********************************

I have been out in "the pit" and ignoring all that periphery stuff like distant auction dates. So, ... it has finally arrived.

I guess this would explain the absence of el Prolificus del Vedder here !

$1500 for a restored porcelain faced neon sign is small change in that world. I have a few friends in that hobby / biz that tell me of gas station stuff going into six digits. Oddball names like "Chief" and "Polly", or even common stuff like the Atlantic Richfield eagle draw cubic bux.

Wish I was there with my own wheelbarrow of cash !

Yeah, been watching it myself. This is shocking to me, the prices that stuff is bringing.

57 Chrysler New Yorker Convertible 17 miles.. Sold $195,000

This fabulous Indian Turquoise and Seafoam Aqua Chrysler New Yorker convertible is the subject of one of those fascinating car stories we all love. A full 52 years after it was purchased by its original owner as a gift to his wife, it still has only 17 original miles on the odometer. The explanation for this unlikely happenstance: the woman simply decided that she didn’t like the car. It then sat unused in storage until 1993, when the '57 Heaven Museum purchased it and subsequently returned it to glorious original condition through a rotisserie restoration.

Highlights:

- Indian Turquoise and Seafoam Aqua with two-tone Turquoise interior
- 1,049 total production
- 392/325 HP Hemi engine
- Push button Torqueflite transmission
- Single four barrel carburetor
- Power steering and brakes
- Outside rearview mirrors
- Whitewall tires
- Tinted glass
- Dual exhaust
- Wire wheels were offered in 1956 and then discontinued. They could, however, still be bought through the dealer and installed on'57s.

57 DeSoto Firedome Convertible sold.. $125,000

The Firedome was the lowest-priced DeSoto convertibles offered in 1957. Priced at only $3,361, it was almost $1,000 cheaper than the top of the line model, but this car’s generous list of options shows just how nice the Firedome could be. Adding the high-torque 341/295 HP Firedome Hemi in front of the Torqueflite transmission made it the perfect highway cruiser, and the Firedome’s low production total of only 1,297 units make it a very rare Fifties classic. The Azure Blue and Lagoon Blue paint is perfectly trimmed with dual antennas and chrome outside mirrors, Whitewalls and dual exhaust.

Also left off the option list were outside mirrors and a heater, although the driver can raise or lower the top at the flick of a switch.

While minimally outfitted, this 1957 Belvedere convertible is still a beautiful example of Plymouth’s new design.

57 Dodge Sweptside Pickup sold $75,000

The happiest-looking truck of the Fifties, the Dodge Sweptside Pickup was positioned against the Chevrolet Cameo and other “citified” pickups of the era. Easily identified by its unusual headlight treatment, the Sweptside also featured finned quarter panels taken directly from the 2-door Dodge station wagon.

Made only in '57, '58 and '59, these pickups are quite rare. The "fins" are actually quarter panels from the 2-door station wagon bolted on the standard pickup box.

- 315/204 HP engine
- Torqueflite transmission

57 Plymouth Belvedere 2-Door Hardtop ( Miss Belv ) Sold $ 47,000

The new Plymouth Belvedere so impressed the good citizens of Tulsa, Oklahoma in 1957 that they included one in a concrete “time capsule” in June of that year to be disinterred for the Tulsa Bi-Centennial celebration in 2007. This fine-looking specimen was discovered in Iowa in the mid-Nineties and given a complete frame-up restoration. Finished in Desert Gold and White with a stunning White and Gold interior, it is exactly identical to the Tulsa “time capsule” car on the day it was interred.

Highlights:

- Desert Gold Poly and White with Gold and White interior
- 67,268 total production
- 301/215 HP engine

1957 Plymouth Belvedere Police Car ( 4dr 6 flathead ) Sold $12,000

Whether it was on the streets of the Big City or the roads outside Smallville, the police car was a regular protagonist in 1950s pop culture. A nostalgic charm has grown up around cops-and-robbers shows and movies of the era, and is well embodied in this Plymouth Belvedere four-door sedan patrol car. While its six cylinder flathead wouldn't chase down many bad guys, it certainly is imbued with that Highway Patrol ambience.

