my speedometer cable broke inside the speedometer and my attempts to remove the speedometer have been thwarted by the steering column.
what's the best way to get the speedo out?
seems i have two options: remove the sterring column bracket, or remove entire dash?
maybe there is another way?

Location: Beaumont TX | I need to pull the speedometer out of my 1955 Plymouth to repair it and fix the odometer. Does anyone know how hard it is to pull the speedometer without pulling the dash? Does anyone know the steps to take to pull the speedometer? Just looking for a place to start and would like to understand the size and misery of the job before I start. |

Location: Ponder, TX | Maybe my recall is failing, but I've removed and replaced speedometers many times on my ''55 and '56 Plymouths and I don't remember ever having to remove anything else, but the most I would expect to do is lower the steering column. I do know that I never had to remove the dash.
Facing the speedometer, there will be three nuts holding the meter in place. They will be located at 9, 1 and 3 o'clock and will be on threaded standoffs approximately 1" high, not against the back of the dash. The brackets on the meter are slotted so you don't have to remove all three nuts. If you remove one on each side and just loosen the third, it should slide out.
There is a flexible wire bundle clamp welded to the top of the speedometer that lets you unclamp the bundle without tools. It also works best if you unscrew and remove the drive cable before trying to pull the speedometer away from the dash. It can be reinstalled after the meter is fastened back in place.
While you are at it, there is an oiling felt inside a screw-in cap sitting on the side of the shaft, so add a few drops of oil while you have it out.
Sorry if I missed something! I can take a picture of the back of a speedometer if my instructions are unclear.

Location: So. Cal | The real trouble with doing this is that any wires you even breathe on will lose their insulation. If you don't want to re-wire your whole car yet, be really careful of what you touch under there. |

| What speedometer cable are you using? I have bought two different ones, one from Andy Bernbaum and one from Atlas Obsolete and neither one fits the back of the speedometer. Both are too small in diameter and will not slide over the back of the fitting. Also, the inner cable doesn't want to fit in the hole where it belongs. |
