Location: Southern Sweden - Sturkö island | Hi d500neil, I live in southern Sweden on a small island called Sturkö. Yes the old gal has a really nice figure still after all those years. Just finished the job of changing the floor carpets and there is not even a hole in the floor pans - some surface rust was found but I only had to brush it off and paint the floor. It was a Florida car from the beginning, so the crome was not so good (bumpers recromed) with a lot of pittings and webbings. I have changed some and will evetualluy recrome some parts. |

Location: Southern Sweden - Sturkö island | Thanks TailFinGary, the Toga has the "delux" side trim, front fender ornaments and I have also bought the correct 3post passenger fender mirror. On the inside, she will get the 6way power seat, which I have bought and restored and the Mirrormatic will most probably also be bought and installed. She has now the rear speaker trims and mesh, which I got from E-bay and the rear defroster will also be mounted. Then I wish to get the power windows as well, but you know that all options cost some money and time. My Toga had the loop curl as original, and so has most of the Chryslers from 59-60 that I've seen (before restauration) - my bet is that the loop curl was original - I don't know when the cut pile entered on the marked. |

In fact, its long away from Vasteras (in our small country, that is) the island is called Sturkö and there are only about 1700 habitants year around + tourists in the summer. |

She shook and shuddered a little due to vaporized gasoline in the carburetor - then she caught and started to hum the fantastic gurgle of a V 8! After a long winter sleep, she woke up and came to life again.
The rear seat is now back in place and hopefully within short also the front seat will be in place

these are GREAT cars. today i took my girls original 150K (drivetrain never rebuild) mile 61 desoto coupe out of winter storage for a 60 mile test drive on the autobahn it runs so smooth 30 or 130 mph it drives and handles perfect. these are the greatest cars ever build!

Sometimes I'll get in the car, just sitting there with the domelight or the instrument lights on, a Rock N' Roll tune oozing out of the speakers - and start to drift away. We call this "dry drivin'" here, but whatever you call it, I'm almost sure that you've done it to.

Here in Sweden we have to inspect only every 2 years - so now it's only to cruise away.
The brakes had a perfect even pull and the front wheel suspension had no freeplay or any other defects! I just made an overall check, greased up the all the joints and performed some maintenance.

Is it original to the car ? - it looks like the 1959 version, as the 1960 and later version has an adjustment wheel rather than the sliding switch. I have been trying to scoop one of these at a reasonable price for 2 years !!

Location: Southern Sweden - Sturkö island | How true Ian, that is a 59 mirror that comes from a Plymouth Fury. I was lucky enough to find it at a very reasonable price ($350) in SWEDEN with a BRAND NEW mirror glass mounted. The mirror glass comes from a Volvo P 1800 and is cut down to the correct size (just a tiny bit missing in both the lower corners, since that mirror is not sufficiant in size) No my Saratoga did not have the Mirrormatic originally mounted. That is a real cool option (connect to the H terminal on the lightswitch). The only reasonable prices you'll find maybe with a bad spotted webbed mirror glass, but go ahead and buy them anyway - find a bigger mirror and have a glassworker cut it to size and polish away the silvercoat for the photocell. I'll keep an eye open for you and send yo a PM if I see one. |

I bought it in the late 1970s for $100.00 and had the mirror re-silvered. The mirror needed nothing else, and continues to work today on that car for the present owner. |

| That is really cool. Where's you find those options? It's hard to find them in the US. I have made a deal to buy a 60 NewYorker with a 413, power windows, fender ornaments, wheel well moldings and rockermouldings. It also has the remote control mirror and I am not sure which am radio it has. The guy is letting me make payments so I am not real excited about the car yet. But I will be.. A very interesting fact about the seller is that he went highschool with my late father.. I just call that a rediculious coincidence..

