| I have a '57 DeSoto FireSweep wagon. It's an all white car with a green interior. Total project going on here. All my pics of it are on my old computer so I can't post any right now. It's a pretty basic car, doesn't seem to have a lot of options on it, though I'm not sure exactly what would be considered optional as opposed to standard equipment. The plan so far is to get it running and driving then worry about body/paint/interior. Getting ready to pull the engine out next weekend, then give it a diagnostic. Maybe keep original drivetrain, maybe swap out for a 413 I've got. Body will be turquoise and black two tone. Have the best day everyone.

As long as you tell us the truth - I wish you'll destroy as much Audis as you can. This would be much more fun than destroying an FL car... (;-)

This would be much more fun than destroying an FL car... (;-) Happy motoring! Dieter Dieter, don't worry, I would never kill a FL car! Some people just have no sense of black humour so its good to find the point where they get totally annoyed You are right about the Audi's, but I have to add that I especially hate Opel's (except the ones built with GM 327 small-blocks long time ago...). Not sure the fault is in the car industry, or in the people who buy them... Bring back the fins!
Btw. is your Mowag/Dodge ex-fire department vehicle? I see them sometimes for sale in Switzerland... I also have 2 Swiss build vehicles, but unfortunately nothing that I could post here...

I was swinging back and forth (take it serios or as black humor). I really couldn't imagine to destroy a FL car even though it looks like Miss Belverdere.
About Opels, I totally agree with your opinion. The only good Opel is the V8 Diplomat (/w a 327 Chebby engine). Once I bought three Opels - the first, the last and the only one.
Yes my Mowag (Dodge) was a fire recsue light truck. Mowag bougth the rights to put their name plate to the hood. It's the car I'm owning for 7 years now.
Kind regards - Happy Motoring!
Dieter
BTW: the wagon you posted is looking very, very good - the engine's running (:-) |

D500 Suburbans can only be determined by recording all 18k D500's that were built, from the Historical Society's
microfilm records of the total 287.5K 1957 Dodges that were built.

Location: Lovely place | I think the guy who once ordered the D500 Suburban was the type of guy I like! That is so wierd combination the buyer must have been a hot rodder. That's a real sleeper... So good luck Jeff, you can now spend your evenings going through those 287500 records and count how many were built. You might want to visit your optician first. If I had little bit more money/space in these days I would certainly ask your price for it... I have seen a trend which is slowly giving more credit to these station wagons - everyone likes pick-up trucks but these grocery-getters are appreciating in coolness-factor! ..and they are very practical! Btw Dieter, you aren't too far from me, I live 6-7km from Basel. If you ever come to this direction, let me know... Beer is cheaper (and better taste) this side of the border LOL I also just noticed you mention in your private profile the Mowag was an ex-fire vehicle, doh!

Location: WA/USA | Definitely NOT a bolt on. The car was torched off at the firewall and a 2x4 frame built, z-d up about 4 inches. The Volare/Aspen front suspension unit is reasonably easy to attach after that because it is completely unitized. As long and the frame rails are built right you just slide it under and weld it on. Viola - disk brake and no longitudinal torsion bars to get in the way. The engine is just set on the stock trans mount and motor mounts fabricated from there. A 2-inch notch had to be made in the Volare K to fit the 440 pan.
If I have time some day I'll detail it with some photos I took.

When did the ribs get added to the wagon roofs? I've seen 2 1960 Dodge models one Polara and one Pioneer wagon and they have flat smooth roofs whereas my Pioneer wagon has ribs running from front to back same model year. Can anyone shed any more light on this one? |

Location: NW Ohio | Hi All! Just joined this site after many people recommended it, and had to respond to this thread. The hubby and I just picked up this beauty over the weekend! Haven't had much time to dig up info on it yet. 1957 Dodge Suburban 2-door. Was excited to kill 2 birds with 1 stone: we wanted a fin car, and I wanted a wagon.

Location: bishop, ca | Well, HRB, the first thing you can do is check (carefully!) up/behind the glove box, to see if your car's Broadcast Sheet
might still be masking-taped there.
Broadcast Sheets have also been found, folded-up, underneath the floor covering, lying on the floor pans.
You can post up an image of its Paint/Trim data plate 'down' on our Fender tag Decoding message board, too.
You have a rare Surviving car model, there, because most-all of the 2-door wagons got used hard and put-away wet,
meaning that they were used up quickly.
Somebody parted out your car's fender 'crowns', but they are abundant (being installed on every Dodge) and they are 'easy' to re-chrome,
if you find it/them with pits on them.
Finding a roof rack is not impossible, too, and that would really dress-up your ride.
Lotsa possibilities!
Welcome aboard!

Austin, you must consider turning that '58 into a burrito wagon. What with the Mexican tailgate, it would be a natural to
sell tacos y burritos from the back!

You are close! See due to strict import laws leftover 1958 bodies had to have one body panel from the 1959 model year affixed. This makes the car a new 1959 model on the books in the US. In this case a 1959 Dodge tailgate was used. The car is then registered as a 1958 model after crossing the border. This loophole allowed the cars to be imported at a much lower cost. Since the car is technically a year old and considered a much cheaper car due to the Plymouth badging on the front end as the inspectors only viewed the front and Serial number. Chrysler Corp you sure were smart! And no one knew that they were getting leftovers! The full model name is: 1958 Plymouth-Dodge Sport Suburban Spectator. You can still find advertisements for these cars. I'm not real good a Spanish but the ads translate to "Plymouth-Dodge the best of both worlds" |

That '61 Dodge is spectacular, Herbert. Very nice. The little Valiant is my-t-cool as well!
Here are two wagons from my humble stable, the green '61 is the same one I posted above, now transformed back to the
workhorse she originally was. The 2-door Suburbans don't go for all the flash, we are all business!

Location: DFW, TX | Why not. Here's another post of my beater '57 Plymouth. Yep, I still have it.
It is featured in the book 'America's Coolest Station Wagons' and was even pictured on the Contents page.
Here's a photo taken by the guy that owned it before me. He had planned to hack it to pieces to make an 'Americana' sculpture out of it. It was rough but I couldn't let it get destroyed.
Not a lot of options on this one. Powerflite, radio, and cigarette lighter were about it. It still doesn't have a heater.
