Location: Montreal, Canada | All right,
Because Adriana inspired me big time with her "Sub Club" and I that needed a reason to ask FL member to show their Sub to us,
here it is the official "Sub Club".
Now it is time to show off your wagon, restored or not. Tell us what it needs, cool souvenirs, family trips, '50's shopping adventure and more.
Here is mine,
1959 Dodge Custom Sierra.
Bought her in 1997, I toured the US and Eastern Canada with the band gear in the back. Made several trips with the kids. My last trip was with my wife
in Ohio to buy part from Murray B. Park and Vintage Auto Parts (both very nice guys). Two weeks later, the car died in my garage. Both engine and tranny needs full rebuilt now as well as the body. One day I will resurrect her to her former glory.
Now your turn.

Once I get mine, I think I'll start up a couple factions of my own:
"The Godfather FL Club" for all the 1st generation FL's (1955-1956 - the Coronado qualifies)
"The Little Orphan FL Club" for all the single year, relatively quirky FL designs (1959 - my future Fury/Sport Fury hardtop qualifies)
I'll be watching out for entries..... |

Your modesty knows no bounds, sir - having had two of my own in years gone by, I can attest to what an unreal headache it is organizing a big band. Be it full time or seasonal, I had to juggle up to 18 schedules just to get my guys in for rehearsals every time, let alone gigs.
The music sure pays off, though. |

Did have an all-girl sax section at one point, though (2 alto, 3 tenor, 1 baritone - sometimes the 3rd tenor dropped down to baritone). |

catman, im glad that you liked my 'sub club' idea and i have wanted to start a thread like this for a while but though that people might be getting annoyed with me for all my jabbering and rambling...
but i shall put my two cents in now...
my suburban is oscar i am currently looking for the following parts... top/ bottom ball joints and top wishbone bushes and as always headlight rings... im sure theres is more but thats all that i can remember right now... oscar is at the body shop at the moment and should be finished any day now and then he shall go to the paint shop... i am always searching for 1961 plymouth paraphernalia that i dont have... i hope to one day own a '61 plymouth suburban in every available colour (if that is still possible, there is some colours ive never seen one in)
to distract myself from the every growing mountain of assignments i have to complete i made a quick bumper sticker for our make believe club catman... how funny...

Adriana,
Love your bumper stiker. OK maybe I would go with different color.
You are right about "not enough writing" this why I started this tread: to let members write about their sub. I love to read a good stories.
I can't wait to see your sub with a fresh coat of paint. Keep us posted.
Now your turn sub owners, tell us more about your car. Post a picture so I can make some kind of registry: the "FL Sub Club owners".

Location: DFW, TX | Here's my '57 Suburban. Someone on the HAMB said they knew where a couple of old cars were sitting in Florida, including a 1959 Suburban. No one else seemed to realize that Suburbans were Mopars, so I asked him for the contact information. The car's owner told me it was actually a '58 and had a little rust but was overall pretty solid. He had bought it 15 years earlier to chop up into an Americana art project but never got around to it. When he sent me pictures, it was obviously really rough, and obviously a '57! However it was dirt cheap and a 2dr wagon, so I went ahead and got it. My dad thought I was crazy, I think some of you know he does high-end restoration work. I slowly accumulated some parts for it over 3yrs and a couple of moves, but about this time last year I got serious about putting it on the road. It's just a beater but it has been an absolute blast to drive around. It's been extremely reliable too. The first two problems I've had with it were both this month, the roll pin sheared in the 289 Ford's distributor and the fuel pump died. I've been considering selling it to make more room, but it sure is fun to bomb around in it.

I've since put tubes in the tires and that solved the problem. The bias plys are really pretty and I like them, but they wear fast on a heavy car and I wanted a slightly different look for the car.
I put a set of BFGs radial whitewalls on my chrome reverse last week and have been driving it around like this since, it drives INFINTELY better with the radial tires! It's like a whole new car. I may put these on the wire wheels though, I do like the spokes.

