Location: McComb, Mississippi | I haven't got the car just yet but it is paid for. It is a running rust free 1961 dodge polara sedan. It's going to need a general tune up to get her back roadworthy. Also my girlfriend bought a 64 dodge dart so we both are driving mopars. That's all I have for now. I will keep this updated regularly. |

One of the things that your car needs (esp. in MS), is A/C.
Finding & installing a complete OEM unit would be a challenge, but that's what this hobby is all about, and, your car is
'rough' enuf that changing-over its dashboard, etcetcetc...to A/C would not mean hurting the car's "already-nice" appearance.

Im going to hook up the fuel tank tomorrow and start rebuilding the brakes and replace all power steering, fuel hoses, and radiator hoses. Im going to drive the hell outta it! Nah.. But im gonna enjoy it. I got a buddy who is a professional painter and he is going to help me paint it. I am going to replace the foam under the seat covers and get the upholstery shop to restitch all the seams and repair the few minor tears. Did I mention that this car is rust free???

Location: cornpatch county, Southwest IOA | C.B.---do you realize that is a California black licence plate car? That is valuable to some people. That plate was issued when the car was brand new and stayed with the car when it was sold or traded. IIRC. That is kinda neat as it shows people that the plate was issued to the car when brand new. I got Calif. black plates with my 64 Dodge that was never sold out of the state till I got it. You may be able to register and licence your car and use the black plates you have..I didn't notice, do those plates have a year stamped in them?...........................MO |

Location: Arizona | Not necessarily. The ideal brake system is balanced front and rear and maintains that balance under all conditions. The balance is the result of a lot more then whether the front and rear shoes are "the same". In a simple system there is no way to actually have it balanced in "normal stops" and also balanced in "HARD stops. That's because of weight shifting during a HARD stop. To make the system seem "good" or "powerful" especially when it's not power brakes, the manufacturer "balances" things so that the rear brakes do about half the work. That's fine for "normal" stops. But in a hard stop, where 70% of the weight winds up on the front wheels, that causes the rear brakes (which now only have 30% of the weight) to lock up way before the fronts do. The rear usually goes sideways, possibly spinning the car. So until you have driven the car and get a feel for how well balanced the brakes are in HARD stops I wouldn't worry about redoing the fronts. ANother option is to install a proportioning valve in the rear brake line so you can dial in the split between the front and rear. I had to do that years ago with my 76 4X4 Blazer to keep it from going sideways every time I stopped in the rain. But it made it so the fronts did most of the work in normal stops and consequently the pedal effort went up for normal driving. |

Location: bishop, ca | The rear (any-) brake shoes will need to be bedded to the linings before you'll really know how they perform.
Casually (and concernedly) ask your shop what the linings' ratings are.
The best lining material is rated FF/FF (Wet/Dry)....but don't volunteer any knowledge to them.
Just say that a friend asked you to find out the stopping-rating of their linings.
That shop had better know, and tell you, the quality of those new linings.
The ratings may well (should) be printed onto the linings, and you could also ask them where the linings were/who
manufactured them.
You shouldn't try to slam-on the brakes, initially, but, several 3/4 efforts, from 50 MPH, slowing down to 30-ish, should give
you some indication of how the rears and fronts will work out, together.
After that, you can stop from 30-40 MPH a few times, over several days, but I would not suggest over-heating the new linings
(even on the lazy-rears) which might cause them to glaze over.
I'd still recommend that you get some wrecking yard brake shoes and get them re-lined by Firm Feel; that way you can do an A:B
comparison with your existing front shoes, or install them and, then, have your local shop re-line the existing ones--if you really
want to do a "fresh" A:B comparison.

Not sure why but I missed the original post on your car........
I might be in a minority group because I like 4 door sedans but too bad....
Not sure why but I really like the look of '61 Dodge's, they kinda have a "sad" looking front which is the opposite to my '59 Dodge's "angry "looking front.
I really dig the original "as found "condition of your Dodge I'd be proud to own that one !!
Good find there, and doubly good getting hold of it's past history too.

Location: McComb, Mississippi | I will be picking up the vacuum advance Monday. today, I replaced the headlight bulbs and took out the radio and gave it a thorough cleaning. I found a local upholstery shop that will reupholster the front seat for $150. all they will be doing is replacing the old rubber underneath the cover and fixing some of the seams of poped loose. I should have the brake system finished up by mid next week. then shortly thereafter, the car will be painted.