Location: Finland | Quite impressive list Sven... `Cos you now have swivel seats ongoing I´ll be visiting Sturkö soon and I won`t leave before we have a deal of your 6-way power seat There is swivel seats for sale in eBay but imo too expensive as being total project. I´ve been collecting small items to my Soto and latest score is "map light". I didn`t won the "dash clock" even that I bid sh*t load of money for it. I assume that someone needed it more than I did. With the money saved I went for the tool store and bought "planishing hammer" + some other metal shaping goodies... This winter I can atleast try to learn how to use real tools. Might be confusing `cos I´m so used to my old reliable "screw wise + hammer tehnique" -jupe

So you have taken the Saratoga upholstery and done it in the pattern of the New Yorker. The New Yorker upholstery pattern looks more like a bucket seat and looks more comfortable to sit on.
It looks very good that way. ( for those who don't know - see my Saratoga version below ) .
The New Yorker is the terra-cotta color interior at bottom.

Location: Southern Sweden - Sturkö island | Yes Ian, basically the idea is from the NY style, but my fabric has a more conical form and the piping is pulled in deep in the seats and less deep in the backrests. Further, the backrests has been slightly modified - you may notice that they're not so bulky anymore. The bucket form makes the seats more comfortable and keeps you "in place". There is however much work that remains, with adjusting of the height and improvement of the swivel parts. The swivel seats were an outstanding cool gadget when they where released in '59, but the quality of the parts leaves much to wish for. Even more, the automatic swivel seats that made a one year only - '60 had poor quality in the actuating parts in the doors. The $121 paid for the option must be considered a bad investment, since the major part of the automatic swivel seats soon became manual - they just broke down too much. I have been thinking to try to get the missing parts for the automatic function and to improve them - had Chrysler done that from the beginning, we might have seen that option for many years. A trivia about the swivel seats is that they where created as an idea of how to ease into the low cars in the later FL era.
I really love the special options and gadgets - it's a drug for me. |

For me, this "disturbes" the clean sweeping lines of the fins for the '60 Chryslers. Yet another one is the fender skirts, which I don't think fits a '60 at all. Those are my peronally opionions about two of the options. |

Mine are the automatic type, but cables are broken. At this point I'm not sure if I want to replace the cables, or just disconnect the springs because without the cables attached, the return springs cause the seats to swing back inwards and they don't swing out very easily with the springs attached. |

Location: Southern Sweden - Sturkö island | Yes indeed they where Ian. The rear door child safety locks are advertised in the MoPar Accessories 1960. The lock wher kind of OK - the children could not open the rear door, neither could you from the outside in case of an accident!!!!! You had to reach in, put one of the keys in the slot of the lock and pull back the locking pin, then lift up the locking lever - not a good thing if the car was on fire. I collect options, so I mounted them anyway.

You got a wonderful 60 Saratoga... When I compare it to my 56 NY your is uncountable steps in advance. You could drive your car while mine's still stalled at the mechanic (did not do anything). At your pics I see how nice re-chromed fenders are looking. The interior looks astonishing! Congratulation to your car.
Happy motoring

Oh, the second photo comes from a friend who has not mounted his ash receiver yet. The ting is that I had a cardboard sheet under the fabric and could not feel where the frame for the ash receiver was in the backrest. So that photo is for to help others with the same problem.

Location: SWITZERLAND | wizard - 2010-05-14 5:51 PM So, finally today JoseFin got her new seats mounted. Again and again I look in this thread admiring this beautiful car, fully loaded with affections of his owner - Sven. At the first glance and for outsiders, this car looks as a 2-Door, due to its engineous design. The swivel seats operation I found a little bit "restrichted" because of the smaller door opening of a 4-door car, as already stated. Thinking about, it should be easy possible, to get its full rotation as on a 2-door, in modifying its pivot to a "floating" pivot the way, that turning the seat out, it moves simultaneously up to 5cm towards front (not the seat frame with the 6-way adjuster), just never touching the cars body. This is called a guided rotation. Then. some brackets, some weldings - that's it! Every solution starts with an idea. This is another one for Sven. - SERGE -

That's one option I dont have Ian - I have some of the parts and I buy things when I stumble over them. The AC means that the dash has to be completely demounted so I dwell on it |

Absolutely not Ian - the Safe-T-Matic is very analog and purely mechanical. The actuators moves only by the inside toggle switch. You open the drivers door with the key and go inside - then you toggle the switch and open the other three doors (actually all 4 actuators moves, but the drivers door is already locked up).
Then if you wish, you toggle the switch for to lock all doors once all passengers are inside.

