My 11 year old son Jordan and I built this 1957 300-C over the past couple of weeks, we both did some glue, assembly and paint work. I haven't done one in years, in fact this model has been sitting in our basement for about 5 years. Its an ERTL 1/25 scale and still currently available - you can even buy it built. My son has been pestering me for a long time to build it so I finally said yes, and we had fun doing it together. The paint color isn't correct I know, but its what I had sitting on the shelf. I have a number of other FL models that I built in the early eighties - 1960 DeSoto, 1959 Dodge CR, 1959 Chrysler NYer, 1960 Plymouth wagon, and a 1962 Chryler 300.

Anyone else out there into building these ?

Hell of a nice job! I approve of the colour (looks the same as my roof)! I used to do models, and have been searching for a model of a 57-8 Plymouth/Dodge...know where you can get the 300 like yours??

I think it is neat! I have been collecting models since 1949. I still have 2 of them my dad bought me at the Chicago Museum of Science and Induastry--a 49 Plymouth, and a 49 ford. I have a bit over 1300 in the basement. If I can figure your email address, I'll send you some pics of my basement.

The 300-C is still in hobby shops, also is quite often on Ebay.

I have been building models for along time, one of my current projects pics is somewhere in the mess of the new wreck room. I will finish it someday, It is a 58 Belvy turned into a 58 Fury lowrider. I like to do alittle custom work on some of my kits. I have been looking for the 300 model for the past few months, but have not been able to find it around here. Wal-Fart had it not to long ago. Your car looks great by the way.

Here is the link to that thread, my pics are bad dark and makes the car look bad, you just can't see the detail. It is still not finished. It can take me upto a year to finish a car. I am slow and don't have much time anymore.

What's a good source for models. I have been looking for years for a
'59 Dodge model, at car shows and swap meets and have yet to find one.
If I could find one, I could put it on my Christmas list that I send out to
my family every year.

Did anybody ever do a 57 Dodge ? I can't believe Franklin and Danbury have completly ignored these cars. They have done Plymouths and Chryslers and Desotos but no 57,58 or 59 Dodges. In fact I don't think anybody has. I did see a resin 57 Dodge once on e-bay but it was 1/43rd scale which is pretty small, I would love to have a 1/24 or larger, anybody know of any?

LARRY.. Stop Looking, They Do Not list any for a 59 Dodge, The Only Model i have found available is the Promo , They show up occassionally on US Ebay, But most are Warped, and if they are good condition, they sell for a couple hundred $$$$$$$ at least.. I too have been searching for a few Years, I have had a few Stores check it out on the Web, and they all say Not Listed..

Hey Guys ,keep looking. the Johan 59 Dodge was re-issued by Excel plastics as an unassembled Promo in a plain white box. They are molded in modern plastic and do not warp! There were a lot of them around Carlisle maybe 8-10 years ago for about$12.00each. I have a 56 Desoto and a 56 olds from the series but unfortunately not the 59 Dodge. Dick W.

You can also find 59 Dodges with interiors!

Do an evilpay search for 1/25 scale models (Dodge/what-ever) & your search-list should be very short.

There are resin-formed 1/25 scale Dodge models, but, resin-models can be roughly molded, and this one will require the
grille/bumpers to be sent out, for plating.

There is a company, forget its name, which made museum quality 1/25 Dodge models; but, to its credit, makes/made only
real limited-production models; once a car is produced, no more of that particular model is made.

You will see 57 CRL convertibles, bringing hundreds-of-dollars, on the 'pay, occaisionally.

I built all the Jo-han FL models nearly 20 years ago and still have them on display today. I used to be a very skilled model builder so these models are very nicely done. I have the newer AMT models mentioned above, but I just can't motivate myself to build them. I have not built a model since the early nineties!

Does anyone know if you can buy spare parts for the Danbury mint models? I would love to get some extra mirrors since the original mirrors on my Jo Han models fell off ages ago!

