles would allow them to climb the grade. It was 105 degrees when we made the climb. ---John

Location: Williams California | Neat looking neon at the Blue Swallow motel in Tucumcari New Mexico on old 66. Tucumcari used to advertise "Tucumcari Tonight, 2000 motel rooms" for quite a few years along the highway on countless billboards, but alas, there are less than 1200 available nowadays. Many of the motels have been abandoned since interstate 40 took away much of the customer traffic. The Blue Swallow soldiers on, and is more popular than ever. ---John

Location: Williams California | Roy's in Amboy California, built in 1959. The local sherriff told us that Roy's was a booming travel stop in the '50's and 60's, but Roy, the founder, died towards the latter part of that decade. His son in law, Buster, took over, and ran the majority of the town. When this desert section of the route was bypassed by Interstate 40, traffic slowed to a trickle as it had done elsewhere. Buster was so disgusted that he hopped on to a bulldozer and leveled most of the town, and remained bitter for years, running off the few remaining travellers. Today, Roy's is in the process of being restored.

Location: central oklahoma! | john, i am SO glad you are publishing this thread!!
by the way, i have a public apology to make to j.w. and his wife, judy.
while we were in bristow, i failed to point out the COOLEST site to any mopar fan, the old chrysler/plymouth dealership on 9th street, east of main. bristow (where we ate at russ' ribs......yummy!) was actually the site of THREE different chrysler "motor agencies", as my old friend arthur foster would say. ALL THREE are still visible today: the original, on 7th street, just west of the post office (ancient wall mural still visible and legible, though faded); the "new" one on 9th street, with the beautiful 1940s architecture (ceramic and glass blocks, as well as a GIANT tower that reads "chrysler" and "plymouth"), and the johnny-come-lately on the west side of town, crown chrysler-dodge-jeep, a five-star dealership. crown was the only one you saw, and i apologize for not thinking about the rest. unfortunately, i was busy trying to not screw up as tour guide, which i managed to do. however, i did the best i could, and am glad i made the effort. next time, i'll do better, i promise! |

Thanks, Mark, although the paint is nothing fancy, just single stage Centari enamel, and the color red happened to be one that I liked in a paint chip book. [I believe that it was listed as an AMC product factory color]. ---John |
