Location: Christchurch, New Zealand | Here an interesting export 1961 Desoto it caught my eye being the owner of a 1960 Dodge Dart http://www.trademe.co.nz/Browse/Listing.aspx?id=293079729
Have seen quite a few earlier Forward Look export cars not a Dodge as a Desoto though?
I know we got the 1960 Dodge Dart here (NZ) as a 4 door only badged as a Pioneer with the Plymouth interior
Not sure where this one came from?

Location: Iowa USA | And RHD to boot, but it looks like a 60 not a 61. wonder if it did not sell till 61 and was titled that way?
Cool you just don't see the late diplomats. I am sure not many were made and much fewer are still around.

That car looks exactly like a 60 Dodge.... Maybe some 60 Dodges were leftover and they were released as a 61 Desoto.....
very strange..... |

Location: Fredrikstad, Norway. (Europe) | Still looking for any 1959 DeSoto Diplomat literature. You know, the '59 Plymouth Fury body/interior with '59 DeSoto front clip. Especially a salesbroshure showing the 4 door hard-top. Any help/leads will be highly appreciated.

Yea, that's a '60 DeSoto Diplomat - As mentioned above, maybe it wasn't titled until '61, but it's a '60 . . . |

Location: Fredrikstad, Norway. (Europe) | From what I can see, nothing differs from the 1960 Dodge Dart series. I can't see the interior, but the steeringwheel is also '60 Dodge. The speedo/instrument cluster is '61 Plymouth.
Very nice car. And these socalled "DeSotos" are rare cars today. Even my (sad condition) '59 DeSoto Diplomat 4 door hard-top is a rare car today. Back when they were available as used cars for free or a few bucks (here in Norway) nobody seemed to be interested in them other than just for "raggar" (party) cars. They were just used up, so to say.
A complete '61 DeSoto front clip will fit right on.

The 1960 and 1961 DeSoto Diplomats were Dodge Darts with DeSoto nameplated and different side trim.
The one for sale is definitely a 1960 model, based on the Dart. At first I thought it might have been built at Windsor, Ontario. There are two tags attached to the firewall and the one on the right looks like the one used by Chrysler of Canada. The one on the left is probably from the importer. I say "thought", as Chrysler of Canada built only 6 cylinder P-D-F models for export and no V8s in 1960.
Chrysler of Canada built only Belvedere (PP1), Dart Pioneer (PD3), and Diplomat Deluxe (PF3) sedans for export, but the "Deluxe" nameplate was a small affair placed just below the "Diplomat" on the rear fenders. This one may have lost its Deluxe.
The American plant built Diplomats in the same models as the U.S. Dart.
The instrument panel is based on the 1960 Plymouth. The 1961 Plymouth, at least in LHD, had two large guage housings at either end of the speedometer pod. Canadian-built LHD Plymouths, Darts and Diplomats all used the Plymouth instrument panel while the American-built Darts and Diplomats used the Dodge panel.

Location: Australia | Another oddity is the Speedo Pod, has Plymouth written on it in white, Yet the Aussie speedos I have, no Plymouth is written on them. Aussie 61's also had 60 plymouth dashes.
As I said in the other thread, my ship date is 1 Nov 1960 , and first registered in Singapore in Feb 1961. The US model year is at October , so maybe they used old stock up and shipped as Diplomats. Cheeky Chrysler!

LHD drive Darts and Diplomats with a Dodge instrument panel and a Dodge steering wheel were built in Detroit. The ones with Plymouth parts were built in Canada. The same goes for the upholstery.
For RHD models, again a Dodge steering wheel means it was built in Detroit, a Plymouth steering wheel means it was built in Canada.
All RHD models used a Plymouth-like instrument panels. Using a 1960 panel into 1961 was not uncommon as production of RHD models was very low.

Location: Christchurch, New Zealand | Nice to know I guess a 61 registered right hand drive is not that common then .............
I do like the extra side trim and two tone paint the Desoto carried - Cheers |

Location: Australia | Im not so sure about the two tone and trim. Looks great on a 57 Desoto but the shape of the 60 Dart is different. The proportions for two toning aint the same.
Here's the seats from a 60 Aussie Phoenix Parts car from Glynda in Adelaide. I've had them re-trimmed and have put them in my diplomat. Used the patterns but not the original materials. In hindisght could have ordered original Phoenix material from SMS , but hell I've lost the seats anyway.
I also so got a full set of good seats for sale if anybody on Australia is interested? Will ship with the fabric off these seats.

First of all it is a 1960. At some point it was titled or registered as a 1961 but this would be incorrect.
I am sure someone will come along and decode the vin information for you soon. |

Location: Finland | Here is couple pictures of the dash of my 1960 Diplomat.Looks like my car has not -60 Plymouth or -60 Dodge Dart dash, but 1960 full size DeSoto dash. The speedo is km/h and it is not "see through" style. Seems that there were many versions made on these export vehicles!