Highlights:

- Black and White with original Black and White interior
- 10,414 total production
- 230/132 HP engine
- Push button automatic transmission
- Carter one barrel carburetor
- Radio
- Back up lights

IMHO, the prices are low-to-mixed. Hardly a sign that the recession is over. Certainly not the prices that we saw mid-decade. And these are well-restored museum cars.

You gotta remember that there are lots of high rollers in attendance and bidding over the phone. Also this is an auction, where cars bring higher prices than is the norm. The only surprising auction was the CRL conv, which got 190K. Others, such as the Belvedere 2dr HT, the wagons, the Coronet and Belvedere converts were bargains.

Certainly they are well-restored, and I'd LOVE to own any of the cars, BUT again, with all the $$$ spent restoring them, I'd have thought they'd be more correct (should not be a 4-barrel carb on the DeSoto Firedome, no way the Firesweep came with a 392 hemi, the Adventurer convertible should NOT have a white top, etc.) NOT PUTTING DOWN THEIR BEAUTY, so please don't hassle me about "purist view"! I just think that a MUSEUM would have tried to make things right when doing them.

Some of the descriptions in the catalog are less than accurate. The description of the Firesweep wagon says 392 hemi. But I enlarged the pic in the PDF of the catalog and it's a poly. Also the blue Firedome convert looks like it has a 2bbl, although the pic isn't that clear. The video images in the live feed were low quality so I couldn't see that much detail as the cars crossed the block. I did notice that the Fury had an aftermarket radio antenna. So I guess an in-person inspection would be mandatory prior to bidding on any of the cars, unless you have enough money that it really doesn't matter.

Ronbo97, the Firedome has a 4-barrel, as advertised. Here's a good picture of its engine.

Thank you Rebels-59 for the updates and pics as well as all who have helped describe these awesome vehicles - I feel ALL the wagons seemed to have gone for "cheep" . . . (way too much for me, but they seemed like great deals) . . .

Uhhhhhhh, let me just ask ANY of you if ANYONE has EVER seen ANY car auction catalog of ANY caliber from the very HIGHEST to the very LOWEST that was totally accurate in its description of the vehicles?   Some of the very finest European auction houses come darn close when doing limited descriptions of vehicles but the more information is given, the further it gets from accuracy.  The people that get hired to write the text for these things somehow never seem to know much about the subject matter and from someone I know and spoke with just yesterday who has done some limited text writing for Barret Jackson on one occasion, I believe that is INTENTIONAL so they can use it as an excuse to avoid lawsuits.  Think about it.  If there are consistent mistakes in the catalogs, then they can claim that in a court of law as a defense that they never are accurate when they describe a car.

Nice cars all...I was fortunate enough to see them altogether when they were in Phoenix in the hands of a private collector, and the collection was still being built. To me,
it is sort of sad to see them broken up like this and sold off as "orphans". Wayne is absolutely correct about the description and condition of these cars. They were all
restored very well, but even the most fastidious amongst us substutes when necessary or takes some personal license. Id've been proud to own any of them (yes, even
the Chevies, Olds, Buicks, and all) if I were still in the game. I believe that there were some real bargains had, but I still wish that there had been a way to keep the
collection together--there will never be anything like it again!

Not to rain on the parade here, and maybe those who have seen the cars up close and personal can comment, but I was told many of the cars are not quite, or far from, "mint" as they make out when you really get "into" them.

Also that these have been "museum" cars rather than "drive" cars, there may be a considerable amount of work to do, brakes, fuel, electrics etc to just make them reliable criuzers. Taking this into account would this make many of these cars very, very expensive at the prices we're seeing here? Just thinking out loud......

That '57 NYer wagon in fairly unrestored condition looked good buying though.