Thanks for posting this thread Ian! Here is my AMT '58 Belvedere modeled to look like my canyon gold and iceberg white Belvedere coupe. I thought the suspension assembly was particularly difficult. Also, the interior was from a Fury, so I had to sand it down and paint it to look like the Belvedere interior. That was tough too. I left the side windows out. My two-year old son got his little crumb-snatchers on it and broke the antenna, lost a wheel cover, and lost the air cleaner - but all of that is fixable and I will have it done soon. I think he and I will do the parts car together. It should be a fun project for us.

Those are some cool models!  I know its not FL, but when I was 18 I built a 450SLC model that took me one year to build.  It was about 10-11" long, I don't remember the scale (maybe 16th?).  I actually had my friends Dad paint it actual Ford Red in his shop's spray booth and hand polish the finish.  The guy used to have a polaroid of it sitting on a table in the middle of his full size spray booth!  He had to spray it fine coat by coat so the real car paint wouldn't screw up the plastic body, but it worked.  Had felt covering the floors, package tray and sun visors.  It had spring loaded suspension and front wheels that turned by the steering wheel.  The trunk was sprayed in actual trunk liner spray.  I wired in red bulbs in the taillights and under the dash and white bulbs in the headlights (the kit had no provisions for lights).  It was hand pin stripped by a local guy that did stripping and murals.  I put a lot of work into it and unfortunately, gave it to a young teen my family knew a couple years after it was finished and he had it broken within 2 months.  Wish I had pics of it, I was so proud of that model.

Nice Plymouth !!!    I pulled a couple more out of my cabinet, ones I could reach without a ladder.  The 1960 DeSoto, a Jo-Han reissue is based on a 4 door sedan in the same color I owned in 1977,  there was a thread on it a few weeks ago,  the car has re-surfaced ( ChrycoPsycho found it ) but was left under a tree for 10-15 years so its rotted out.   The model was incorrectly supplied with dual in line four barrels.

The 1959 Dodge is also a Jo-Han reissue of a promo and has no interior.

Last ones for tonight !!!   This 1959 New Yorker is also a Jo-Han reissue of a promo, ( I painted all of these - they usually come white plastic with a contrast color ).   This is based on a 1959 Windsor I owned in 1980-82.

Ian, I think you are a lot more talented than I am at building those things! Very impressive. I can confirm that building a model based on your own car is a lot of fun. I have the Danbury Mint 58 Fury, which has tremendous finish and detail, but I always prefer to look at the gold and white Belvedere that I built and painted to my own standards! I wish AMT made a 58 Dodge.

Well, I've added a few since last post. The last model I actually built, and I think I'm calling it quits on building them is the 1959 Imperial. It's easier to order nicely built models from Danbury Mint!!

The 57 and 58 New Yorkers are Danbury
The 60 300-F is Yat-Ming
The 56 300-B is Maisto

Oops, I almost forgot my 300-C by ERTL 1/18 scale This is probably the most detailed model I've ever seen. The Danbury 57 and 58 New Yorkers are a close second, but they're 1/24 scale.

I live in michigan and don't have a heated garage so models are a good way to get my FL fix
during the winter months.
I turned this 300 into a conv. but the paint didn't turn out well so it became a junker project.
Still a long way to go on this one but here it is so far. It's actually ALOT more work to make
one of these junkers than a nice car.

He may have got it from this model, which was on Ebay a few years ago.

I like that blue 300! It looks to be a really good job, but I hadn't seen that one before.

A bad paint job literally was the deciding factor in this becoming a junker. The closest paint color I could find to
gaugin red turned out to have a skin like texture when applied. I tried clear coat but the two paints weren't compatible
and it looked even worse. I bought model paint stripper but it didn't work on the odd fluorescent color.

I had built an Edsel junker and even won a contest with it years ago. I think it irritated the other people who entered highly
polished models! The Edsel and 300 damage is modeled after several thrashed FL's I found rotting in some swampland so the
decay is accurate.

It's fun making these junkers, just figuring out how to make the damage. Crushed rock salt for shattered glass, painted hairs for
wires and napkins and TP for headliner and seat material with shredded cotton ball coming through. Worn vinyl is made by applying
thinner to paint till it wrinkles. Dullcoat, cigarette ash and paint thinner residue mix well for body crud.

The 300 still has a long way to go before being finished, applying the crud in layers is the trick to making it look right.

The Edsel fell off its shelf and needs to be repaired but here it is...

