Location: Georgia | After a lengthy search, I've finally found the impossible, a 1961 Plymouth Suburban 2 door!
Legend has it, that this particular wagon was one of 13 ordered by the US Air Force as camera equipment haulers, ordered without a backseat, a 3 passenger! This one spent the majority of her life in a hangar at Minot AFB, North Dakota, and when sold at auction some years ago, reportedly only had 9,000 original miles. However, the engine and transmission (slant 6/3 speed) was yanked out and white latex paint was applied with a brush, at some point. I don't have any real verification of any of this, save a "US Property" plate on the inner fender, and a few photos of her in white. If you have any ideas how to research her history, please let me know! I was also told, under the white latex was original olive green. I'm not sure when USAF vehicles switched to blue?
Then an 'old-school' hot rodder picked her up, and transformed her into what she is right now!
He is a really nice guy, and didn't really wish to sell, but sometimes a little pestering pays off! He thought this was the ugliest car in the world, and he didn't mind a bit when I told him my plans for her.
She's got a 1964 225 slant 6, bored .030 and a small comp cam, plus alum intake and clifford headers, true duals with sawed off cherry bombs (LOUD!), 390 Holley 4 bbl, all mated up to a Chrysler 4 speed.
The interior has two buckets and console pieces from a Chrysler 300M.
The paint speaks for itself, and the tailgate lettering says it all!
She had some aftermarket wheels, which the former owner kept.
I plan to restore her to a more original state, and the interior will be the bigger challenge it appears. The body is stock, save the funky mirrors and missing emblems, and I hope I don't discover surprises under that wild paint. I'll leave the drivetrain as is for now, it's kinda fun, except I'll raise the body back up, and I'm sure my Y will request some quieter mufflers!
I'm undecided what the color will be, if anyone could help out with the data plate, that will be step 1 for the paint decision. I'm actually considering a USAF theme, but need alot more research first!
I couldn't get a good photo of the data plate, but it reads as follows:
SO NUMBER BDY TRM PNT
0501 7195 255 999 602
If anyone could direct me how decode, please.
Enjoy the photos (if you can look directly! )
Pete

I'm looking forward to what you do with it - paint would be priority number one with me !!!!

You can have a lot of fun making an era correct rod out of that stick 2-dr Suburban!
You could go for a Surf-wagon look, too; there must be some vintage roof racks available, at the major national salvage
yards--it'd look bitchin with a vintage paint scheme, and with a 'rack' on it.

Wasn't someone here looking for a 2dr '61 Suburban...? |

The sad-thing is that neither the behind-dash Broadcast sheet nor the IBM card copy will confirm precisely what was 'special' about the interior fitment--they'll only show the "999" code, but will not explain what it was--although the Broadcast Sheet, that MAY have been dropped onto the floor pan, before the carpeting and the upholstery was installed, probably stated in its "Instructions" box what the 'special' upholstery was to have been.

The fact that it had no back seat would be enough for a '999' code.
As the car was built for the American government, Chrysler may have had special code numbers for the various paint schemes the US government specified. Chrysler of Canada used three numeric paint codes for special paint jobs when they went to letters for production vehicles.
Should definitely get the build record from Chrysler Historical.

Your car may well have considerable value to a Military Vehicle collector, if/when properly restored to its
original condition.
The car's OEM color WILL appear beneath the brake master cylinder mounting plate, on the firewall (and probably
behind the perimeter of the heater housing).
You can see where 'they' merely masked off that M/C plate when they 'hit' it with the day-glow Orange.
This would also make a fantastic era-correct Surf Wagon; but the USAF-route will not be particularly difficult to 'follow', as this car is so much of a purely utilitarian (stripper-) model.
You also know the car's FSN 'number', for door-stenciling USAF identification painting.

Dorsey, she's got disc setup on the front from a '79 Chrysler, the master cyl. is late '60s era. They work great, but will prevent me from going to original 14" wheels.
The 'old skool' slant 6 is terrific. I'll be leaving that as is for now, it is quite fun.
I've got a few minor issues to work out before tearing her apart for paint, but I've got to get those colors off soon!

