| Hey guys, I recently acquired a second 1959 Dodge 2 dr H/top, this one is a Coronet. I'm looking once again for some assistance to decipher the vehicle codes. I believe this car is an American build, where as my Custom Royal is Canadian built. Here goes; SCHED 0713, NO 5011, MODEL MD2L, BT 312, PT XX1, TR 149. The series of letters/numbers across the top of the plate READ; SG EW M1 M2 M3 34 M5 M6 M7 M8 M9. The door pillar plate reads; Vehicle No. M314, 106748. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

The series/letters across the top are for the options on the car. This is a Los Angeles body tag and they were a little different from the rest.
But, for the other stuff :
SCHED NO = 0713 5011 - where 0713 is the scheduled build date, July 13, 1959. I believe the "5" is for Dodge which means this one is the 11th Dodge planned for production on July 13, 1959.
MODEL MD2L -
M - 1959
D - Dodge
2 - 326-cid V8
L - Coronet
BT 312 - Body Type -
3 - Dodge
1 - Coronet V8
2 - 2-dr hardtop
PT XX1 - Paint -
X - Roof colour - Pearl White
X - Body colour - Pearl White
1 - Paint style - Monochromatic
TR 149 - Interior Trim -
???
Vehicle Number - M314106748 -
M - Model year - 1959
3 - Car Line - Dodge
1 - Series - Coronet V8
4 - Assembly plant - Los Angeles
106748 - Sequential production number, starts at 100001 for each prefix.
This car was the 6,748th M31 built at 4.
About 16,200 1959 Dodges of all series and body styles were built at Los Angeles.

Location: bishop, ca | Trim code 149 is red & black Coronet (6 or V/8).
Have you checked up/behind the glove box to see if the Broadcast Sheet is (still) masking-taped there?
Because it was built in L.A., the Paint/Trim data plate will not show much of its optional equipment on it;
yours apparently shows no such options listings.
You can buy a copy of its IBM Build card from the Chrysler Historical Society (see the Sticky messages at the top
of this mressage board) and I can help you decypher its build-information, when you receive it.

| Is there any way to determine if this car has the Powerflite or Torqueflite transmission. Can this be determined from the data tag
or are there markings on the transmission itself? Will a 2 sp Powerflite bolt up to a 383 cu in engine?
Any info would be appreciated. | |

How many buttons on the transmission gear selector?
Powerflite was a 2-speed box and thus L and D buttons along with N and R.
Torqueflite was a 3-speed box and had 1, 2 and D.
Sales code for Powerflite was 292 and Torqueflite was 293.
Powerflite was optional on all Coronet 6 & V8 models and standard on Royal models. Torqueflite was optional on all Coronet V8 and Royal models and standard on Custom Royal and Custom Sierra models as well all D500 engines. Which means all 383 V8 engines came with Torqueflite.

| Thanks Bill, makes sense, just needed confirmation. I have someone interested in purchasing the car and they were asking if a 383 would bolt up to the existing transmission. Didn't want to pass along wrong information.
Thanks again. | |
