When I stripped the differential on my 60 Imp to re-seal it and re-bearing the axles I had a problem with setting up the axle end float.
The new bearings were manufactured with a large radius on the bearing I.D. This large radius, coupled with the the shallow shoulder (which the bearing seats against) on the axle caused the bearings to butt against the axle shoulder on the bearing radius, not the machined face of the bearing. This caused excessive end play, which could not be adjusted using the factory (service manual) method. (Because the bearings were installed too far onto the axle)
I did fix this by making shims to push the outer bearing cones further into the axle tubes, thus reducing the end float to the spec's.
Not tested yet, but I am confident it is good to go.

Steve.