Location: McComb, Mississippi | Here's the history...
The car came from Berkeley, CA. The Lowell family lived there, and the father Mr. Lowell (whom I met as a very elderly man when I bought the car) worked at the local Dodge dealership I believe as a mechanic. They had previously had a 1959 Dodge and traded it in for a new factory built-to-order 1961 Dodge Polara. I am told that when Mrs. Lowell took a test drive in a similar car, she stepped on the brakes (power) and came screeching to a halt - and insisted the new family car being ordered not have power brakes. Not sure why the heavy duty - extra leaf - rear springs were ordered. Maybe because Mr. Lowell was familiar with the large Chrysler Corp. cars of that era and knew they could develop sagging leaf springs (even though the 61 had a much lighter Unibody).
So this was the family car for many years. They went on to purchase other cars but this stayed in the family. They had a son named Rich, who was about 12 when the Polara was ordered (I saw a b&w pic of the car and him at that age). Rich really loved the car. Fast forward to many years later, the car had put on over 100K miles, and Rich was now away in college in No. Cal near Redding. He took over ownership of the old family car, brought it to college (his brother lived nearby). Over the next few years, Rich took auto shop courses and brought the car there as his student shop project. In one course he completely rebuilt the engine. In another course he completely rebuilt the transmission. And in an auto body course the car got its first paint job (pre-urethane enamel, still the old school enamels which didn't hold up well). All of this was under the guidance of expert instructors - with good results. I have seen pics of when Rich had the car really stripped out at his brother's ranch and was in the middle of the restorations.
Now fast forward to the late 1980's. I saw an ad for this and went to look at it. Rich was selling it, it was now being stored at his parent's family house in Berkeley, and they were now in failing elderly health. Rich was living in the high desert near Nevada and did not have much contact with the car, he wanted to give it a new home.
Enter me. My history with 1961 Dodge Polara's was strong. I spent the summer of 1961 at my sister's house near the beach on Long Island NY, and parked right alongside her front yard in the driveway of the summer rental house next door was a gorgeous new Marline Blue Polara 4 dr hardtop with the giant bubble back window. Everyday I saw that side profile and I just loved that car, it was so new too. After the summer the renters were gone, the car was gone - new car styles replaced the Forward Look era cars - - -
So I bought Rich's car and I really liked it, it drove like new. But many different turns of events in my life made it so that the car ended up in long term storage situations - first in a bard on a ranch in No. Cal. (where the paint job and upholstery stayed nice) then stored for several years outside in Riverside CA where the car really went downhill in the sun and smog (which I think ate the paint away, very common problem in smoggy L.A. area). The car hadn't been started or driven in many years, so I had it towed back here to S.F., CA. It stayed outside for several more years, but I always kept layers of water & sun proof car covers on it. But the heavy fog of S.F. started taking it's toll.
I never got the car started, because when the car was in storage in Riverside someone took the gas tank cap off and the gas in the tank evaporated and turned to a kerosene like varnish. I did get the engine running with the rubber fuel line dropped into a spare-gas can. But other events -including loss of that outdoor storage and the prohibitive cost of garage rent here in SF - so I came to some trading arrangements with John at Big M with the promise that the car not be parted out but sold to someone who would bring it back to life.
thanx so much for what you are doing to the car -what I never was able to get to -
Paul
p.s I have been in touch with Rich all these years. He has since gone back to motorcycle riding and travels all over the world now with friends. I get a Christmas card from every year detailing his world travels. He will be very heartened that the Polara has a new life, we shall send him some pics ! |

That is the Astrophonic radio, there, but that is the instructions for all radios' tuning adjustments.

Location: bishop, ca | Another restoration trick is to remove the OEM cover from the voltage regulator and to install it over the guts of a modern/
new V.R. .....assuming that OEM style V.R.'s are not 'currently' being re-popped.
This winter, or as soon as possible, whichever comes first, you should get the master cylinder properly
overhauled...in the meanwhile you can easily and regularly check on its (fresh-) fluid level.

Location: Victoria, BC, on Vancouver Island, Canada | What size are your tires? Off the shelf 14" radials are the hardest to find in a decent overall diameter compared to the original 800 x 14 bias. When I bought my Saratoga it had P-215-75R14 tires on it that were way undersized, so I ended up getting 15" wire wheels and mounting P235-75R15 wide whites on it, which are about the same overall diameter as it's original 850 x 14 bias tires. |

Location: McComb, Mississippi | today, I finished up the brakes. I took the car on its first on road journey in years. I did not take the car too far from home, but the car does ride very smooth and quiet. There is no pull when I apply the brakes. The car stop straight as an arrow. The speedometer was making a lot of noise though. I just lubed up the cable and the speedometer head and the noise is gone.

Anyone have an idea what can cause the suspension squeak when turning to the right? If it squeeks when the front end is moving up and down, I would think it is a rubber bushing in your A frame, or possibly sway bar if so equipped.................MO |

Location: McComb, Mississippi | I pretty much have nothing to do today, I thought I would share my plans for this car. I want the car to be a dependable daily driver. The engine and transmission have been rebuilt so I do not foresee any problems there. since the back seat is in such nice shape, I am going to leave it alone. I am going to get the padding underneath the seat cover on the front seat replaced. I am going to get the front seat cover repaired using fabric from SMS. I'm going to get the headliner replaced. I'm going to paint the car the original color using acrylic enamel. I am going to use this car like it was meant to be used, as a CAR.
also waxed the dashboard today.