I recall seeing detailed pictures of the '57 New Yorker Town & Country wagon, and taking special note of them, as I have a '57 Windsor Town & Country wagon.
That particular car was not restored, and was a little tatty around the edges, being an original 53-year-old car with 68,000 miles. It had an unclean engine compartment.
IMHO, $25,000 was still an OK sale price for a low-miles, air conditioned Town & Country, but the new owner will be spending large sums to bring it to concours standards.

They broke up Harrah's collection and that was over 3000 cars and they've broken up dozens (hundreds?) of other smaller collections down through the decades of this hobby and new collections keep forming and old ones keep getting broken up and LIFE GOES ON. I don't see a problem. I do see new collections in new locations to go visit........

SeemyEgo - 2009-10-25 9:12 AM Does anyone know the origin of theses cars and how they all made it to Missouri ? In looking at all the photos I see most were taken within 3 miles of my home here in Scottsdale Arizona.

The cars were bought anywhere and everywhere over many years.  I sold the '57 Fireflite convertible directly to Bob Schmidt for restoration for this collection.  It was a rock solid unrestored N. California non-running car that was originally black and white.   Aivar Lejins sold them them the '57 Olds convertible, a running yellow car with red interior that was one-of-one built in that configuration but that isn't the way Patch wanted it done.  So there are two examples for you and both were around 15-16 years ago.    The restorations were done in Tempe, Arizona at Bob Schmidt's shop.

Patch had some of the collection in Arizona. and then it was moved to Branson, Mo. First it was called the Patch collection, and then was convinced to re-name it 57 Heaven. Since the pics that Clive posted were taken, there has been some minor changes to some of the cars as they appeared at the auction.. I had the pleasure to meet Bob who has put much devotion in restoring these cars. He is a great guy IMO who provided me with a guest pass. Bob now has a restoratin shop located at Ralph( can't recall his last name-senior moment- who formerly was the manager at 57 Heaven.) Ralph has a nice all makes car museum just a ways from 57H. His cars are consigned and for sale. He took us back to Bobs shop which was fastidiously clean. Amazing!. A day or two before, they had set the body back on a 56 Fury which belonged to I think, a guy from Washington State. Ralph invited us back to a private party that night and told us he had gotten residual benifit from the auction--I think he sold 9 cars that day-- I believe 5 to a chap from Austrailia-New Zealand?
I am so glad to have been able to see the collectiopn before it was gone. Kinda sad it was to be -no more. I think it was Bob that told us 18 cars were sold to one bidder. It would be interesting to know where all they do go.
I don't know if Neil was there --I didn't see any drool on that Dodge red and white D 500 Convertible!

Was this collection not offered for sale as a lot for 42 million ? .... only to have it sell piecemeal for under seven ? Wow, .... was someone off the mark ! Whoever it was could probably get a job running a gov't program somewhere !!!!

Beyond being the owner, who is this "Patch" character ?

Did anyone else note the lacking presence of distinctive 50's pastel colors ? Most everything was painted up in primaries ... red, blue, green, yellow. For a museum stressing 1957, this seems counterproductive to "wowing" walkthrough (paying) customers. The Mopars were pretty underwhelming in paint selection. How many had their colors changed ?

Well for all the guys who want to spend 10 years fixing a rusted bucket, with the famous “I can restore this car very cheap” this is a good example of what the car woth after been restored.

I'm baaack; altho I didn't go to the festivities, I was out of town and only got to a confuser at lot #42, so I missed the bidding
on the early stuff.

Even with the Line-of-credit thru B of A, I could only have got to $150k, on that CRL convie; somebody REALLY wanted it!

The Museum Curator, Bob Schmidt, told me that the museum was looking to receive about 15-MIL for the entire auction.

He had hoped that the red/white car might bring in 125K.

I haven't added the 'numbers', but, it looks like the museum may have took a bath, except on/for several cars.

That red/white 57 Dodge is a real single-4 D500, but not a Super D500.

The blue/white Coro was also over-bid, imho, by about 15-20K, but, it is more accurately restored than the CRL.

The wagon, at 30K, is the bargain of the day, as it is original and could not, otherwise, be bought-and-restored to that
condition for less than 30k.

