Location: Southern Sweden - Sturkö island | I was not happy with all the space that the spare tire took up in the trunk - after many roadtrips across Sweden, I finally decided to remove the spare tire. Then I found out that I had stored a lot of things behind the spare Wheel as well as in and under it.
For to solve this I made a small trunk-bunk that is installed without any holes or changes ton the car.
#1 Picture - the trunk-bunk is tailor-made out of plywood and lined with gray thin felt.
#2 Picture - to install it, push rearwards with the trunk-bunk slightly inclined.
#3 Picture - pull forward until the rear stop washer engages with the support pillar.
#4 Picture - engage the hinge lock in the reinforcement bracket.
#5 Picture - Trunk-bunk installed and ready to be filled up with the bare necessities of roadtrips.
The 2-kilo CO² fire extinguiser is also new and it will put out fires without destroying the car.

Location: So. Cal | So now you're ready for your car to spontaneously combust, the coil to go bad, the radiator hose to fail etc... but no solution for a simple flat tire? I don't like carrying around the extra tire either, but I have had a number of incidences that required one. I ALWAYS have these issues on a late night, holiday or Sunday when everything is closed so that without a spare to get you going again, you end up looking pretty dumb for not being prepared with one. I really like what you have done. Makes it much better looking & better organized than to have that stuff scattered loosely in the trunk. But I just don't think it is a good idea to go without a spare tire. You are more likely to use one than you are a fire extinguisher. I have never used a fire extinguisher, but I have used a spare tire at least 10 times in my life.
If you would like to save space and weight, try getting a spare tire from a late model Ford or Dodge van with the same 114.3mm bolt pattern. Those space savers won't look quite right, but will save you weight and space, and will be a better solution on the side of the road than nothing. |

Location: Southern Sweden - Sturkö island | Thanks' for you comment Nathan - I have 3 "normal" cars as well and our C300 Town & Country doesn't even have space for a spare tire.
I'm aware that this is a risk, but it's a calculated risk - I didn't had use for spare tires in non of my cars for many, many years.
Knowing Murphy, now that I have removed my spare tire in my "real" car - I'll probably will get a flat next to immedeately |

Location: Southern Sweden - Sturkö island | The tire repair spray foam bottles makes a mess indeed and the gunk should be removed at the earlist possible time. The costs for this is roundabout SEK 1000 - 1500 (USD 118 - 177) here in Sweden.
I hear that there's another product, some kind of slime that can be left inside the tires always and makes like a preventive care for flat tires caused by punctures - but I have no feedback on this. |

Location: Netherlands | I've never seen so much clean and unused stuff in the trunk of a car...
In my daily '73 Dart I've got a lightweight Centerline dragrace frontrunner wheel that's about the height of your 'bunk' and maybe weighs just about 8 kg.