I'm sure I read it in some old Chrysler literature some time over the past year. Being vacuum actuated you'd think it would be an easy thing to make work when the car starts running and increasing vacuum. I just went through all my literature but I can't find anything. Maybe I was dreaming.....but I'm sure......? If I ever find it I'll be sure to share it.

Well, actually, I don't know yet - this is what I did;
Bought a spare wiper motor and a spare variable wiper switch.
Connected the spare variable wiper switch directly to the original motor - same problem
Connected the mounted variable wiper switch to the spare motor - worked well and parked
Connected the spare variable wiper switch to the spare motor - worked well and parked.
Changed the wiper motor and kept the mounted variable wiper switch - works and park.
The problem started when the car was used in rain - seems like moist or water got into the motor? Thereafter the wiper did not park. Put the car in the garage, a couple of days after, the wiper parked nicely again. Worked in this way for a year, then "pof" never parked again.
When I get some time, I'll open up the original motor for to investigate the problem, repair it and keep the motor as spare. |

I had that exact same issue with my ex-1960 Polara when I was driving it as a daily driver back in the 1970s When the car got wet, wipers would not park. When it all dried out, they would park. Now Ron, who owns the car, has had the same issue lately when the car got wet. Dried out, working again. Let us know if and when you find the exact issue. |

Location: So. Cal | What is this optional alternator mounting bracket? Are you referring to the bottom mount? What does it look like? I didn't know you could purchase an alternator for these. I thought they were only used on the Valiant.
My '60 NY has most of these options except for the auto pilot, record player & beamchanger. But to me, it just means more work to go through them all to make them function again. |

Location: Southern Sweden - Sturkö island | The original optional alternator bracket was used for the few cars that was equipped with the new alternator (standard on Valiant).
It seems that MoPar introduced the alternators on the low price Valiants for to test them, but the alternator was available as an option for the bigger cars.
For me, it is a challenge and very interesting to repair and make all these options to work as in the old days.
Below, please see photos of the oem bracket and the homemade connection support between te original generator reinforcement brackets and the alternator bracket. This way there will be most probably never be any problems with the installation.

Location: Southern Sweden - Sturkö island | I always wondered why the glove compartment lid never opened fully, thus making the cup holder impressions useless, or at a high risk of tipping the coffee into the glove compartment.
Finally, Ian Smale told me that the early production '60 Chryslers actually had a different stopper that allowed full opening of the lid.
The full opening was most probably changed due to the risk of hitting the knees on the lid if the seat was adjusted forward for a short driver.
Kindly, Ian sent me a template, long time ago, thanks' a lot!
I had the template digitlized and had a friend to water-cut out some stoppers.
It wasnt easy to bend the stopper profile properly, so I cut and welded instead.
Now I'll test the new stopper for awhile and see if I like it - most important has been to understand the original function.
You might notice a black ledge on the botton of the glove compartment - that serves for that the things in the glove compartment stays in place even if the lid is open during acceleration.
First two photos is from Ian;
The following photos is from my test mount and they show the big difference;

Location: Southern Sweden - Sturkö island | The the plan from the beginning was to have double positions Serge, but there's very limited space, perhaps there's space for double material thickness, but no more.
A spring plunger or a blade spring might be possible to add, but that will have to wait until there's a reason to remove the glove compartment for other services.
Thanks' for the heads-up!

Location: Ramona, CA | I always wondered why the glove box door didn't open flat. Both of my 1960 Chryslers are from May production. I have an early dash in the garage, I'll have to check it out.
As for the alternator bracket, are there A/C and non-A/C versions? The generator brackets are different. My '60 Imperial is a late production and came with an alternator, but it doesn't use this bracket setup. It uses what 1961 Chryslers had.
I've not seen any bulletins covering retrotitting the alternator to generator cars.

Location: Southern Sweden - Sturkö island | I can only assume that there must have been versions for A/C and non-A/C Nick. The alternator was an option, at least for the early production cars.
I also assume that the alternators was factory installed, not dealer mounted.
As for the glove box door, my Saratoga was made in february, so the full opening must have been type late 59 |
