Ray's progress, John & M'Lisa's budget restoration, Robert's restoration of the Contreras Dodge, and many others have inspired me in one of my old and dear projects! I have never posted a picture of this car before now. I bought the car on May 27, 1996 after I saw it advertised in the Rocky Mountain News. Believe it or not, there was actually a time when you could find a car like this in the local newspaper. It seems like the internet has changed everything! On January 11, 1958, Mr. Andy Martischang, a salesman at the James Motor Company at 1278 Lincoln Street in Denver, sold this car brand new to Mr. Harry P. Gammel and Mrs. Freda F. Gammel of 6340 N. Downing Street for the sum of $4,619.71 (includes 2% tax and $127.68 interest and filing fee). Mr. Gammel was an employee of the Coors Brewery in Golden Colorado and he used to drive the car to work every day. The Gammel's passed it on to their children. I have talked to their son, Charles A. Gammel who still lives in Arvada. The Gammel children used to race the car at the dirt track in Castle Rock. I wonder if that was the old Continental Race Way? At any rate, it eventually left the Gammel family and wound up in the possession of Mr. Alan Flemming, a Denver police officer who buys cars and sells them for a quick profit. I bought the car from Mr. Flemming lo these many years ago. I took the car apart, restored the frame, had the body repaired and painted, married my wife, had two beautiful children, and bought about ten other cars to tinker around with. Now it is time to get her runnin' as Ray says. The first week of December, this goes off to MoPower Masters to become a running, driving car again. I traded Wilbur Huyett's race car for the service...

Very nice Mike,

I too remember when you could find cars in the local papers and on craigslist. No deals anymore. I guess the good side of that is that with a little paint and powder my 60 dart Phoenix 4 door will bring a pretty penny. At least it has lots of chrome:-)) It is very complete and the bumpers are perfect.

Thanks guys. I appreciate the bowling puns too - I think I may have "spared" this, but I haven't bowled a turkey yet! When I was taking the photos, I didn't even think about those pins on the floor. When I downloaded the pictures - I just sighed and said "those would have been so easy to pick up and move out of the way!" Oh, well. I don't know why parts of the pictures are in focus and other parts are blurry.

As I recall, I paid the princely sum of $1,600 for this car back in 1996. I actually drove it home and drove it around for awhile. A mere drop in the bucket compared to what I have poured in to this point! It will be good to see some progress along the lines of what Ray has achieved on this car. My understanding is that I will be able to drive it back from the shop - twelve years since the last time I was behind the wheel!

Nice car! And you know the history. I'm looking forwards to seeing it on the road.

You are very good at finding out the history of your cars. How do you do it?

Also, have you posted pictures of your Coronet convertible?

Thanks, guys:

Stanford - the local cars have been much easier to find bits of history. I have had pretty good luck with the Gammel Dodge, the Easton DeSoto, and the Huyett Dodge. Interestingly, I know very little about my first car - my pride and joy - the gold and eggshell Royal Lancer sedan. I looked into the history of the navy and silver Coronet that I bought from Jim Helm and sold to Kent Johanson, but I knew even less about it. For some reason, I didn't find out much about the Plymouth. I think there is an interesting story behind the Coronet convertible too, but that could be very difficult to uncover. Are you free for a beer and a burger on the 13th? I think Ray and Robert and I are going out.

Ray - The future of this car should be kind of interesting...I have to sell it to pay off the DeSoto, so I don't know if I am going to get much of a chance to drive it or what will happen. Tony Richards has told me that several people are interested in it already. It would be very nice to sell it in the Denver area. I would very much like to see this car running around town. It is an unusual car with some unusual options. In all my searching for '58 Dodges, it seems that I have found lots of Coronets and many Custom Royals, but the Royals are not as common. Of course, the best features of this car are the D-500 engine and the coupe body style.

Hi, Roger:

Black and white. I haven't seen it myself. In 12 years of ownership, I have never uncovered the original seats! I do not know what condition thery are in. You can see the original heat sealed vinyl below the seat covers, but I don't know about the original fabric. I suppose the driver's seat is shot, but I do not know for certain...

I visited More Power Masters today. Gerad is nearly ready...it should be running and driving by late next week!!! I am pumped up about this one. Once it gets back to my house, I need to install the windows and the headliner and then get the interior done. Once completed, this car is ready to roll again!

As mentioned in another thread, I ran into Bob at the Richatd's place. He is a happy camper!

The Richards family delivered the "Black Beauty" today. It is very exciting to have the car running and driving again. Gerad did a great job with the wiring, dash, and engine detail. Tony put a hi-po cam in the stock 361 and thinks this car can give 383 RoadRunners a run for their money! It sounds pretty beefy when it is at idle! They said it will easily light up the tires.

It has a very aggressive rake, but the Richards said they could adjust that back down if I wanted. They said once the interior is installed, I could bring it back for a tune up and adjust the stance. For right now, I kind of like it!