I had a good laugh when this 300 showed up in the ebay section of our website, it's nearly a duplicate of the model I'm making!

You guys are funny. I was thinking "nerd factor" when this thread started, but now that we've
graduated to wrecking yard and field relic models, I am pretty dammed impressed ! Kinda makes
me sick looking at them though ... they are TOO accurate !

AND, to clarify my post above, I don't so much agree with the "nerd factor" (maybe cuz
I'm a nerd . . . ) but the "Kinda makes me sick looking at them though ... they are TOO accurate !"
is what I agree on -

I built a ton of models as a kid with my dad - all got thrown out - might have a few left -
gotta go to moms and see . . .

I do have a few yet to build, just don't have the time . . .

That Edsel is mighty fine work too! Here's another junker 300 model I found, difference is that this one appears to be a non-rusted, solid restorable California car !!! This model appears to be an altered Franklin or Danbury Die-Cast - not a plastic kit.

Wonder if he would part out that 300?

Looks like a mint condition power seat, there, and the P/windows are probably fine, too.

Awesome thread!

I`ve been building models since...I don`t remember...

Well anyway, here are a couple that I have built. The 1960 DeSoto and the 1962 Chrysler are built for decades ago... Must of been somewhere in the late seventies or early eighties, can`t remember... (Just look at the wheel and tire combos...)

The Imperial -59 is being built at he moment, it isn`t finished yet. Me and my son, who I`m passing on this "building-madness" to, have built it together and it`s quite fun when we build these models and to pass the knowledges to him. I hope he gets a fun hobby out of this, as it has to me.

Here are some pictures;

Imp610, your 59 Imperial is the same one that I recently built, pictured further above.... I found that the wheelbase is a little too short and the rear wheels sit too far forward in the fenders, and the tires are too small but other than that its not too badly detailed. This one was my first attempt using bare-metal foil on the chrome trim. They make it sound so easy and say its easier than painting on silver paint but in reality I found it harder than silver-painting the trim, but it definitely looks nicer than silver paint.

Yes the wheelbase seems too be a bit wrong, when I was studying the model I didn`t notice it at first but when assembled we were in for a surprice... :-D Seems like the bottom-platform is a bit slipped to the front because the front wheels are too forward also to my opinion... Well anyway, otherwice it`s a nice model if you don`t mind that little flaw.

I have also started to use bare-metal foil or actually in my case I`ve used aluminium-tape which is a bit thicker and its because it don`t rip as easy as bare-metal foil. And at the other side, it`s cheaper too...

This thread makes me wan`t to start on the next projects I have going on, the 1958 Fury and the 1957 300C;s, I only have problems on deciding which colours I will paint them... Can`t make my mind which colours to use... The Imperials colour shown above was easy, I used rattle-can paint that I have for my daily user (1997 Neon), I just love the colour... It`s called "Pearl Amethyst"...

I am another one who loves doing model cars. I have over a dozen waiting to be done. The list includes Forwardlook cars such as the Chrysler 300, Plymouth Belvedere and 1959 Imperial, plus a number of Charger, Coronet and Belvedere/Satellite models covering 1966 through 1972. Unfortunately they are all in storage in Vancouver, so they won't get done until I move back there.

Had a number of 1960's models I wished I never tossed - 1960 Valiant (black), 1960 Plymouth Sport Suburban (gold & white), 1960 DeSoto (red), 1962 Valiant (light blue), 1962 Plymouth Fury convertible (green), 1962 Dodge Dart 440 (red), 1962 Imperial (black), 1964 Imperial (turquoise), 1965 Barracuda (gold), and 1968 Charger (yellow with a drop of orange added to the mix). Older models were 1928 Ford Model A, 1931 (?) Chrysler Imperial, 1936 Ford, 1937 Packard, 1940 Ford, 1941 Plymouth, three 1952 Chevrolets (grey 2-door Fleetline, yellow Styleline convertible, blue Bel Air hardtop), 1956 Ford convertible, and 1957 Ford Fairlane.

