Location: Auckland, New Zealand. | Hi all.
When I restored my 57 Fury I installed new grease caps on the front brake drums.
Recently I found that I was constantly needing to tighten up the wheel bearing/it was always coming loose.
Upon inspection I found that the wheel bearing and associated grease seemed to have a lot of metal filings in it, obviously wearing away at the bearing.
Upon inspection of the grease cap I could see where it was coming from. The inside of the grease cap showed evidence of rotary wear on the inside end of the cap, where the end of the stub axle had been grinding the inside of the grease cap as the drum goes round, obviously the wrong size grease cap/too short.
Does anybody have a supplier for the longer correct size grease caps to suit 57 Plymouth?

Location: Auckland, New Zealand. | That sounds awesome Richard, I only need 2.
Can you give me the measurements to be sure that they will work? O/D of the round part that slips inside the drum, and depth from the base of the collar to the end, internal.
Cheers!
Glenn.

I bought a bag of caps on eBay a long time ago that work good on my 56 Plymouths. They look to be OEM. You can have a pair for the cost of shipping to NZ. |

Location: Auckland, New Zealand. | No it's just that I am unsure if 56 Plymouth is the same grease cap as 57 Plymouth. 57 was a big model year change. Never mind, let me know what the postage will be. Can I pay you with Paypal? Don't forget to add a little on for the Paypal commission charge. I don't want you to be out of pocket.
Cheers,
Glenn. |

Looking a Gift Horse in the mouth? You know how much time can be wasted by not getting parts that will fit? Especially oversea's. Time that could be spent looking eleswhere. When I go to a parts place several miles from home, I sometimes make the sales person upset because I take the part out of the box and inspect it before paying. MANY times I have been glad to have that habit. ....................................MO |

| OK, when I open up a Parts Place and sell grease caps for money, I won't be surprised by ingratitude. Anyway, offer withdrawn. |

I certainly did not mean to offend, and I could really use those grease caps, if you would reconsider.

It shows up as a quote in Fury's post, but does not show up on my PC as a post. Guess the gift horse comment isn't quite so rude after all. .........................MO |

Yes I thought that strange too. I can only guess that Richard deleted his post because he retracted his offer.
For the life of me I cannot see what I said to offend him, I just want to save everyone the hassle of shipping incorrect parts internationally, after all, it is the fact that I have incorrect parts now that is my reason for wanting to find the correct parts, and I wouldn't have a clue if 56 and 57 Plymouth grease caps are the same or not, I don't know anybody around here who has a 56 Plymouth I can look at..
These incorrect parts, if installed and left uninspected as they grind away at the bearings, could eventually cause a complete failure of the wheel bearings and subsequent possible carnage.
I guess I'm still looking...
Glenn.

Glenn, yes I understood completely your situation. Sorry to have made one of your sources to take offense. Hope you soon find the bearing caps you need................MO

Location: Auckland, New Zealand. | Big thanks to Rolland for sorting me out with a couple of grease caps.
Pictures attached of one of the nice newish correct ones from Rolland, a rusty correct one from a local parts car, and the shorter after market cap I had on the car.
Looking at the correct caps against the caps I had on the car it is little wonder they were being scored by the end of the stub axle and falling off into the wheelcover-the correct ones are much taller. I can't remember where I got these incorrect caps from, maybe Ebay, but something to look out for.
Glenn.

Location: Lower Mainland BC | Dredging up this old thread after a search. I discovered the other day that Dorman makes new dust/grease caps. However, I just don't know what size my 56 Dodge would need.
https://www.dormanproducts.com/c-771-wheel-hub-dust-caps.aspx
Perhaps this 1 and 13/16" 13996?
Dust Cap 1-13/16 Dia. | 13996 | 3/4 Top
OR ???

| Ok this is an older thread I see. A micrometer would solve your problem. I am wondering how on earth the hub can be coming loose. Does your car have tappered cups and cones or the roller balls? If the worng seal is used then it can cause the hub to sit out where it should not be not allowing proper seating on the spindle. It does have the washer, crown washer w/cotter pin and finaly nut does it not or is something missing? Also if not properly seated at install the hub may be a "false" seating. The dust cap fits inside the hub and it's closest friend is the race, which should never turn and not the bearing housing. |