The spark plug wires are the expensive set on eBay right now. They are very nice and correct-looking. I asked Gerad about the original wire guides and he said that this routing would help protect the wires better from the heat of the exhaust manifold.

Weird that it would have a perpidicular "682' stamping over the factory stamping. Possibly an rebuild code if it was in someones shop or dealership for a rebuild? How about a rebuild on June 8th, 1962...Just a wild guess....

Look at how different the "6" in the 360 is from the "6" in the 682! Very interesting, indeed! Like John says, it does seem that the 682 is over the factory stamp.

I guess your computer punch card just has the 7069?

Yes, the two engine numbers appear to be very close!

To add a wrinkle to this, in 1954 my parents' 1952 De Soto sucked a valve seat. The factory shipped a new engine without serial number, and the dealership stamped the original engine's serial number on the block. Thus, even with an engine replacement it still had matching numbers. It also means that a matching number car could have a dealer stamped serial number on it.

That is true Stanford, I can't recall what year the Federal Government mandated the Vin stamped on the block (for theft reasons) somewhere, I thought early 60's...Some states had this law in the 50's and others did not.

So if you lived in that state the delivering dealer would be required to stamp the block when new. If the car was from an out of state area that did not do this, then you were required to have this done if you registered the car in a "stamped block state" even if the car was used.

Replacement warranty blocks would have to be done this way too!

Here is one of the refurbished spinner wheelcovers. Last weekend, I spread out all my wheelcovers and assembled the best eight covers with the best eight spinners. I cleaned everything up with steel wool and then painted the centers semi-gloss black. Then I painted the helmets with Amica clear yellow. Since I am a nut, I painted the eye slits with black and painted the rope and drape with Amica clear orange - it gave the emblem a gold-and-copper look that I kind of like (but it is not how it looked from the factory). I had thought about making the fish-scale armour copper too - but thought that might be too much!

Fantastic job, well done, Mike.

I wish I could see it in reality.

Really cool with the small details.

55BlueHeron - 2011-03-25 4:34 PM To add a wrinkle to this, in 1954 my parents' 1952 De Soto sucked a valve seat. The factory shipped a new engine without serial number, and the dealership stamped the original engine's serial number on the block. Thus, even with an engine replacement it still had matching numbers. It also means that a matching number car could have a dealer stamped serial number on it.

This is interesting. but it`s not explain the strange 682, My engine is change somehow, but what??

Nice Pics of the Gammel Dodge. Looks even better in person. Ands sounds even better!

And in the last picture you can see the 58 Dodge Convertible is in fact, at Mike's house, and it shows I did in fact deliver the vehicle to him and not keep it for myself! Tempting I know.....LOL

Black makes that car look bad ass. What more needs to be done to it?

There are a few things: I need to put in all the side windows and vent windows. I need to have the interior put in with the original headliner. I need to take the car back to Wheels of Time and have them fix a few areas where the paint lifted and a small rust spot on the passenger rear wheel well. Other than those items, I think the car is ready to go!

Hi, Bengt:

I have not uncovered the seats yet, but there are a few surprises. The Gammel Dodge was built very early in the production run and it appears to have received the 1957 "dog-bone" black fabric! I should have some pictures up in a few weeks.

It sounds strange Mike.

I have the same TRIM code 173 as you have, and my car's birthday OCT 2 "57,
so now you make me curious, and this picture shows what under the hot rod interior in my car. It looks like 1958 to me, or?? SMS product numberr: 58-81024

Hi, Bengt -

So both our cars were built days apart (yours first) - both are Royals, both D500s, both from the Hammatramck plant, both trim codes 173. We should have the exact same interior! I need to take some pictures of mine and post.

It looks like there are some horizontal marks on yours (maybe from the seat covers)? So this is the forward portion of the rear seat butt-rest. I do not recognize the fabric at all from my '58 fabric sample book - but I will check again. Just looking at the picture, the fabric looks original - a mystery indeed!

Bengt, yours is the correct, original, 1958 material. It is one of the few fabric samples missing from my sample sheet! I have the light blue version. That makes me even more puzzled...why would the Gammel Dodge (built 12 days after yours) get the 1957 fabric??? Did they run out?

I sold the Gammel Dodge yesterday to Marianne and Tom Amberg of Arvada.

I had not worked on it in quite a while and it was time for it to go. I was reluctant to sell it, but I think Tom and Marianne will rev up the restoration and get it done right. I can give them all the parts necessary to complete the restoration and free up space to focus on the convertible. They are a really nice couple and I hope they will stay in touch.

I never even uncovered the original seats!

Gerad Richard sent me some images of two of my very favorite cars together again.  He is working on the windows of the Gammel Dodge for Marianne.  Great to see these cars again!

Also, Gerad uncovered the seats!  I have long waited to see what is underneath the covers!  I was very surprised to see the black vinyl!  I had thought those sections would be black fabric and I even thought that they were a black 1957 Dodge fabric.
