Hey Guys , I would like some input... We are redoing my 58 Plymouth convertible. I have had this car for over 30 years and the 1980's
restoration has seen better days , the interior and top are worn and sun beaten (Not correct insert material) But the car still looks great we also have the motor out my friend John is rebuilding it and the trans.
The car has the original color and i,m tired of it , I love the Yellow on Rons 58 sports coupe and ,I think I want to change it. Alot of people think I,m NUTS But it will be a nice change and being its all has to be done anyway...
Whats your thoughts? Photos attached.. Thanks & HAPPY MOTORING! Victor.

I think you have about the best color Plymouth offered in 58. Rare as hell, too !

While I think the yellow is pretty, it is also a color that was available in 38, 53, 65, 78, 89
and today.

Why do something so ordinary, especially when it is such a rarely seen period color AND it
is original to the car ? Kinda like painting the Whitehouse yellow. Sure, you could do it. It might
even look good. But it just wouldn't be right.

I will paint my DeSoto that color when the time comes. Blue is just too ordinary. And I like blue !

Seeing as your Belvedere convertible is THE prettiest Plymouth ever built, I vote "purple."

If you're hellbent on painting it another color, I'd vote coral but I like the yellow as well. I think any color would look mighty fine on that car.

What color top will you go with? I think you have to consider the whole package. I like the yellow, but not with the yellow top like in the photo.

I think yellow would get a Black canvas top if I stay with the rose color (Coral Poly) another white top, My 57 had a white top for years now is red & white with Black canvas top,
I find the Black canvas stays nicer and when my convertibles are out the tops are down. So you never see them anyway. Thanks for your input, I am still not decided...
But must decide soon! HAPPY MOTORING! Victor.

Here's another 58 in yellow. Whatever color you choose would be cool. Though I prefer the aluminum inserts.

I have saved many pictures of that Plymouth as it is now. Please, don't change that colour!!! It's very rarely seen and one of the best colours for a 1958 Plymouth!

I know the feeling, when you get tired of your own car, but that car's colour is perfect!...

I think the yellow would be just beautiful with the black canvas top. Go for it. One suggestion though---blackwall tires would make the car look more masculine. I'm a heathen when it comes to black anyway. Maybe you should paint it black (like your '53 Caddy convertible) to go along with the top and the tires:)----Fred

There is no shortage of both yellow or black Belvedere ragtops. Why not just buy another car in the color
you want ?

When I do the DeSoto in this color, it will get a charcoal sweep and black top to counter the feminine lavender.
The feminine colors matched with white is just too predictable. I want the contrast to create a more elegant look.

Victor -

Who owns the yellow convert with the yellow top ? Looks like he has a bunch of nice 50s Mopars.

If you're looking to go with the factory yellow, bear in mind that it's actually lighter than what is portrayed in the above photos and on the paint chip cards that you see at swap meets. We matched my color with what is in a 58 Plymouth dealer paint chip booklet that was not exposed to sunlight. You probably have one. It's got a black cover.

Love the yellow color, but my choice would be Misty Green with a white sweep and white conv top.

I hope this restoration will last for the next 30 years (I'll be 83)Like the present has lasted almost 30. So I want to be happy with it. I really love the input, seems most of you guys and my friends here think the Coral is a nicer color,
But I think the yellow is also great and I am leaning that way. I can't buy another 58 convert.. So I will have to stay with this one, Unless my Lotto ticket pays off! Well Thanks & HAPPY MOTORING! Victor.

Something like 70K. Poor resto, lots of bondo, brakes that pulled like crazy. The thing that made him crazy, though, is that the throttle linkage jammed so he couldn't decelerate. Not being a 'car guy', he was scared sh*tless !

One of the unique characteristics of our old FLs is the color pallet that Mopar made available to the buyer. Lots of yellow old cars out there but your original color is part of the Mopar heritage attached to the car. I'd vote to keep it the way they made it.......................just my .02

Don't think I've ever seen a ragtop in Misty Green. Also known as Buzzard Puke Green.

You gotta ask yourself, though .... What kind of sick mind wants a car painted Buzzard Puke Green ?

Looking good, Victor. What kind of damage did it sustain in the storm ?

This is a chance to see how small the 11" drums on the Plymouth are, compared to the larger 12" brakes on the senior models.

As long as you're redoing the car, I would suggest going to tinted glass for both the windshield and side glass.

Only storm damage was water 1/2 way up the wheels , so new brakes and tires The Motor was tired as is the 1980 's interior and the paint is dulled quite a bit. Also the white top has seen better days, The cars that were really Flooded (48 DeSoto,40 Plymouth , 2 Checkers 1 taxi 1 sedan, were all totaled .
Than taken by Insurance co, Also the 36 Ford was with the Plymouth and needed brakes and bearings and tires.I am also thinking about a disc brake conversion. I want this to be the last restoration and hope it lastest as long as the 1st time.
The good thing is being garaged and only used in the summer for the last 28 years, its coming apart easy and its not that dirty at all. HAPPY MOTORING! Victor.

I was fortunate to find a 12" setup from a 58 Chrysler for my Plymouth. The car stops nicely. Short of that, I would recommend going to disc brakes, as the Ply braking system is not really adequate (IMHO).

Ron ~

Did you simply swap the spindles on out, to install the 12" system, or did you swap more ?

Did you swap a 12" rear end under the car too ? Can 12" be installed to a Plymouth rear end ?

Front: Same spindles. You swap out the backing plate, center support and drums. Then use fresh springs, shoes, seals, bearings, hose and wheel cylinders.

Rear: Same rear end and shaft. Then swap and replace as above.

Remember, this is the setup that came on Plymouth Police cars. You can confirm everything through the parts book.

I drove my Ply for a few years with the 11" brakes. They would slow the car down at best. With the 12" drums and power brake setup, it stops like it should.

So, all one really needs to do this is the bolt-on stuff from the spindles on out. No need to swap spindles.

Right ?

Just pull the gear off a DeSoto or Chrysler parts car and go (?).

I think if it were mine I'd do Coral Poly with a black top. Does the new interior material have any black or dark charcoal color to tie it together with a black top?

I've always thought that Coral Poly (aka Metallic Coral) with Jet Black was the sharpest color combo offered by Plymouth in '58. So, if it was me: Coral Poly body, Jet Black sidesweep Sportone (leave off the aluminum inserts), black top.

I know I already "voted", but with the other pics you posted, I can't believe you would consider changing that colour! Coral poly is FANTASTIC!

I think you should keep the original color, like the color and the unusual.

I'm curious too, Victor. Have you decided on the paint colour yet?

It's kind of cool that you picked complementary colours - from one opposite on the colour wheel to the other.

Both great colours! Glad it's not me who has to chose!

I am not sure why this is even open for consideration. A yellow car is common, be it a 33 Packard
or a 78 Datsun. It may look good, but there is nothing special about yellow.

I would bet money that your car is the one and only coral poly Belvedere ragtop in existence, AND
it looks like a million bucks !

Vic, is the Doc right? is it the only one that you know of?

If so, then I vote with Doc. Maybe you can come up with some other way to personalise the car without changing too much. What about a custom colour top?

Agree... maybe a black top and white/black interior with the coral would rekindle the love!

In my opinion it doesn't really matter the colour,, a 58 Plym in all body styles is exceptional, Victors Convertible is Next Level. Nice work Amigo,

Very beautiful color on that Belvy! Its a very nice yellow, not too bright and then not too pale where you can hardly tell it even is a yellow. Its almost like a pastel color, very 50ish and seems to fit the car perfectly.
