Could anybody tell me if the '51-55 331 hemi 6V starters are all identical? I have a very early starter '51-2 which would be from an integral b/housing will this work on a '55 331?
Thanks!

should interchange. 51-6 use 146 tooth ring gear & 51-55 are 6V. '56 is 12V & 146. 57 & up is 12v and172 count

I just read some interesting information in a parts catalog. It looks like the 146 tooth Chrysler starters will directly interchange with the '51-'53 Oldsmobile V8 (6 Volt) starters, which also have 146 tooth flywheels. Also, the '57-'58 Chrysler starters with 172 tooth flywheels will interchange with '54-'56 Oldsmobile starters that are even the same 12Volt drive voltage. So that may open up more possibilities if someone can't find an original Chrysler starter for a decent price.
How is this useful? I found aftermarket hi-torque starters for the Oldsmobile that are $60 cheaper than the equivalent Hemi starter, and yet they have the same part number!!
