Location: Williams California | I bought two '58 Dodges yesterday, one of which was this sweptside truck. Does anyone have an idea of production of this model? I've looked through some of my books and cannot find the answer to that question. ---John

I'm not nearly as familiar with trucks as I am with cars, but I'd think that auto trans. in ANY '50's truck is rare in itself, much less top-of-the-line 3-speed torqueflite.
Not bad at all. Interior floor looks solid and the only real rust issue I see is in the bottom passenger rear quarter behind the wheel. What's the bed like?
There's someone here that put up exterior pics of their restored Canadian '58 Fargo Sweptside within the past month and a half that's nearly identical to yours. I'll see if I can search the thread out..... |

I took a little closer look at the overall condition of the body, and really, it is not bad. The wood in the bed floor has rotted away, and there is a slight bow in the front panel from objects rolling around in it. Looks to be fairly complete, outside of a couple trim pieces and underhood components. ---John |

Location: Williams California | Here's the other Dodge-a 2-door sedan. Floors are rusted out, and appears to have been used for a donor car. Probably best used for parts. Also, a '58 wagon that was relatively complete. ---John

Is it a Custom Royal? Or a Spring Special Coronet maybe? Can't see any script..... |

I like black-and-white 2 dr sedans, I always imagined them as the perfect everyday city cruisers (altough most of the grocery getters seem to be ordered in green). Speaaking about that color scheme - have seen a Sweptside in black with white or light beige, don't remember now - very impressive view. The pics are still somewhere over the web.
And those poor Canadians were not only "mercifully" spared of the regular USA-fins by the creations of Plodges, now it seems that the curved big back window for trucks also wasn't considered good thing for Canadian market by ChryCo. |

1958 was the only full year of production for the Dodge Sweptside. I have info from two fellows whose fathers owned dealerships back in the 50's and they both maintain that Dodge made at least one of these for each dealer.... I think there were something like 800 or 900 dealers at that time.... Total production of 1/2 ton 2 wheel drive Dodge pickups what only about 9,000 or 10,000 in total.... I cannot imagine that 1 out of every 10 was a Sweptside.... if so, then maybe 1000 or so were made in 58. 1957 was only a partial year of production and they quit making the 59's in mid-January of that year.

That sedan is a perfect example of what I was saying, about Spring Specials, over on the GEN DISC board; that anyone
could have a dealer (or, they could buy the individual parts over-the-counter, & do-it-themselves) install whatever S.S.
accoutrement that they wanted, to be put onto their car.
This car looks to have had only the popular side-trim be installed on it, post-production.
Interestingly, this car ALSO has the new-for-58 "Saddle-Trim" paint scheme.
I think I see straight-across upper seat-backs, so, the car apparently wasn't built as a Custom Coronet (sub-model).
As a Coro sedan, it would not have the Lance-and-Shield emblems on it, but, John, can you see any drillings, on the fender
where the "Coronet" nameplate would have been installed???
Maybe you could send me a good pic of its Paint/Trim plate?
BTW, a V/8-Torquey-flight Sweptwing is very-desireable; they DID make 6-cylinder models of it!
Was it red/white??
A LOT of Dodge truck pieces are on Epay, nowadays!!

coverings, anywhere from the area beneath the driver's footwell, to across-the-trannie-hump, too)
Some B-Sheets have been found, lying on the floor, toward the rear seat area (where they were "tossed", by some body-
finish-inspector, before the interior was installed!

Yep. I can personally attest to that.
The '59 Fury I came thisclose to owning in '97 - I found the build sheet for her (in the process of cleaning her up - she'd sat as a general discard box for longer than I'd care to speculate) underneath the rear seat carpet padding on the driver's side. |

Neil, I'll have to do a bit of looking to see if there were any broadcast sheets, and I'll get back to you with some pics of the P/T plates.
The VIN# on the sweptside truck is located on the left frame horn, just behind the bumper bracket.
I sent Gary a list of cars that I was interested in, but I never heard back from him. He was quite busy selling his cars, I would imagine. ---John |
