Location: Ny | About a month ago I bought a 1957 Plymouth Sport Suburban from Tyler Martin here on the forum. The car has been bounced around a lot in its lifetime, and legend has it that it is a factory dual quad V800 car. Since bringing it home, I immediately requested the IBM information from FCA, and got to work on rebuilding the suspension and brakes so that I could drop a new motor in it (the one in it was seized) and drive it/haul my camper with it this summer. My IBM decode leaves a lot of questions to be answered, so any 57 V800 owners are welcome to message me here-- I'd love to compare notes and get a few more answers. As it is, I currently have a decode sheet (copied from information I found in the decode section on this site), but it is dated for October 31, 1956, and I need a later revision which should have additional information about ordering a V800 car (from what I've researched this option was made available mid-year). I'll update with some photos of my progress as well once I can hop onto the computer or iPad and photobucket everything (adding pictures via phone is difficult). |

Location: Ny | The original engine did not come with the car. It seems to have been removed quite some time ago. In its place was a seized 1960 318. I've already pulled the front clip off of the car, removed the engine, and stripped the firewall. The car was originally NAN which is a sand dune white body with dusty coral roof and color sweep. I plan to reverse the colors in the future, so I am prepping my firewall and painting it before I drop my new engine in it next month. I bought that rebuilt 301 that was for sale both here on the site and on eBay. We will pick it up in Florida while we are on vacation.
Here's some progress photos. After getting her into the shop, one of the first things I did was take some rubbing compound and polish the dead paint. Her patina brightened right up. Next I replaced the mealy left front fender that was starting to rot through the brow. In October, I purchased a rust free 57 Plymouth fender before even knowing I would be gettting this car. It's the same color (dusty coral), so I guess it was meant to be. I also purchased an NOS bumper wing (this car used to have them from the factory), for the left side at the same show. Once I was satisfied with how the fender matched, I pulled the front clip. With a little help from my boyfriend, the engine was pulled, and I got to work cleaning/degreasing her and prepping the frame and suspension for restoration.

May I ask why you didn't remove the transmission as well ... now is a great time to freshen it up or even if it was working good an external "reseal" is always a good idea along with a detail and paint....
The single digit "salute" in the engine lift pic is a nice touch...adds a bit of "atmosphere"....

I plan to remove the transmission, grunau. It'll get a complete overhaul. It would be silly to leave it as is behind a freshly rebuilt motor. The engine I removed had already been taken out by the orevuius owner. He merely set the motor in the bay for easier transport.
As for the salute, that's just Jeff being cute. I forgot it was even in the picture!

Location: Ny | This car has a vagabond history-- one that's carried the legend of the V800. I purchased the vehicles IBM card to separate fact from fiction, however FCA left a lot to be desired in their ability to decode the power package option that it has. I have yet to come across the later decode sheet that has the answer I am looking for-- the early sheet which I found under the VIN/PT decode section does not have the same information (there must have been a change made mid-year).
This car was built in LA on June 26, 1957. It was shipped to Healey Motor Company on July 8th. Since then it has moved to Oregon where it spent most of its time in the 80's or so. Somehow, the vehicle wound up at Hernando's Hideaway salvage in North Dakota in 2002-ish (a guess as that is when the Oregon title was signed and released). The vehicle was then auctioned off in 2014 where it moved to Mn thereafter. Jim Rawa bought the car from a gentleman there via a facebook post, and hauled it to NJ. It then traveled to Western NY when Tyler bought the car, and then I purchased the car from Tyler. Sometime between the 80's and 2014, the original motor was removed and replaced with a 1960 318. A picture of the original motor (supposedly) has followed the car around, and it shows the dual quad setup. According to the gentleman who sold it to Jim Rawa, a previous owner took the intake and carb setup. I am more inclined to believe that the entire engine was replaced as the block was not original.
Here's a photo of the photo mentioned above. Everything seems to look like it came from this car-- including the heater hoses being the same, etc. I've also included two photos from the facebook ad when the car was being sold. Unfortunately the front bumper (including the wings and that rare accessory bar) and a few other bits were parted out before Jim bought it.

Here's some photos of the frame prep that I've been working on. I POR-15'd the rails, painted the control arms, replaced the control arm bushings and ball joints. Replaced the strut rod bushings and cleaned up the torsion bars and anchors. I also am installing disc brakes on the front, so I bought a pair of spindles to clean up and install. Once my parts are here from rock auto, I'll finish assembling the brakes, replace the lines, etc. I'm also working on the steering components. I've ordered some new bushings for my tierods to test out. A work in progress, that's for sure.

Yeah, I think the problem was it wasn't the subject of the thread it was in. Even if it didn't come with the V800, you should build it that way! I may have a spare set of the 57 un-silenced air cleaners if you do. |

But things fell through after they were "stolen" or whatever. Feel free to send me a message and let me know what you're asking if you do have a spare set.
In the meantime, I'll run it on the 301 that I purchased until I can come up with all of the pieces I need to make it s dual quad (including cam etc). |

I did have a pile of boxes waiting for me when we got home. The brake parts I ordered prior to vacation was like experiencing Christmas all over again.
We packed the new bearings into the races on the slotted and cross-drilled rotors I bought, loaded the calipers, and bolted on the new brake hoses. Tomorrow I'll pick up some coated brake lines and see if I can't get that all finished up. I have new rubber bumpers for the control arms on order. They should be here soon, and then I can finish up the suspension.

