I am sorry if this was posted before. Yesterday my son emailed me the attached picture, from the TV show "American Pickers". I don't know anything more than that (like if it was a new show, an old one, or even if he actually watched it or found the picture...). The show is about 2 guys who travel the country, looking for bargains in backyards and barns, then buy them if they can, and re-sell for a profit. Here's what they apparently found -- taillight towers from a 1957 DeSoto!

We get that show here as well

I like watching it, some of the stuff they turn up is pretty amazing

It must be hard to try and value everything you see on the spot when you go crawling through someones junk pile

I will say that some of their valuations surprise me (I wouldnt pay that much for that piece of crap), but other things, you think, they scored with that.

It would be cool to follow something they bought from found to re purposed, just to see how it turned out

I remember when they got that 57 chev for they guys from Pawn Stars and they started the restoration on that with that American Restoration guy (yep, we get that one as well), I thought that was pretty pricey, never saw the finished product though

They thought it could have been custom. But they got the late 50s right. One of the few shows I was shouting at the screen.

YEAH..."American Pickers" and they didn't recognize American automotive icons...which DeSoto
tail lights CERTAINLY are!

I shout at the TV, too, as they try to cheat ("bargain") with sellers, only to brag, later, about how much
money they made on their dealings (after pleading poverty or denigrading the value of an object
in front of a seller)....who does not know or understand an object's market value.

Their 'clients' on the show apparently do not know how to bargain with them (as in: "Take it or leave it,
buddy; I'll sell this thing elsewhere"....is there anything ELSE, around here, that you would like to look at"?

...And THEN see what the Pickers have to counteroffer to them, on that item (since the Pickers
are, obviously, interested in that item).

The sellers are definitely at a disadvantage, based upon the urgency of the transaction,
the lure of receiving some easy spending money, and the lack of knowledge about an object's
fair market value...but, YES...nobody is forcing them to sell-out, to the Pickers...and the
sellers are always shown to be happy with receiving their money.

I wonder how they feel, after watching the show?

They have been around for a while, so I would think that most people would know that they will not get a retail price for their stuff

Thing is, if you have a lot of stuff that you want to get rid of, its sometimes easier to get people such as these to come in and take what they want, even if its at a reduced cost

Its the ones that have inherited an old barn full of junk that the pickers just take this or that that I dont get, if they want to off load it all to clear it out, I would be saying "you want one thing, you take the lot" and it must be worth x amount of dollars

Bit like the dodge stuff I bought, I only needed an engine, but I had to buy the lot to get it, now its up to me to sort the crap from the gold and hopefully recoup my investment

More crap than gold I think though, stuff thats good, but hard to sell, like who wants a used master cylinder or 2 barrel poly intake manifold?

You guys seems to forget that these Discovery shows are SCRIPTED 'shows'. All these fake shows have one thing in common; MONEY.
Pretty much any show, it's always about how much money has been socalled 'made' by the main character(s).
Personally I couldn't case less about that financial bull surrounding all that. Sickening.
I think it's just (false) entertainment for the majority of clueless couchpotatoes which are enprisoned in a marriage or something and never get out.

Wadda ya mean its fake and scripted

I'm shattered

I think on that American Restoration show, there has only been once (that I have seen) where someone thought that the cost to restore something was to much and took whatever it was away without getting it done

If you look closely at some of the stuff restored on that show, they take a little license on details sometimes, but as said above, its mindless entertainment and after a hard days work, mindless suits me fine

The thing(s) I like, on these fake shows....is how the camera crews initially appear INSIDE the residences/buildings....when the
actors, I mean: the celebrity hosts...FIRST encounter and greet the strangers at their doorsteps.

NObody ever acknowledges the presence of the camera crew and the sound engineers....who are swarming all
over their property "unexpectedly".

Sure.

I was told by someone locally who was visited by AP for a "pick" that the sprinter van they are seen riding around in is flown in to meet the guys, so there's no "driving around the country" and waiting for phone calls with leads from the black-haired chick...

i saw the taillite episode a couple of days ago. they claim to be car guys but didn't know what it is. not possible.

i can't make up my mind if i like em or not but they certainly raised an awareness about that "junk" in the backyard or attic that went to the scrapyard or into the bin for decades. sure its all about $$$ (you can't teach or learn good taste or a sense for the REAL thing) but there is nothing wrong with that.

what i like is that they also show old films (like that 60 fury serviced at a gas station) and give history lessons about items, companies, people, etc that are long forgotten. certainly interesting.
not sure what you all mean by "fake"? well, they probably build a story around it, but the places, hoarders and stuff are real and thats all what counts.

I never thought of them as car guys, bike, both pedal and motor, yes

Remember they bought that 40s plymouth that was only worth a grand or 2 and they paid something like 5 grand (all up) for it?

I like to think of myself as a car guy, but I know that I wouldnt have known what it was until I was more involved in mopars and especially US mopars

The other thing is, I dont think I could tell you every tail light of the Australian cars either and I am a car sparky, so I have probably looked at most of them, just without much interest

THEY claim to be car guys and had a hot rod build on an old chassis or body they found in a shed. wolf is allegedly a VW guy into 50s bugs/vans.
i "liked" the episode in which they found a couple of abandoned cars in some weird underground garage. one of em a 59 desoto which they, including the camera guy, completely disregarded! or the episodes in which they go nuts over some antique pottery or thunder mug and while they are drooling over it you can see some cool 50s cars in the background completely disregarded...

i don't know. i could google it but i don't. i don't know the difference between a 90 and a 91 cadillac either. but i got 100% here: http://www.forwardlook.net/forums/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=56263&...

i should have said vintage car guy. this show is all about 20s-50s or 60s. and they claim to be car guys. a 57/58 desoto taillight tower is recognizable as a 59 cadillac fin. no other decade created cars that are so easy to tell apart. desoto was famous for the 3 dotted taillights if you don't know them, you don't know desoto.

I'm a Dodge Boy, I wouldn't recognize a Desoto taillight either. But I could look it up if I have to. There are a lot of different Mopars out there. If you have a photographic memory, GOD bless you, I don't have one.

Catch ya later.
