Location: New Castle PA | Folks, I have a shop owner who contacted me. He wants to replace damaged threads (possibly both LH and RH) on a 1957 DeSoto. I've never done it, but I know that some of you have converted the tapered axle setup to a "more modern" style (where the drum just has holes instead of the attached studs). What "tricks" are involved? I'm assuming a press and not a big hammer, but any help would be appreciated. Also, is there a source for the replacement studs? THANK YOU ALL.

The lug studs are swedged into the drum/hub, simply pressing or driving them out can enlarge the hole in the hub so that new studs will be loose. The correct way to remove them is to use a cutter to remove the swedging. Some automotive machine shops will have the swedge cutting tool or they're available from Goodson.

Pic below shows studs before (right) and after (left) swedging.

Location: New Castle PA | Thank you. I obviously meant LUG, not LOG. Darn those fingers! Any source for the replacements? |

Location: So. Cal | There are 2 studs listed on Dorman. 610-036 (not serrated) and 610-039 (serrated). I suspect that the serrated 039 is what you need, but I am not certain. |

Location: New Castle PA | Thanks. I did check RockAuto, and didn't see DeSoto listed (as you said). Should have thought to check Dodge or maybe Chrysler. All I see are RH threads, though. I'm going to suggest the fellow who needs them go directly to Dorman and see what they say. Most likely, I think, they'd have them if anyone. You guys are the best... |

If finding the correct LH studs is a problem, just change to RH lugs and nuts. |

Location: So. Cal | I agree. If I don't have to mess with them, they stay as LH, but if I need to change them, they go to RH. Less trouble in the end. |
