I talked to Charles Gammel today and he sent me this photograph of his dad and mom's car back when it was brand new. He said this photo was probably from 1958. That's Charles little brother standing in front of the car. The young man in the passenger seat might be Charles, the second owner of the car.

Charles had all sorts of great information. His parents bought the car from the dealership. He said they bought a 1962 Chrysler and then a Plymouth after that. Sometime before he went to Viet Nam, he bought the car from his parents. He left for duty and the car was waiting for him when he returned. Later, he sold the car to a friend of his named Glen Lewis. Together, we are going to try to figure out if anyone else owned it between Mr. Lewis and Mr. Flemming, whom I bought it from in 1996.

It turns out that Harry Gammel, Charle's dad, owned a service station. Charles worked for the Coors ceramics division. Charles is a fellow who likes speed. He used to race the car at the Continental race track in Castle Rock - same place that Wilbur Huyett raced. Charles still likes to go fast and currently drives a Corvette! He also included a picture of Harry at the service station.

Wow, that is really neat Mike! I have the contact info for the original owner of my car but we have been unable to connect.

Good stuff!

Wow! If the original owner of your car is still alive - that's a rare thing. Is he/she in Colorado? I have been incredibly lucky with the Gammel Dodge. The early history was all complete and with the car. At least one of the Gammel sons is very easy to contact. To top it all off, he has digital photos ready to go! Amazing.

Fantastic story of this car, Mike.

you never got any photos from Gammel?

it has black painted hubcaps, is it something Mr Gammel did?

Thanks, Bengt! The spinner wheel covers were different from 1957 to 1958. The 1957 wheel covers were a polished stainless steel cover. The 1958 spinners were still polished stainless steel, but they had a black painted center. These are the only two photos that Charles sent to me.