Location: League City, TX | The paint looks good in the pics, but its not fresh. It's pretty faded in places, mainly on the roof and hood. All in all its very straight, with some rust in the rear quarters. It needs floor pans, the previous owner cut out the floor pans and screwed in some aluminum with sheet metal screws. So its like the floors are made of cookie pans right now. It already had a 440, a later model 727, and later rear axle when I bought it. Plans are to make it into a mild custom. Noting drastic, have it sit a little lower, maybe remove some of the trim and badges, and a nice paint job.
The story on the car is a long one. I've owned it for about 6 years now, which makes it the vehicle I've owned longest out of all my current vehicles. I had planed to start working on it right away, but my daily driver F150 was rear ended and totaled out shortly after I bought the Suburban. I bought the truck back from insurance, bought a Bronco for my new daily. Then found a 65 F100 to put the motor and transmission out of the wrecked truck in. Thinking it would be a quicker project I started working on the F100 first. Now that it is almost finished I'll finally get started on the Plymouth. |

Silvertowns. The rears are 235/70-15s with a 2.75" whitewall, the fronts are 215/65-15s sold with a 2.5" whitewall but they're actually 2.25". I'm happy with the tire sizes, wish the whitewalls weren't 1/2" different though.

I've suggested to Adrianna, and suggest to any others, out there, with the flat head-6, that they should consider
hopping/dressing-up their engines for more performance and visual attraction.
Shaving the head, larger valves, porting/polishing, intake and exhaust manifolds and multiple carbs are all doable.
Back in the 30's, the Chrysler high-performance cylinder head was the (painted-) "Red Head"; I'd probably paint my car's head red
(or maybe chrome it) and keep the engine in Chrysler-silver.

I bouught my 'Burb from 1958 Paul of Omaha last labor day. On the way home (driving her) we overheated. Turns out there was a cracked head and block.
I was nosing around this site and 1957Plymouth turned me on to Vintage Power Wagons here in Iowa. Turns out they are 100 miles South of me so I went and picked up a complete engine, head to pan.
I found a header/dual carb manifold on Ebay and got a couple late carbs for her. Shaved the head to raise compression a bit and got an HEI ignition. Cleaned and detailed things and am about to put it in. I'm dying to drive her.

This is still Exner-styling, exact same model as the '61 Chrysler, only without the fins this year.
That's why I never get that 1961 year 'cutoff' when it comes to FWLK-cars. Probably invented by a Dodge or Plymouth-owner
'63 and newer is Engel, with different chassis-components and all.

Location: bishop, ca | Dorsey, A Dodge "Suburban" would only refer to the 2-door station wagon model, and it was equipped similar
to that of the Coronet models.
The higher-end Sierra ("Royal"-trimmed) and Custom Sierra "Custom Royal"-trimmed) wagons were both only
4-door models. Either could be bought having the rear "Spectator" seat, or not.
Calling a CSierra a 'Suburban', is kind of a put-down....kinda like referring to a chopper as "a scooter"....

***********************************
The "burbs" are a nuevo conceptodad of post-war housing, and while they became neighborhoods in their own right, they were more of an open space sprawling outside of the old established town kind of thing, rather than the traditional street grid and building lots type of development. They were the hallmark of post-war residential building, and they even spawned a unique new commercial style of building as well. The station wagon had never really been very popular until this development came along and the old marketing dept. pitched them as the ultimate cruiser for this new world they had created. And what better name ? The "Suburban", of course ! |

Location: bishop, ca | Brent got most of that info complete; the raison d'etre of the station wagons WAS the post-war family, and its needs/interests
in having a multi-use second car, for momma, and, of course, the fact that the family was now residing in the somewhat distant-
from-city "suburban developments".
The suburbs are really defined by their ranch-style single-floor architecture and custom designed curving streets, as a planned
single family development (located miles away from the city's commerce-center).
Until post-war, most families never had the need for a second car.
Our family grew up in the semi-suburbs of Toledo (designed in the 30's) featuring 2-story houses, but with each house being
singularly different in appearance from its neighboring houses, and with single car detached garages.
Getting to downtown was a matter of getting on a city bus, where all of the serious shopping was done.
This was all pre-mall, but, there were outside strip malls back then.
The malls really developed as an adjunct to the residential suburbs, but once they took hold, along with the advent
of the second family car, the old downtown commerce was pretty much doomed.
The term "burb" probably began, and/or became popular, sometime in the 70's/80's. It's still only somewhat regularly-seen
in publication, rather than in common speech usage.

