Location: jersey | Hello all,
New owner of a '58 Sport Suburban. 318 poly/t-flite.
Original california car with ZERO rust. Engine and trans have no miles on them since their rebuilds. Still has the California black plates on it.
Color is Copper Glow Poly, which due to the Cali sun has faded to brown. This is the only pic i have for now, as it's at a friends house getting a renovation. More pics will follow when i have time to get down there, possibly after carlile.
Great site here, with alot of great information.

| What a clean wagon, untouched, to boot. You're a fortunate fellow! Now a question, does the Sport Suburban have a larger rear wheel cutout than the ustom and Deluxe Suburbans, or does it just appear to be bigger in this rendering? Congrats on a gorgeous find, and the color, too!

It just appears to be bigger, and as in many FL advertisements, the car is riding lower than stock. The wheel cutouts are the same for all the wagons.
NICE car!

The car has been in jersey for two years. the floors have no undercoating and look like they just came from the factory. So being that it's in humid jersey, what is the best method of protecting the bare floors? Por-15? undercoating? |

Are you gonna drive it in the rain ? leave it outside all year ? If you have a garage, and don't drive it in the rain, I'd just paint them . . .

Por-15 is only for use on rust - I think you should be fine with regular paint . . .

Ron, it's also the same car that Mike Heredia bought in southern Ca. at an estate sale a few years ago.

If the frame is properly stripped/prepped before its initial painting, the chassis/frame can later be steam cleaned,
as necessary, and the frame can be masked-off and rattle-can refurbished to a like new appearance.
Given my druthers, I'druther have the frame be powder coated, and then, later, merely clean it off and maybe polish
it to renew its appearance.
i KNOW that I'd have the individual suspension pieces be (sent-off-to-be) powder coated in 'bare-steel' color, rather than
to blast them to bare metal and either clear-coat them (the 'clear' doesn't seal-off from re-rusting, over time) or to spray-on
a 'Bare Steel' paint onto them.

Location: bishop, ca | Eric, I hope you don't plan on driving-cruising much above 60 mph, though, unless you've got some sort of
overdrive high gear installed.
I experimented with a 3.55;1 Sure Grip, for about .5 year, before I got fed up with the noisy (busy-) engine, the
negligible performance increase over the 3.36:1 ratio, but the greatly worsended mpg--like about 8 in-town
and 9-10 on the road (at 70-ish).
'Sfun to talk about a low rear end ratio, but it ain't fun to live with one.
Kind of like marrying a high-maintenance beautiful woman, who can't cook and won't keep a clean house
and who 'talks'---engine noise---a lot (think: L. Lohan or P. Hilton).
You'll see....

Plus i scored the entire rear drum to drum for $500, so it's stayin for awhile. |

How "tall" of a tire are you planning on putting on ? 3.55's might be O.K. - They will be "fun" stoplight to stoplight !!!

Worst part was the mpg going into the toilet.
The Sure Grip is nice to brag-on, but I wasn't about to burn-off my $800buk tires, and, unless you're into decorating
your local pavements, or driving in loose dirt/snow, or, of course, drag racing your ride, there is no practical benefit
to having a S.-G. in your car.

Location: ZH, Switzerland | Hello, it's a very nice Suburban. Please keep it running.
About the Plymouth Poly engine. As far as I know all Plymouth Poly came with a factory external balancer. Elder Dodge engines (V8) didn't feature an external balancer right from the factory and the result was a soon engine failure (crankshaft cracked). The engine in my truck (a 1962 Dodge W200 Power Wagon based convertion truck) is a 318 Poly engine. At the balancer is the timing mark.
If I were you I would look around for an external balancer right now. Good luck.
Happy motoring

Location: ZH, Switzerland | I'm sorry I was not talking about the balancing - my earlier statement is referring to the torsion dampener.
Balancing: for the newer engines following rule is valid: except for the LA 360 all Mopar small blocks are internally balanced. The Plymouth Poly engine is the predecessor of the later LA 318 - many parts are common and I don't see why the balancing method should have changed during the production cylce.
Happy motoring!

She'll be repainted in as close to the original color as possible, with a max wedge hoodscoop, interior will be redone in as close to factory patterns as i can, torq thrust rims, FURYJIM sport tone inserts, a modern sound system(hidden) a rebuild 413 with a bracket master 2 cam, performer rpm intake, holley 750 carb, headman shorties( should work since it's a dodge chassis) and 3 inch exhaust with bullet mufflers. late model 727 and a b-body 8 3/4 with 3.91's, as this is what i already have. Would like to put in 3.55's for the drive to Carlisle.
It'll also be getting discs and all new suspension pieces. |

