i've shared a few pics from time to time in different posts, but thought i should start a thread just for my project. for those who dont know, i've had this belvedere since 1994. it's been through a couple different stages, got quite a bit of attention when i had it out, but i got a bit jaded/ decided that i needed to redo the car and hasn't moved under its own power since 1998. bigger and better ideas take a long time to finish!

here's what the car looked like the last time i drove it. i'll post more pics of current progress too.

That's unreal what's the plan, salt flats or quarter mile? Love to see and read more about this, (and see it finished!).

Will make an awesome comparison photo next to one of your standard 61 Plymouths.

ill take it to the dragstrip a few times, but we are building it fairly tame so that i should be able to drive it pretty much everywhere. i'm fairly confident that it will run somewhere in the mid to low 10's and be able to incinerate the tires at 60 mph!

I really like the shape this is taking! While it's not something I would do, I am really impressed at how well even the very extreme modifications seem to be in harmony with the original flavor of the car. Very well thought out. I look forward to seeing the progress continue!

That's a cruel look and I like it. Somewhat puzzled for the hood work though - with all that polishing - wouldn't you like to be able to close the hood and "save it" instead of leaving it for the ambient to dig in on it?

As for how the car was before in "tom 005.JPG" I really love that stance - that is a badass car ready to rock n' roll

Thanks for the nice words! The hood situation has been a thorn in my side! The car has air bags, and when deflated/ parked the frame touches the ground. I raised the engine/ tranny in the chassis to prevent damage or crushed parts.....so the hood would never cover the engine. When the cold side plumbing and carbs & hats etc. are on, it sticks about 9" above the hood. I wasn't able to figure out a hood scoop that wouldn't clash with the lines of the car. This is a compromise. I'm sort of a neat freak and don't really mind polishing anyway!
I've got an idea for a new hood that will mimic the dash pod, but that will involve me figuring out how to play with fiberglass ... Maybe next year.

So really the outer skin is all thats still 61 plymouth?

I am really interested in the floor/chassis stuff, was it all custom built or was the chassis from something or some sort of "off the shelf" one and you build the floor to match?

As I said before, I really like this one

you are correct. I back halved the car first in 1996-97 with a 4 link rear frame kit from art morrison. the front of the car, front suspension and floors forward of the 4 link were stock at that time. when I decided change it up some more, we cut everything between the rockers, firewall, floor, etc. out and had art morrison make the front frame for me. it's one of their airspring frames w/ rack & pinion, tubular arms, air ride etc. I sent them a drawing of what I wanted w/ measurements and they fabbed it up & shipped it to me. it's all mandrel bent 2x4 tubing. once it was welded in, the cage was added. the floors and tunnel are sheetmetal that we just made fit as needed.

Of the bazillion stunning things about this car, I feel like a complete nimrod asking about this one, but it's been bugging me for my own '61 project (NOTHING on this level or close to it)......how did you do the chrome "piping" on those door panels? The original stuff gets destroyed separating it from the vinyl, and I haven't been able to find anyone making something that could be used as a substitute due to the need for it to be bent into curve rather than just a straight line.

The attention to detail on display here, like that, is astonishing. Rare is the wild custom that retains and emphasizes so much of what was cool about the car to begin with. Can't wait to see that dash pod inspired hood design. This belongs on magazine covers.

thanks for the positive remarks! as for the door panel chrome trim, the lower pc I think is an old pc of stainless from a 64 dodge. the upper is just self adhesive flexible trim from the local auto parts store. the padding on the door panel was left out where the chrome pc needed to go, then once covered with the material, it was just bent to shape & stuck in place. it seems to be holding fine, and if it fails or the glue lets go we will have to make something out of stainless and maybe weld threaded stock onto it so it can be fastened.
this was the easier route to take for now. I hope it stays!

we got the engine running on the test stand, broke the cam in, with a single carb & manifold. then ran it with the long rams & 2 carbs. I didn't want to waste a lot of time @ the dyno doing what we could at home for free. next is dyno time with turbos & all plumbing installed.
it seems to run pretty good for a low compression mild combeo.

wiring the car has begun, things have been figured out for stereo stuff as well.. you gotta have tunes ya know!
I was the one who bought the "mystery 61 Plymouth round sparkle wheel" on ebay. it was a much more affordable option for now. when more time and money allow, i'll have my aero wheel restored.
I sorted thru all my stainless trim, polished it up & began fitting it all.

Exceptional!!! Was that the GSTA show? I wasn't able to go this year. Are you bringing it to Mopars In The Park? It definitely should take first place in Pro- Street.

That was at the Duluth Motorhead Maddness show.
Yes, we will be at Mopars in the park.
I probably won't enter it in the show though. I can't stand being roped into a spot all day long ( outdoor shows).

Ohh noooooo, the exhaust is all wrong, theyre not the correct air filters, you forgot the inner guards and the hood and how are you going to fit wheel covers to those wheels? Best take those tires off and get a set of wide whites

Fantastic, I wish I had your skill to be able to create something as good as that

Well done

I would have to imagine that when it starts spooling up, all of the energy your gonna use to smile will be used to keep you from evacuating your bowls....a least until you reach your disired cruising speed. ????
Then do it all over again.