That's not its OEM color scheme, is it?
The Deluxe scheme would have the roof painted in yellow, too, and the other scheme would have the roof and the fins (only)

P.S.- One of my '59 Plymouth wagons will be re-powered with a Desoto Hemi, a 1956 330. And it will remain a a three-on-the-tree. |

Location: bishop, ca | The only 2-door Dodge station wagons were the "Suburbans"; the Sierras and the Custom Sierra models were 4-door only
models, and, the Suburbans did not have quarter-side windows that rolled down; they swung-open, like the
68 Road Runner club coupes did.
The Dodge Suburbans were finished similarly to the Coronet series; the Sierras like the Royals, & the CSierras like the CRL's.
A Super D500 Suburban would be BEYOND Kool....like a V800 Plymmie in their 2-dr wagon....

Location: Moorhead MN | I just bought it a week ago from the person who owned it since 1998. He has a lot of paper work that I haven't went through yet.
The car was sold in southern Calif and supposedly was in New Mexico and made it to Minnesota where He bought it. I have a copy of a Minn title from 1997. It is powered by a 56 Chrysler 354 Hemi and the side pipes do work and that hemi makes wonderful sounds. It has a powerflyte and no power steering or brakes. The rear side windows slide open and the spare tire is in the back and not on the side as some were. The previous owner contacted chrysler for information and was unable to get any about whether 2 door suburbans were made in the Sierra series. I'll post some other pics soon. |

Location: DFW, TX | All 1956 Chryslers used the Powerflite transmission, so that sounds right. All two-door wagons had the sliding glass in the panel behind the doors.
All six-passenger wagons would have the spare tire under the lid of the trunk compartment. This includes all two-door wagons, and all four-door models without the rear facing Spectator seat. When a four-door wagon was ordered as a nine-passenger, it got the seat, and the space where the tire went on six-pass wagons was instead used for foot room. The spare tire went outside to the little panel behind the right rear wheel.
I want to find a Spectator seat for my two-door wagon! |

Location: bishop, ca | Fred, there were no 2-door Sierra wagons ever built.
You should buy the dedicated 1957 Dodge Station wagon/light truck brochure.
The Historical Society knows precious little about the Forwardlookers, but, at least, they ARE the keepers of the IBM build card
micro-film records! And, they can tell you what/where your car's selling dealership was, located.
How do you (dis-)connect the 'dumps'? Get out-and-under, like John Milner did, in American Grafitti ?

Location: bishop, ca | The outside-accessed spare tire was an available option, on the 6-passenger (4-door) wagons; I presume
that it was an option on the Suburban 2-doors, as well.
The Spectator seat was not available on the Suburbans (IIRC) , but, that WOULD make for an interesting customization
project, for someone---AND, if successfully done, would create a LOT of talk about whether that seat WAS OEM-available
and/or installed; kinda like seeing a Hemi in a 1958 Dodge, etcetcetc....urban mythology.

| My 58 Custom Sierra is a 6 passenger, with the outside mounted spare. This gives you the option of adding a 3d seat if you can scare up the parts.
As a kid the "way back" seat was a great place to hang out. As an adult, it's kinda scary back there!
That is a great looking wagon. I love the colors! The roof rack is another nice touch . . . wish I had one on mine.

Wow, I went through my 1957 station wagon brochure, and even the 1957
Ross Roy Data (propaganda) book, without finding specific information on
the availability of the outside-accessed spare tire.
Found that info, finally, in the 1958 wagon brochure.
The outside spare tire was available on the (six-passenger, only)
2-door Suburban wagons.
Here's a view from the 1957 wagon brochure identifying the three wagon
lines, too.

Location: Williams California | I had also been under the impression that the removeable skirt meant the car had the third seat, and wondered why, every once in awhile I'd get a car with the skirt, and no third seat.
Thanks for clearing that up Neil.

You guys are very lucky. I followed your honeymoon with M'lisa with a bit of nostalgie. It reminded me my last trip with "George" (my car's name) in Ohio with my wife. Almost 10 years ago!!!!!!! We mix vacation and parts chasing. At the time, I met with Murray B. Park at his place, nice guy and easy to deal with.
Anyway, keep on rollin'
