Location: NorCal | I've noticed that a lot of Mopar 3-speed manual transmissions have a 3-digit model number like A-745, A-903, etc. Does the '57 V8 trans have such a designation?
And, does anybody know for sure if the '57 trans bellhousing bolt pattern is the same as any later 3-speeds such as the A-230 or A-390?

Location: Peoples Republic of Oregon | I get questions regarding similar swaps. It would be good to have some definition on the various units used from about 1950-1960.
Anyone out there with some photos they can offer? |

Location: Alaska | I can only share my personal experience. My 57 Fury was converted to a manual 3 sp. before I bought it and it used the 57-59 model used in the Plymouth and also the Dodge. It was a very weak trans. especially first gear and I broke several of them and just replaced them with other used units from the salvage yards. My 60 Plymouth had a 361 GC with a factory 3 speed and it was the Borg Warner T-85 which was used only a couple of years behind the largest engines (59-60), and then again in 62-64 behind the max wedges. IMHO it is the strongest 3 speed made in that time period, it had the long input shaft common to Dodge and Plymouth but had a different bolt pattern so would not bolt in as a direct interchange for the older trans. |