Location: Arizona | Not sure exactly what you mean by "padding" on the front seat but if you are talking about just some of the "Stuffing and other stuff" rather then ALL the stuffing and other soft materials I would reccommend that as long as you are going to have the seat worked on you replace ALL the stuffing, foam, whatever. That old stuff is part of what makes that stinky old car smell and it won't cost much more to get rid of it all then to just replace the top layer. ANother word of advice I would offer is tell the upholsterer that you don't want to make the seat cushion wind up thicker. The guy who did mine really stuff the foam in it and now I practically hit the ceiling. |

Location: McComb, Mississippi | today was semi productive. There are only two dents on the whole car. I started trying to pop out the dent on the passenger side quarter panel using a propane torch. It pulled most of the dent out, but not all. I am awaiting further advice from group members as to what action I should take next. I do not want to glob down body filler on the car. I do understand that It may require a skim coat over the affected area. I just want the job to be as professional as possible.

Saw a Porch, a few decades ago, that was stripped for a re-paint; it was 'covered' by skim coats, to correct the OEM defects
in the body stampings.
Once it's painted, and unless it is a 'flaky' Bondo Sculpture, ain't nobody gonna know what lies under all that pretty color (...which
is a major concern with all those newly-'pretty'-painted cars on the 'Pay, and even on Spec-restos, at real auctions).

Location: Victoria, BC, on Vancouver Island, Canada | Your back seat looks fantastic! This exact same upholstery was used on Canadian built 1961 Chrysler Windsors, FL member Ray Bohn has this same color in his 1961 Windsor.
A little skim coat of bondo is quite normal in body work, to repair minor imperfections and as Neil mentioned stripping original paint of a car can reveal factory applications of skim coat bondo. When it's been built up thick to cover major areas of bad body work or rust, then it becomes an issue. |

LOL...this is NOT my car's interior, but another guy's (from the 90's) CRL, where my local shop
was going to custom install new upholstery on portions of his seats and then the shop installed clear plastic
covers over the seats, to protect them.
I had his seats cleaned before they went off to the upholstery shop.

Location: McComb, Mississippi | I have spent the entire day sending down the car. I have been using a DA sander with 320 grit paper. I will be using primer on the areas that are bare . Then, the whole car will be shot with sealer. then it will be top coated with blue acrylic enamel.

Location: McComb, Mississippi | More sanding today. All rough spots I have completely sanded down with 80 grit. The rest I have hit with
320. Filling minor dings and imperfections with evercoat body filler. Getting closer to paint. Painting jambs, inner fenders, and firewall first. |

from what I gather, you cannot wet sand or polish metallic paint. I am not sure about that, but if you really wanted more shine and smooth-ness, you could give a couple of clear coats and wet sand - polish that. Looks real good to me as is.......................................MO |

It's metallic? Looks like normal paint from this distance... Looking at the pictures it seems to have more of a gloss appearance to the paint... http://oldcarbrochures.com/static/NA/Dodge/1961_Dodge/1961_Dodge_Da... not sure why I just have a feeling that it looks kinda "murky" maybe I'm just used to seeing a near mirror reflection in higher quality paint? |

Hey Kelli. Lets see your car with that mirror shine. LOL C.B. I have a T shirt given to me by friends who ragged on me for several days. Bright red with giant yellow letters that says " DON"T LET THE bas***dS GET YOU DOWN. Maybe I should send that to you! Everyone has their own opinions and one of my un-popular ones is--I don't give a hoot for " high quality" paint that has a mirror shine--it has no "character"--looks fake...............................MO |

a 1961 Polara. They really are Mother Mopar's pinnacle "WTF ?" icon.
My brother keeps a photo of his Polara on the service counter where he works. In ten years, not
a single customer has guessed what it is ! When they ask, he says "I was hoping you could tell ME !"
One more reason I love these unusual old dogs.

Agree also,
I love seeing people work on their own cars themselves as much as possible and like has already been said, using whatever resources you can find. I have great respect for those working with whatever knowledge they have at the time.
Getting in and learning how to do something that had previously been outside of someones comfort zone is something to be admired in my eyes.
Nice car too, I like the 61 Dodge fronts especially, kinda look sad .....................