Being a 'nerd' my cars have interiors that match the exterior colours and are along the theme of the factory offerings. My 1977 Dodge Monaco model was painted the same interior and exterior colours as my one and only new car - a 1978 Dodge Monaco Brougham coupe, Jasmine Yellow exterior with autumn gold upholstery. Have used Duplicolor rattle can touchup paints for a few models over the years.

Never used the foil for the trim, always used the silver paint. Being stuck with bifocals now, doing side trim with paint is not as easy as it once was so I might try the foil or aluminum tape instead.

Chrycoman you MUST try the bare metal foil. I wouldn't even bother building a 1950's car model
if this stuff didn't exist.

I've tried other brands but Bare Metal by Bare Metal Foil Co. is by far the best. Stay away from
the 'high shine' version though. It's too shiny and harder to work with. Be sure to use a brand new
blade when cutting this stuff, a dull blade will just tear it and make a mess. LIGHTLY cut around the
contours and the results will be spectacular.

This stuff works on real cars as well. The chromed plastic on my 57 Plymouths turn signal lenses had
worn off on the inner edges so I put on some bare metal foil and it looks great. Hardly noticable and
I'm not sure how long it will last but it works for now.

I built the 59 imperial kit as well. The wheels are garbage. I adjusted the ride height and used wheels
from a 300 kit and it looks much better. Probably the first time in history a 300 has been used as a parts car!!!

The bare metal foil worked well on this sport tone trim as well. Silver paint on the inside and foil on the
surrounding trim gives it an authentic look. Although the model company horribly botched the shape of
the sport tone in my opinion.

Jason... Is that the AMT Plymouth ?. I've heard a lot of criticism about that particular model, in that the body dips down behind the rear of the doors, giving the bodyline a 'banana' bend, & the engine seems to be a cross between a 350 & a 318. I've seen one fixed, but it was a heck of a lot of work. It involved cutting off the roof, cutting the dody in half behind the doors, jacking the arse end up so the bodyline was right, then filling in the 'pie shaped' piece that was formed behind the doors & re-attaching the roof. The good thing about the AMT 58 Belvedere though is the AMAZING detail of the chassis, floorpan & engine compartment. I've always wanted to build a 24th scale of my full size ride with fine under side & engine bay detail, so I decided to use the AMT 58 Plymouth as the base for the 59 Dodge Johan re-issue body. I've cut the hood out of the Dodge & cut the engine bay from the Plymouth. As the Dodge has a 122" wheelbase, the Plymouth's 118" wheelbase had to be lengthened which was acheived by sectioning the chassis & floorpan behind the rear seat step up. The dodgy engine was cut from the Plymouth's transmission which was then mated to a 'correct' 383 from a Revell kit that has received the 58 Plymouth's sump . The heater on the firewall was also cut & filled to more closely represent the 59's heater box, but still needs more work till I'll be happy with it. I have a photo etched hood hinge kit for it, & it will receive a Modelhaus resin interior & dash. Modelhaus have also supplied the chromed tail light housings & correct 59 spinner hubcaps. I'll post some more pix when it gets a little closer to being finished.

I LOVE IT !!!
those "junker" models are AWESOME !!!

anybody can just "put together" a model, what you have there takes TRUE TALENT!...

I just finished this 1957 Desoto Fireflite Explorer wagon from Modelhaus with a few modifications made to the body and chassis to get the wheels to fit.  Exterior paint is House Of Kolor Sunset Pearl Orange with plain white spears.  Interior is medium saddle from Model Car World Automotive Finishes.  20" wheels by Aoshima.  Pegasus Hobbies 19" disc brake rotors and calipers.

There is a 57 Dodge in a series called M-2 Machines. They are about 1/64 scale. You find them on Ebay all the time for under $10.

A company called Round 2 Models is re-issuing the Christine diecast with the working lights but they are going into more details like the correct interior, they are also selling them higher than the original price and lower then the ones people see on Ebay now.

I haven't built anything lately but picked up a Danbury Mint 56 DeSoto. They also have this one in the Adventurer in black/gold.

