Location: Belford, NJ | Need some pictures of a sparkle wheel for a 1960 Plymouth with OUT power steering. To my knowledge, this would be the round one. |

Location: Northern New Jersey | I picked up a 60 Fury Convertible in November, so I'm learning on the fly. My car is a rare(I think) non-power steering or brakes car. As far as I know, they all came standard with the round, solid colored steering wheel. The square or Aero wheel was an option. This was usually clear with a sparkle in it and partially whatever color your interior was.
I am looking to buy an Aero wheel if you know of one thats for sale.

Location: Australia | i always thought that the 60's had the round astro wheels and the 61's had the square ones... but someone told me that the power cars had the square ones and the non power cars had round ones?? not sure, but the '61 accessories brochure only shows the square one? but i have seen 60's and 61's donning both, im sure it you could swap the correct centre section over but im not entirely sure of the 'correct' shaped wheel for your car... adriana |

Location: Long Island | You had to have power steering to get the square wheel. It wasn't an automatic thing. My 61 Fury Sedan had power steering but a round wheel. The Aera wheel was an addional option.
They did however offer a Aero round wheel with clear sections and sparkles for non power steering cars. They are very rare and I have only ever seen one offered NOS on EBAY.
Interestingly the steering shaft size is different on a PS car then a manual, so you cannot put an AERO wheel on a manual car even if you had one! |

Location: Enfield, CT | Yes the 60/61 Aero Wheel (rectangular) will fit power steering cars only. There was an option for a sparkle wheel (round) for non-power steering cars- I have seen both for 60 and 61. You cannot put the round sparkle wheel on a power steering car, and vice-versa. I will see if i can locate some pictures.

Location: Belford, NJ | My car is non-power steering, and honestly I've seen many more square sparkle wheels than round onces online. Although, I couldn't afford them anyway. The main reason I ask is that I think I found a round sparkle wheel, so I'm trying to get a pic of one so I can see if it's the same. |

Location: Belford, NJ | Found this pic, although it's tough to see detail. I just bought one minus the center bar. I have to wait to get a better look at it once it arrives. I believe the center horn button is universal to both the aero and round sparkle wheel.

Location: Northern New Jersey | I do know that the column for power steering and manual are very different, hence the different wheel center size. |

Location: Australia | i guess people that had manual steering didnt have the money to option up to a sparkle/ astro wheel, or they would have just optioned up to power steering... do you think back in the day it was more an option targeted at women? i cant imagine a guy walking into a dealership and saying "yes and i would like the sparkly wheel also, thankyou" but maybe i am wrong... was it only the square wheels that were called astro wheels or were both the square and the round sparkle wheels called astro wheels? adriana
ps. 61 aero.png is the actual pic of the steering wheel in michael charelin's original coral custom suburban... |

Location: Belford, NJ | Not sure if I'm going to keep it just yet. I'm going to try and locate a center bar first. Here is the only picture I have right now.

| on my 60 pioneer dart i converted manual steering to power including the column change but was able to use the manual steering wheel with no mods. i dont know if a power steering wheel would be any different or not hub wise. could this be true for plymouth as well? also i remember seeing a 60 plymouth option list that specifically listed the round sparkle for manual steering and the aero unit for power steering only. i was told that the square wheel would be very hard to handle with manual steering.

Location: northern germany | years ago i restored a 57 plymouth manual steering wheel and because we liked the design, with the fl symbol, put it into my girls 61 desoto with ps. needed some, not very difficult, modifications.

Location: Belford, NJ | Got my wheel last night and it's in much better shape than I had originally thought. No cracks at all in the clear portions, and a few very minor, fixable ones on the backside towards the hub. My original wheel had a lot more cracks that I was able to fill with bondo and sand so you can't even see them. I did that one about 4 years ago and haven't seen any further spearation, so I might try the same on this one. I'm not sure whether I'm going to keep it yet, as I can (and probably should) use the proceeds to get the car to actually run. No use having a really cool wheel on a car that only my neighbors see!!
Now comes the search for a horn bar.... |

Location: Belford, NJ | Back to the drawing board on the debate of non-power steering = egg shaped vs power steering = square. Check out the following link:
http://atlanta.craigslist.org/nat/cto/2218338783.html
I've been in contact with the seller, and he claims that this car is an original power steering car, with the egg shaped sparkle wheel.

Location: Lordstown, Ohio | I was told by a very Knowledgeable Mopar person that you can put the round wheel on the P/S cars. He told me that the shafts were the same P/S and nonP/S. He said the only reason for the square versuses round was to visually notice the difference. He also told me that he interchanged many of the P/S with nonP/s wheels
Just going by what I was told never tried
Wayne
By the way I have really nice one |