The push buttons have felt inserts between the buttons and where they come through the holes in the dash to keep them from rattling Yours are probably rotted out. Gary Goers has replacements. |

Location: McComb, Mississippi | the car had a problem with all of the gauges reading incorrectly. I discovered it was the built in voltage regulator in the fuel gauge. I replaced the gauge and I now have correct gauges, except for the temperature gauge. The temperature sending unit is bad so I have one on order. The next good weather weekend, I will be replacing the rear axle bearings and seals. Then comes the new headliner. |

Location: Heaven Above (Formerly Oklahoma City,OK) | Christian, if you do want the paint to have more "shine", and if it is an enamel base paint, give it 4-5 months to "cure" and then it can be wet sanded with 800 or 1000 grit, and it can then be polished with a very fine rubbing compound. Of course that presumes that you put enough paint on it. Other wise, your looking at wet sanding it with320 to 400 grit and throwing 4 or 5 coats of clear on it. Then do the 1000 grit and rubbing compound tricks. Make it shine like a baby's butt. |

Installed the switch and the defroster still wasnt working right. I checked all the vacuum actuators and they all worked fine. I finally realized that someone had reversed the vacuum hoses for the defroster door and the shut off door. Swapped them back and now the heater works great on all settings. |

I am not trying to be mean at all here especially if its your first time painting a car, but you could see the orange peel on this car from google earth. Id get fired for that.
And if you painted it a metallic single stage enamel FORGET about trying to buff it out. It will be a waste of time. Blue metallic single stage will turn blotchy if you wet sand and buff it. Even just buffing it will make it worse you will tip all the metal flake over.
I am not trying to be a dick but sand her down and spary her in base clear or at the very least urethane.

Location: bishop, ca | Hey, CB; you know I'm on your side.
Calvin supplied some valuable information, about not trying to buff out single-stage metallic enamel paint.
Didn't know about that, but it makes sense.
If you have not, yet, got your wheels aligned, here's a screen shot from my ride's radial tire alignment specs,
from 2005.
My shop's computer parameters referenced OEM bias ply tires specifications, and not radial tire specs..
Old time wheel alignments used to reflect an abundance of considerably-humped roadways, and stiff bias ply sidewalls, which tend
to allow tread corners to lift, upon cornering, instead of having the treads lie flat against the pavement, like radial tires do permit.
The OEM bias ply specs on Camber adjustments is interesting, which call for positive on the left and negative on
the right, so that the tires would lean into the (now, non-existent) humped/swaled roadways.
Radial tires do not need negative caster to maintain a flat tread against (flat) pavement cornering.
However, most cars are driven around-town, and studies have shown that most turns are toward the
left (go ask your shop), which tends to wear the INSIDE edge of the (left) 'inside' tire.
My shop installed a tad more positive Camber on the left tire, so as to preserve some of the inside edge of the left tire.
(most-) All tires need some Toe-in, because, at highway speeds the suspension dynamics tends to pull the wheel
apart, so, if they start out slightly pigeon-toed, they will straighten out and fly right (an old expression) at speed.
My shop said that the subject .02 Toe-in on the right side should have been .04, but that the difference between the two sides
was not critical to the car's performance..

the car has had a really low pitched hum coming from the rear end ever since I purchased the car. it is extremely noticeable at speeds above 60 miles an hour. Today, I replaced the rear axle bearings, races, and seals. I found the problem on the drivers side race. I had to use a good bit of heat to free the eroded race. Check out how bad this race is. I replaced all of the parts and now the car goes down the road quiet at all speeds.

Location: So. Cal | Having a quiet ride after driving it with a howl is a sweet feeling. I put a new 8" Ford axle that Currie shortened for me into my '69 Corona. They must have used really cheap crap Chinese bearings in the thing. It always made noise. I thought it was because of the pinion angle, driveshaft or something else; but no matter how I played with it, I couldn't get rid of the noise. So I just lived with it until 30k miles later I start dropping balls out on the freeway. I replaced the bearings with good American stuff and suddenly it is quiet like it should be. |

Second, the wrong springs were installed! The old springs were nearly half an inch too short and were slightly too big in diameter. All is put back together and I will fire her up first thing in the morning.

Location: McComb, Mississippi | No, the small springs are just to keep the Valve from dropping if the valve spring should break. The car is back together now. I disassembled and lubed the hood hinges and latch, installed a new engine to body ground wire and reset the points using a diagnostic analyzer from the mid seventies. I set the timing and carb and all is well now. It runs so much stronger with new springs. Next week I will adjust the transmission linkage and the backlash on the power steering gearbox. |

One nice feature on it, is that the water pump flange is already notched out; on the JAG XJ clutch, you've got to cut your own
notches into its bolt-holes.
No big deal, but labor saved is labor saved.

|
very cool! u so remind me of that kid in the 'the steven king movie" Christine , he was also always fixing his 58 and look what all his hard work turned out keep at it , id wait on the body and paint and focus on pulling that engine and replace all the gaskets and and detail it and also that engine bay , best part of any old car is a clean and painted engine/bay good luck