Ralph, those rims are standard Mopar '67 and earlier 15x5.5 wheels, which take the bigger (10-inch) dog-dish hubcaps that grace our FL cars. However, I had to use some 3/4" spacers on the front to allow for disc brake clearance. It was not my first choice to use spacers, but I did want to keep the original style hubcaps without re-doing the front brakes, as they were done with the Volare conversion, rather than an AAJ kit or other that would allow for the 14-inch rims.
Brent, I have always been a fan of the "plain Jane" cars, your comment is a fine compliment! Thank you!

The rear end was swapped to a '72 Challenger 8 3/4 with 2.94 gears, so she maintains well on the freeway. I cannot take any credit, as this was all done by the previous owner.

Location: Georgia | Well, I'd better update this thread, as I've finally finished the interior after a lengthy wait for SMS to make the door panels.
I tried to make it appear stock, while keeping a few of the 'upgrades' such as aftermarket gauges and 4-on-the-floor.
The shifter handle is actually from a '61 Valiant, I had to bend it a little at the base to make that wonderful curve fit well.
Also, the previous owner had mounted little generic turn signal indicators beneath the speedometer, as he had replaced the
original locations with aftermarket gauges. I did not want to loose these, but didn't like the little orange buttons. I ended up
using the parking brake indicator as my turn signal indicator, it doesn't distinguish between left or right turns, but is bright
enough to let me know its on. Plus, it gives a more original look to the dash.
Also, I installed carpet (which was not original to the car), as the rubber matting is pretty much impossible to find.
Here are a few before and after photos, I hope y'all enjoy.

When I saw some photos of it (..." a rust free original") after buying him, I saw some major white over spray in the wheel wells.
Turns out that that new paint covered some shoddy rust out cover-up work all along his lower areas (he had lived in the Chi-Town area).
Rattle can gloss black restores the appearance of OE undercoating very nicely.

did well with no problems, except the windshield wipers refused to work. Thus, our trip was cut a little short by an irritating
storm named Colin.
Anywho, We decided to travel the old ways, not setting a tire on any interstates. Our first stop was Ashburn, GA, to take a photo
in front of the huge peanut, a monument to the industry that has made South Georgia famous, um, if it is famous, that is.
Next stop was a cool vintage motel in downtown Tifton, GA.
Then we finally made it to the Florida State Line.

Location: Georgia | Well, we finally started seeing water, bringing a smile to my face! We made it to the "poor man's keys", Cedar Key.
Attached also is a photo of our lodging, no Marriott or Holiday Inn here!
Thank goodness.

Location: Georgia | In these last two photos, I tried to re-create an image I bought from the Florida Archives.
The black and white is on 2nd Street, downtown Cedar Key, taken in 1965.
I positioned my wagon in almost the same spot, 51 years later.
Hope you enjoy the photos.

| Looks good. Wish you were closer, it would be cool to get the wagons together for some pics. My interior is just about done. I need to get some updated pictures on here.

Location: little rock, AR | I didn't realize that's a heater delete car. Also, since its a radio delete send me the speaker grill and I'll send you some Arkansaw Chicken wire to replace it with. LOL |

| Oldwood, I got that Fury dash trim polished up and installed in the wagon. I'll have to post some pics. Really woke up the dash. |

Thanks Derek! Please update your thread when you finish your interior. I can't wait to see what she looks like.
Maybe one day I'll take a longer journey with the wagon and we can meet in person--since our cars are twin sisters from birth!
Dorsey, she actually had a heater new (being from North Dakota, I suppose the USAF didn't want their airmen to freeze!) but it is not connected and I've got the block off plate on the dash. I'm still holding out to find a real firewall blockoff plate.

| I know this is a old thread, but if you still have this wagon,I have the perfect luggage accessory for you. I got these at a garage sale awhile back. They are US Air Force carry cases for 35mm cameras. It's probably what your wagon used to haul for the AF.

Location: Georgia | Those boxes are cool, Rocco! And, yes, they would look good in the back of my wagon!
What size are they and how many?

| There are 2 ,They measure 21x13x17 . They are fairly sizable and military qualiity. I believe these would held suvailance 35 mm film cameras for underwing aircraft. I also have (but have misplaced) 35 mm film from the Thunderbirds air show footage where the cameras were used. The films were dated 1959. I believe I paid $20 for the cases. There yours for $20 plus shipping. If your interested?
