eBay is one place, though bidding gets crazy at this time of year.

Stay away from the white bodied 1960s Penetray wheels. Not durable and very noisy motors. New wheels are made and are available in various catalogs as well as eBay, often cheaper than good vintage examples. Best old wheels? Evergleam, older Penetrays, Afco, Sylvania, G.E., Spartus are examples.

Next time I pull out the mold rubber I will have to play with the idea? |

Location: Las Vegas, Nevada | I have a six foot Peco tree with pom-pom ends. But we have a seven foot natural tree as our "main" tree, so I haven't put it up in years. I'd like a six or seven foot Evergleam pom-pom tree, but those are the "Imperials" of the aluminum Christmas tree genre and are always super expensive.
They are repopping the "nuclear" style ornaments, star shaped ornaments, etc. Forward Look emblems would fit right in!

Location: Poznan, Poland, Europe | Thanks for info on those lamps with color disks. I'm obsessed with such lamp for years. Altough not for it's X-mas background but it's Broadway bigger cousin for adding colors on stage. It's good to know they made something what would run the same way at your home. |

Location: Las Vegas, Nevada | Here's an AFCO outdoor projector wheel. They were a bit sturdier than the house units, were moisture-proof and could be staked in the ground. They also rotated at 2 RPM instead of the more common 4 RPM.
If I were to put this outside today, it would be "boosted" or vandalized and if not, the intense Southern Nevada sun would fade the gels within a couple weeks.
In Milwaukee, many houses sported a limestone veneer known locally as "Lannon Stone." In fact, the lake in Menomonee Park, just outside Menomonee Falls, was once a quarry which produced this attractive building material.
I remember people who would stake these projectors in front of their Lannon Stone houses. The entire front of the house would "change colors." It was pretty awesome, especially if you were a small child.

Location: Utah | This reminds me of a funny story. A buddy of mine and his wife just spent $150 + on one of these trees. Their neighbor came over, offered a few compliments, and said "don't worry, next year you'll be able to afford a real tree".

Location: Curwensville, PA | Here is our 6ft REVLIS Starlite Aluminum tree my wife and I set up every year. REVLIS (Silver Spelled Backwards) Starlite was also known as the "Imperial" of Aluminum Christmas Trees of the 1950's and were known for their High Quality, and Thick tree appearance. We place Multi-Colored lights on the tree with a white cord instead of the standard color wheel. These trees on the Large Auction site go for insane prices, but I was lucky and bought mine many years ago at a large antique store in my hometown. We have all vintage ornaments on the tree as well. Makes for a great 1950's feeling Christmas.

| Kenny, you are the first person to talk about the AFCO outdoor projector! I dug ours out of my mother's attic, but fear I need a new motor. Mine spins for about ten minutes and gets stuck. Do you have any ideas on where to get a replacement motor or what I need? I always loved this projector my mom focus on a silver door cover at Christmas...hate to give up on it. Thanks, Marta Jo |

You can try running the motor without the wheel installed for a while and see if it loosens up. Or get some of that spray can electrical component cleaner. The motor is held to the face plate by two small rivets. If the motor needs to be replaced, you could adapt a 2 RPM disco ball motor from one of these sources:

Here's a small industrial motor source:
http://www.multiproducts.com/gearmotors.htm
Here's a 12-24 VDC motor, which would require a small power converter:
http://www.servocity.com/html/2_rpm_gear_motor.html
Most of these motors will need to be mounted to a face plate to mount inside the AFCO housing. Plus you would have to modify the output shaft to accept the wheel's shaft.
Small motors like that can be rebuilt, but I am not sure what it would cost to have one done.
I hope this helps.

| Dear Kenny J,
I cannot thank you enough for your research re motors! I didn't expect such a thoughtful reply. I will try running without the color wheel again, but so far that has not worked, even with application of SAE 20 motor oil. Next step is to open the cover on the motor and take a closer look. Will consider either more oil or a replacement motor.
My mother removed the yellow panel years ago, so I only have three color panels. Yours looks to be in perfect condition! I also wanted to compliment you on your Christmas decorations. Seattle is a bit far to drive by, but the pictures are lovely. Thanks again! Marta Jo |

You can probably make a new gel. Take the wheel to an art supply store and see if they can get a sheet of yellow gel in the proper thickness. Then cut it to match the others and mount it.
The wheel pictured isn't perfect. A previous owner cut a slot in the center and I have to use a washer to hold it centered. There is a guy in Tennessee I know who has a perfect one, but he won't sell it.
So you're in Seattle? Any city with electric buses is cool with me!