Location: Southern California | Hi Eric, welcome to the Forwardlook.
Thats a great lookin 58 burban you got there. I use to own that car before I sold it to Joe in NY. Its nice to see some pics after a 2 year absence. below are some pics of what she looked like the last day I had it before shipping her off. Dont know if you know the story on the car but its pretty cool. Heres the short version. I forget whom here but someone here I believe Savoy something told me about some old cars that were in a garage in La Mesa near San diego Ca. On a whim I decided to go see the cars at that address, turns out one of them was a 58 plymouth sport suburban which had been parked in that garage since 1970 or so. This car was well preserved no rust! The car was covered in 40 years of dirt and dust. to my surprise after I washed her she cleaned right up The car had belonged to the father of a woman named Linda Peterson who had bought the car new and drove it for 12 years before it was parked . The home had been abandoned for sometime yet somehow the car remained in that garage all those years. I have some pics somewhere of how I found it covered in dirt and dust, I'll see if I can dig them up for you. Anyhow congrats on that car you wont find another survivor like it

Having said that, I think you should make it how you want it, otherwise it will never actually feel like your car. Still, I wouldn't tell too many people what the car used to be as you will have to defend your choices for the rest of your ownership. |

The ONLY time a car is original is when it comes off the assembly line. If something is changed, it's not original anymore.
Nothing i'm doping is preventing the car to be returned back to original appearance if i want to. |

Easier said than done.
Was the original engine and transmission gone? How about original radiator? I remember when the big craze was Pro Street. That went away and now all those chopped and molested cars are Pro Touring. There's plenty of cars that have been geeked up in one way or another. The solid originals are continuing their slow and painful death.
All said, you stepped up with the cash when the oppurtunity presented itself. I personally, would have looked for more a project car if I were going the Resto Rod or Pro Tourer route. |
|
|
|
Location: Parts Unknown | That was my original point. Nice originals should be saved. There are plenty of pre-molested
cars to be further molested to suit one's taste out there without messing up another original.
It is your car now, but one man's "cool" is another man's shameful embarrassment. No one
would be laughing behind your back with a well restored original like yours. I can guarantee the
opposite is not true.

| after reading all the input, responses, and commentary.. i figured i'd address responses to some of them.... first- regarding the possibility of "tall tales" about fuel mileage with 3.91s... anyone who has doubts is invited to take a 6 hour trip, calculate miles covered, and gallons used... 3,91s are very "street" gears.. though i do have a few conservative geared [2.76, 3.23] vehicles... 4.10s start bringing the revs up, 4.56s [with the way people drive now] can keep you out of the fast lane. as an engineer, i'm not going to bore anyone with theory on volumetric efficiency, but the basis people give to low revs with gas mileage is a very typical laymen assumption/mistake, and engine is most efficient at it torque peak, why a 500 caddy is geared with sub 3 gear ratios... 425ft-lbs at 2200 rpm or so, in my case torque peak is around 5000, so taching 4400 for a few hours is efficient.
as for harmonics on poly blocks, in 57/58 only fury [FP31/FLP8] 318s were so equipped, 277, 301, 318 standard engines had stamped pulley/hub assemblies.
"they're only original once" is true, and had this one been as original as mike, joe, and eric had thought... the mileage was either 113,xxx or 213xxx miles, as the trans was on its second rebuild, with doubled-up intermediate>direct drum repair thrust bushings [to compensate for embedded originals failing].. the pedals were worn to the metal cores, as well as the fact the front seat was reupholstered, and then driven enough to destroy the replacement seat. cylinder bores were naturally ridged to between .007-.012 over.
some people strive to preserve a piece of history by restoring to stock specs, which is nice, and i have done that for significant vehicles of my own, many forwardlook and others- including a 57 premier convertible, 58 golden commando savoy, and in the near future 57 fury and 57 savoy dealer campaigned racer. what eric did here is what he wanted to do, and in reality only made it better- someone who sticks with drum brakes to stay original then opts to drive it regularly is jeapordizing their own vehicle- think about it- when the G8 in front of you executes a panic stop, you're rearending him! |

Location: jersey | Thanks guys.
That's the Factory Copper Glow color. I was lucky enough to get this car from fellow forum member Joe ( Christine's Revenge)
This is the custom roof paint by Fury Jim.

Location: Falicon 06 France | Very nice wagon, that's the same color my 58 wagon ( custom suburban ) was painted when left the factory. It is now black but will recover it's original one. Do you have modern ref paint for Copperglow to see if I can make it done here in France ??
Also, was it a 6 passengers model or a 9 passengers ??? |

Location: jersey | I could never paint like that Fury Jim did that.
This was the car that Mike Heredia found in a garage in cali back in '08. He in turn sold it to Joe Caldwell, and i purchased it from him. Keeping it in the Forward Look family.
The paint was matched using the data tag that was taken to the paint supply house and matched. It's the closest we could get it. From what i'm told the original paint used crushed glass to get the "iridescent" look to it. |

Location: jersey | I got NOS tail light housings, a rear bumper, reverse light pods, reverse light kit, and fin tops. So the rear of the car has all NOS chrome, except for the lock mechanism.