I also found out a few days ago from Rick Hanmore who's in charge of new Danbury Mint car diecast projects that the 57 Imperial project they had been working on has been cancelled. Rick said " I am sorry to report that the factory that was developing that model, (and many of our other projects ), has been closed by the Chinese gov't, an issue that has to do with rising labor rates in that country. We have lost a lot of our tooling for die cast cars because of this. We are still working on a few projects, but all of the new cars that were in development are no longer available to us. I am as disappointed as you that the Imperial model has been, (at least for now), cancelled. It was one of my pet projects."

This is a cool thread! I'm 42 now,I still have most of the models that I built in the late 70's and 80's many are Jo-Han Mopars, Used to sit in my room and listen to Doo Wop and Jazz (Philly radio stations etc) Now my two children love to listen to the same music and build models, funny how strong the genes are LOL.

I've been building model kits since I was 5.

Here's a '58 Fury I custom built for John (BigM). Started out as an AMT Belvedere kit.

It did actually start out as a nice Fury...but then the car got parked!

I'm currently working on a replica of the Saratoga, but the model itself is a New Yorker, a vintage JoHan issue with new grille and bumper assemblies from Modelhaus. The chassis is incorrect, it shows a full frame instead of unibody. I'm waiting on a set of wire wheels with whitewall tires to come. I'm using actual left over paint from the car. The model doesn't have the bird-bath deck lid either.

Since there are 2 threads on models, and I started my models in this thread, I'll finish this one here too.

I bought this on Ebay before Christmas, it's an old JoHan kit that didn't get built, so I've been working on it off and on since then to somewhat match my Saratoga ( Stella) . The paint is actual paint left over from my car. I sprayed the model, then wet-sanded it with K&S Sanding Film from the hobby shop, then cut polished it with Novus fine scratch remover. The wheels are Danbury-Mint issue reproductions of Chrysler wires. They didn't come with the kit. This is my second attempt with Bare Metal Foil, and I have to say that I am not great at applying it, ( eyesight and steadiness of hands :stressed:?) and if I ever build another model, ( likely not ) I'll go back to silver paint for the trim. I used silver paint on some of the finer items on this. This model didn't come with an opening hood and engine. The other thing is that this is a New Yorker, my own car is a Saratoga - so this doesn't have the side color sweep like my car - Nor does it have the toilet seat deck lid, which was optional on all models.

Brent, the car is actually ( proportionally), 4 inches too short - on the front end - not the rear. The mold was made, I believe, from the same basic mold that JoHan did the 1960 Adventurer from. The REAL Adventurer and the New Yorker are on different wheelbases, ADV is 122, NYER is 126. I happen to have the 1960 Adventurer JoHan model right here to compare with, and there's no difference in the distance from the front door to the front fender opening on the 2 models, or the overall length, for that matter. The New Yorker should have the extra four inches in that area ahead of the front door.

The wire wheels are from Danbury Mint, and are for a 1/24th scale model not a 1/25th scale so they are a tiny bit too big .....

The rear clip seems to be in proportion, at least to me. Maybe it's the photo. In reality, if you look at the real car, you can actually see that it is a "long hood-short deck".... hard to believe - but the fins give it the illusion / appearance of length at the rear.

I just measured up the hood and decklid on my Saratoga. The hood is 60 inches from the windshield to the front edge. The deck lid is only 48 inches from the back window to the outer edge of the lid. So I re-iterate, the fins give it the illusion / appearance of length at the rear.

1:43 scale (approx. Lionel O Scale).  $277.35 delivered

You would think I would be the perfect target customer, but I can't justify it!

For that price, I don't like the '57 hood badge on the front or the Adventurer interior!  I bet I know what car they modeled it on.

This what I am planning: I present the following (with the attached images).

Bottomline: I hope to create a reasonable facsimile (at 1/25th scale) of my 1956 Dodge D500 (hemi-engined) Custom Royal 4 dr sedan, complete with detailed under carriage, engine bay and interior.

To accomplish this I have purchased the following as the sources of the components for this one-off model:

1. An Aluminum Model Toy (AMT) 1/25 Promo (give way) of a 1956 Dodge 4dr Hardtop. There are many of these out there on eBay. Almost all of them (including the one I bought),
have roofs and rear fenders that have sagged over the years, perhaps due to heat.

