| After an exhausting two days or driving (long story)..I acquired a really nice finished 361 rebuilt motor for my 1960 Matador that I don't even have yet!!!.LOL. Got it home and realized it was a '62 motor....only 6 bolts on the crank to mount the torque converter...I think I need an 8 bolt!...my question is...can I get a later aluminum Torqueflite to bolt up to it...and will it work with my 60 push buttons on the dash?..Need an expert to chime in! Will post some Picts soon of the car when I get it...the motor looks ready to go, minus carb and water pump! |

Location: Layton, Utah | You can use a 62 Trans. First year for the aluminum torque flite. It's the only year that will work for the conversion for the later 6 bolt crank B and RB engines. It has the push button cable and the e-brake drum on the rear. They are kind of tough to get but it's a real easy conversion. DeSoto lives !!! |

You will need a transmission out of a 1962 Dodge 880 or Chrysler. The 1962 Plymouth and Dart/Polara 500 use Bendix brakes and thus have the emergency brake on the rear wheels. Also, the P/D/P 500 transmission has the park sprag, which you do not need.

| No car yet....I think I got one of those slacker car brokers....no phone calls, no emails, no communication what so ever....they talk the talk...blah blah...oh sure, we can get it picked up in the next few days...then you pay them their "up front" fees and then they don't do s**t. Really beginning to hate shipping these old cars...have not had good luck the past few times....getting really annoying....it's been about three weeks so far with no phone calls, no anything from this so called broker....the guy told me that he has drivers that do that route every day.....Really?...cause my car is just sitting there collecting dust.
So NO, I don't have it yet...LOL |

A fellow member on this site bought a car from me a year ago last spring, and the broker charged him money up front, and never did come to pick up the car. The gentleman had to wait until Leo could come and do the transport. And the company never refunded him the money up front.

| The search is the funnest part of the hobby, right?...Always looking for the next project...I always try to search for the next winter's project a year ahead of time!...This Matador needs almost the exact sheetmetal replacement/work that the 60 Adventurer needed., so this time around., should go a little quicker...basically the same car...just rebodied!
I like the rarer, harder to find cars....you might as well restore one of those then the more numerous ones cause you spend the same amount of time on them...maybe a little more on parts and original purchase price, but in the end, it's all worth it!...I am pretty sure I won't see a '59 Sport Fury, '60 Adventurer or '60 Matador at any of the car shows I got to here in Sacramento!
I am enjoying the education/restoration process on all these late 50s/early 60s Forward Look cars....just love 'em! |

| Well., was gonna wait until the Desoto is done., but couldn't resist to start working on the Matador., pulled out the lower rock guard out of the pile of parts and went to work on it today., dollied it back and forth for about five hours today to get it back to it's original shape....Had to cut off all the bolts and trim clips cause they were pretty much rust-cemented to the part....the upper guard is next on the list. This part still needs another couple hours to get it really close before going to the sandblaster.

| Not completely solid!...LOL., but floors are in pretty darn good shape...a few small rust throughs., but all in all solid car...that may change once I get the car blasted!!!!..ya never know. Besides that., needs a trunk floor pan, one trunk drop off and the bottom two inches on one quarter....which is weird cause the other one is solid as could be!...must have stopped up the drain plug area with a towel or something years ago and it rusted out...who knows.
I did get the rest of the interior taken apart., dash taken out and all apart., seats out etc today...just a few pcs left to take out.

| Got the rest of the interior/windows/wiring all out today.
Still have to drop the gas tank, pull motor/trans, take off rear bumper, pull off the doors, fenders, trunk, inner fender panels, hood and take out front windshield.
The back glass is staying in...I don't wanna risk pulling it and damaging it....luckily all the surrounding areas around the windows look like new...not sure how., but no rot at all! Got lucky I guess.
Then off to get stripped/epoxy primed.