Schmidt had told me that owner-Patch had to liquidate the museum to help finance a commercial development, that he was involved in, but that he was under-water-on.

Item Z310, above, was the museum's VERY neat outside neon and metal Signboard/logo; a steal at $4,250.00--it depicted the ass-end (ok: fin) of a Desoto on it.

The sad thing about any car, that gets to be sold for about 100Large is that its new owner will probably never drive the car, anywhere.

If he's got that much spare coin, he's got a lot of other cars to ride around in.

Virtually all of us, on this site, got our cars when they were relatively cheap, to us, so we have had the chance to drive and restore them, over the years.

Buying an expensive intact car, at auction, is akin to buying a Trophy-spouse; nice to look at, and to show off, but everyone knows about how you happened to have acquired "it" (-money) and how much work and attention that you still have to invest, into maintaining that (expensive) thing, even though you probably don't get to 'use' it very often!

As I always say, its NO FUN if you don't drive them. I put 8000 miles on the Saratoga in the last 15 months since I bought it. And, if I were to have had ready cash to bid and buy on one of the 57 Heaven cars, nothing would stop me from driving it whenever possible.

Regarding the wagons: I thought that the $25K NYer was unrestored, but the $30K Sierra was fully restored.

Bargains? I think so . . . I also think they reached about what they "should", now. (The bidding on these 2 very desirable Mopars was a bit disappointing when you see what the Brand X wagons brought.) Nowadays there seems to be a ceiling of 30-35K on the very nicest 57-59 FL wagons, which can cost nearly as much to restore as the $100K+ convertibles. For a year or two now, what I would call really clean, pretty wagons can rarely break $10K at the auction site.

Neil I could do a lot with your $150K line of credit!

Sparky

As I recall, the commissioning of this collection of cars was originally done for Palm Springs, California. The owner even started a really outstanding building to house them there, but finally the Palm Springs "city dads" either booted him out or taxed him out. They then went to Phoenix where Bob Schmidt oversaw the restoration of the whole collection. (How many of you know that there was even a D501 there once?) I don't know who "Patch" is, but that is not the name that I remember as the original owner of the collection. Anyway, after a long time in Phoenix, the collection was sold (I thought) to the city of Branson (maybe just moved there?) for a new venue and ran into financial troubles early on. From what I saw of the many cars that I inspected, they were top notch restorations that any of us would be thrilled to own. Some of the restorations are 10 to 15 years old by now, so to expect perfection is not realistic. I actually thought the cars would bring more, but it probably would have taken a Barrett-Jackson type event to get that kinf of money.

You know what's really SICK (in a good/bad way)...that 150k would cost only $250.00/month --about 3%---interest ONLY owed,
for 7 years, at which point the BofA would refinance the outstanding loan balance into a home mortgage, and, all I gotta do, to tap into it is to write a check, even to 'cash'....

The Coro went for 90+10% commission, but, I'm glad that the CRL didn't 'go' cheaply--altho I feel a little bit bad about
what the car's owner will find out, about its interior finishing and "Super"-D500 provenance; but, hey, he's got deep
pockets!

That 57 Custom Sierra wagon (its interior, at any rate) was in obviously original condition; just another example of seller's puffery. The CSierra wagons shared the same Heavy-Duty interior upholstery as the CRL convertibles.

So basically nobody of this site bought something? 57 Chrysler New Yorker Station Wagon Sold $25,000, was a bargain.
57 Coral Chrysler 300c Convertible sold $125,000, another bargain.

I really like those wagons, but that $25,000 might as well be $250,000 in my situation. I know my 57 could be sold for more than that (multiple Carlisle 1st place winner, many best Mopar, local and regional 1st places, and a couple best of shows). But it would be tough to part with it to take on an unknown quantity.

Does a 57 Dodge Wagon (6 passenger) have the spare tire in the right rear quarter panel, or is it in the normal spot under the cargo area ?

I believe it was optional on 6 passengers.