I have seen one or two examples that aren't as sagged but the sellers of those ones know what they have ( a good one) and the pricing is stupid. The one I bought has known problems
(cracked rear fender and a missing hub cap) so it was relatively cheap. It was moulded in a light blue plastic that is similar to my car so that was attractive.
That would mean that, in theory, I would not have to paint a big section of the model, especially the parts with the Custom Royal logo (on the sides) and various hood and trunk badges.

*BUT* the rear fenders on the one I bought have sagged, which looks stupid. I would like to correct that (somehow). So if you have expertise, I am open to suggestions.
I think I can glue the crack in the left rear fender but that doesn't cure the sag.

The AMT promo model was made for kits so the chassis is metal and has a friction (flywheel) motor so I will NOT be using that. On the upside the front and rear grills and
bumpers are metal (chromed) and aren't that terrible.

2. A MCW (Model Car World) Finishes 1956 Dodge 1/25 scale resin model of a Coronet D500 2dr sedan. MCW makes these on-order and they are currently about 3 months behind filling their orders
so when I found one on eBay that had been started but not finished, I jumped on it.

It came with an interior (unfinished) and a fake chassis that the previous owner over spray painted (too much paint- obscures the details).

It was the first thing I bought and I would have had to figure out how to make it into a 4 dr (filling the rear end of the 2 dr and carving out grooves to mark the 4 drs -
doable but fraught with potential for making mistakes.

Once I bought the AMT 4 dr model, the MCW model became a donor for the roof and A and C pillars, "glass" and the sedan B pillar. And maybe at least part of the
rear fenders. (To correct the AMT's sagged fenders). It also has tiny but accurate decals of the D500 badges for the hood and trunk.

The MCW chassis does fit under the AMT shell so I could have stopped there. BUT I didn't.

3. Some how, some way I bumped into a review of a Moebius Models 1956 Chrysler 300 1/25 scale model that is very detailed and has a great separate component chassis and
opening hood with a detailed 354 hemi. Once saw that, I had to have it to steal the chassis and engine bay. I checked out eBay and found several. But then I found one
local to me at Burnaby Hobbies and bought it and a couple of types of glue. (No paint - yet)

One Moebius 300 review:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dp_bvW4favU

Another:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XngjRqw9AGo

The 56 Chryslers had a 126 inch wheel base whereas the 56 Dodges had a 120 inch wheel base so will have to cut out 6/25 of an inch (0.24") of the chassis, floor pan and drive shaft.
The Chryslers were wider than the Dodges as well so a small amount of the rear wheel tubs will have to be trimmed away to allow the Moebius floor pan to fit under the AMT body.
(I have done a trial fit and the floor pan fits not bad already - except for the rear wheel tubs).

The Chrysler 300's 354 cu in hemi had a block length of 21.78" vs. 20.844" for the Dodge D500's 315 cu in hemi so 0.936/25 = 0.037" actual difference, so I won't
do anything with that except sand off the "Chrysler FirePower" embossed on the valve covers and paint the covers red and black like the 56 Dodge D500s.
The engine will be silver otherwise. Not sure what to do with the Chrysler 300 dual 4 bbls vs my D500 with a single 4 bbl (there was a D500-1 with dual 4 bbls
but they were pretty much race only).

So the main areas that I need your help with are the sagging rear fenders. Suggestions welcomed.

See attached photos that go with the above text.

The latest update on my model of my 60 Saratoga - I added a form of the body side trim on the model which is actually a New Yorker.

I also changed the chassis on it. The default chassis that came with the model, in the box was a 1959 full frame chassis, and the rear wheels sat too far back....

I found a chassis on Ebay from a 1960 DeSoto Jo-Han model and installed it on the car - the rear wheels now sit in the correct position in the fender opening.
The model was labelled a New Yorker, but actually is the same body as the 60 DeSoto model with alterations, on a 122 inch wheelbase, while in reality, the
60 New Yorker was on a 126 inch wheelbase. The default full frame chassis that came with the "New Yorker" model was exactly the same chassis that is on
my 1959 New Yorker Jo-Han model, which fits that car perfectly. It's strange that the `960 New Yorker model came with the wrong chassis, when the
1960 DeSoto model chassis would have been the correct one. The kit had never been opened before I bought it.