| I've been watching this car too...I think maybe about three years ago it was for sale and I missed it., ever since, been scouring then internet for one....then this one went back up on FL about 6 months ago or so...so I snagged it...been wanting to do a Matador..and man..they are really hard to find...basically the same car as my 60 Adventurer, just different sheetmetal!...I have a rotisserie it will be going on this winter to strip the undercoating off the bottom....the rotisserie worked well for my 60 Desoto last winter (barely fit in my garage while up on it's side)...I cleaned out another 4 feet of junk at the far end of the garage to get these biggins into the garage...two of them fit in nicely now!..lol
Been looking for parts, I have the motor rebuilt already done to go in, it's a 62 motor 361 out of a Chrysler....so being a 6 bolt, I had to find one of those hard to find torqueflite trans , Big M had one....This original motor I have for it is pretty toasty looking...but I do have it and the original trans that will get a makeover one day. Easy to swap later...(relatively speaking).
Will post picts when I have some new stuff done...It needs a trunk floor and a lower pass rear quarter...have the trunk floor cut out and I have located an original rust free donor car here close to my house...so just gotta see how much to get those original sheetmetal pcs....I don't like the aftermarket trunk floor...the contour lines are not even close, metal is thinner....I put one in my '60 Desoto and it didn't have positions for the crossmembers for the gas tank...so had to do some mods to get it to work...turned out great though., but would rather put in original sheet metal if possible.
I already have a line of people that want it when it's done., but I think I am gonna hold on to this one!!!!

| Yeah., restoring three of these at the same time is not an easy task, specially with my old bones and limited budget....BUT., they WILL get done....this one is bringing up the rear...the 60 Desoto is ready for paint now., but too cold to paint at the moment...and the '59 Sport Fury.,...still waiting on my upholstery (going on two years this past summer!...yeah really., two years!)....I am suppose to get my back seat this weekend....YEAH RIGHT!, The Matador is probably one of the coolest, rarest, (least seen on the road for sure) and odd-ballest in this era., so wanna do a good job on it!...so gonna take my time. Thanks for the encouragement...probably won't be getting back on it 'till the beginning of 2016...and maybe by then, just maybe, I will have my back seat for my

I am sure I could do the upholstery if I took my time....maybe on this Matador I will...LOL

| Sorry Mr. Bob...unfortunately I have been working on "other" people's cars, painting a '64 Falcon, then another neighbor has an all original one owner '68 Mustang fastback I have to get back on the road for her...who know what it needs., probably new gas tank, all new brakes, the engine?....hasn't run in a loooooooong time., so after I get those two cars buttoned up, summer will be here and I need to paint the '60 Desoto....THEN., and maybe THEN., I may get back on it. I have a few more projects further along then the Dodge., so it may have to wait a bit.
And those are the updates my friend!
I did find a few parts I needed., was missing one small trim piece for the door and needed one "matador" script for the front fender., so luckily found them both a couple days ago...not easy to find those emblems. |
|
|
|
Location: North Australia | Guy, please re-prioritise! I want to see that Matador come together so bad! (I was just wondering about this car last week).
Unreal you are doing 3 cars simultaneously. You must be taking some good notes! Good luck Mate, keep the pics coming.

I also have a rebuilt motor already., so that is a big cha ching done.

| Well folks, not much moving on the Matador., this winter took on some "other people's" projects and they are taking longer then usual. (always the case!)., trying to finish up a '64 Falcon for a neighbor and a 68 Mustang fastback for another!....so unfortunately., the Matador has taken a back seat for a bit...hopefully back on it soon. I still need to finish painting my 60 Desoto 2Dr HT also, but didn't like how the final wetsand came out before paint...so more primer and blocking to be done...so may be a while before I get back on the Matador...
Those are the updates and I am sticking to it!...Stopped by John's the other day to pick up some parts for the Matador...(he's a busy man!), always nice to see the John-ster!
Happy Motoring! Be Safe!