I see the Charger or whatever is still there from the last time I visited Jeff's (his Dad's?) garage, maybe 4-ish yrs ago now?
We like to go to Glenora winery, and you're not far, so we try to make a 2-fer out of it.
Anyhow, interestingly the 57 Sport Sub I also bought from Rawa (sight unseen) came from Neil Freman (before he sold & scrapped out his 'yard) in MT and it had also supposedly been from Western Oregon. Mine had the same color scheme, in reverse - cream white with red stripe. Rawa said he bought it for the factory A/C, which he removed before he sold me the car. It did still have the all-tinted glass, and 301 2bbl engine. Alas, it had very extensive roof-edge and rear-end rust, which he never told me about before my car pickup guy went & got it and brought it to Central NY. It would have needed a whole new roof, which I explored with Big M John, but just not feasible. So I ended it trading it to a body shop/Mopar restorer I know for a paint job on another car. He stuck it in a garage near Norwich NY, and he was trying to sell it (for parts?) when he decided not to restore it, and afaik it's still there. There may be some pics of it on here somewhere, circa 2007 or so.

How many 57 Plym Sport Sub wagons could there be left around central NY? Last I knew the '57 wagon was in an old building in the little town of Oxford, right next to the creek/river. Also had an Cuda AAR 340 there, he had/has? a lot of 60s Mopars, originally from Long Island but moved to just N of Norwich to buy a shop specialized in Mopar muscle cars. The 57 wagon had rare all-tinted original glass. Might be good for parts, rest of the body, except the rear which had stuck out of a barn for like 30 yrs, was very good. Have his contact info if anyone wants PM. |

Location: Ny | It was too cold this weekend to do much in the shop. We have a 150,000 btu salamander, but, with 9 degree temps and a wind chill of -10, the kerosene heater isn't very effective. Today was around 20 and so we tackled a few small detail things. I'm still waiting on my idler arm bushing and fuel line to be shipped, but I installed some new polyurethane snubbers for the control arms and outer tierods grease boots.
Next step is masking and prepping the firewall for paint. Can't wait!

I've got about 2/3 done before my hands cramped up and I called it quits/dinner time. Tomorrow's weather is supposed to be similar-- mid-50's. Looks like I'll be back in the shop to finish sanding and get her masked/primed. Photo is before scuffing.
Also my dynamat order came in today. Looks like I'll be reinsulating the firewall after she's painted.

Thanks for the reply and confirmation jessica,,
Was sure i recognised the place, as i visited and collected a 59 chrysler they stored for me which i collected and drove to Tulsa in 2007 for the unearthing,, That top garage had a 58 plymouth convertible in there along with a 57 chrysler and a couple Cuda's, as well as a couple 57 plymouths outside.. A member here bought the 58 convertible after i passed the info onto him several years ago now..
Yeah i knew Jim in NJ had it and sold it to Tyler in NY who sold it to you...

Painted the firewall tonight, and love how it has turned out. I also dropped the inner fenders and core support off at a local sandblasted. The drivers side was covered in asphalt so that seemed to be an easier option. I should get them back next week and then I can paint them. I'll be ready to drop in the new motor in hopefully within the next couple weeks.

Location: Ny | There are a couple things going on here. The build sheet was taped to the data tag when going through the assembly line from the factory. This is where you see the primer red beneath the white. I preserved this feature by masking over top of the factory tape mark. My tape was a little wider than theirs so some of the white shows, but I am okay with that. It's a distant memory of the firewall that used to be white. |

The white has since worn off due to sun fade and weather extremities. I prefer the coral body so I painted the firewall to match. She will get a white roof later down the road. |

With the wide array of options and the manufacturing processes of the time, it's a miracle they ever made a dollar on any of these cars.
My dad took the body tag on my Chrysler and polished it. Heh.

| Glad to hear it, those are the AC Delco bushing I think which is stiffer than stock. Notice the rubber is more glossy than normal. I will be shut down for the week also due to the cold, I can't polish antennas either. I think I am going with the scarebird brackets... I am putting a 392 Hemi in my 57 Dodge Royal It looks like I am going with 15 inch rims and I can go with HD 3500 Ram calipers... huge pistons for some insane stopping power. it looks like the HD 3500 Dodge ram van calipers which are dual piston might work also for even more power. I picked up some Dodge spinner hub caps and they said they are repop 15 inchers. I will go check but I am done blasting and painting with these today.

Location: Ny | It was 56 yesterday so I took the opportunity to etch prime my inner fenders and core support. They're ready for some black satin paint. I also bought some copper nickel brake lines and placed a small order to Gary Goers for some rubber do-dads under the hood. Not much progress lately as we have all been fighting a stomach bug/virus of sorts. I've also been putting extra hours in at work to put some sneakers on this chick. She'll be getting a set of wide white radials.

Location: bountiful, Utah | Congratulations on such a great car, and such a great labor of love you are contributing to it! My dad bought a 57 Plymouth 9 pass Sport Suburban new when I was just a kid. It was ginger and white, and your car reminds me so much of his. I have wonderful memories riding in the 3rd seat all the way to Utah as a 10 year old and having every trucker toot their horn as we passed. They responded so well to my arm gesture back then, plus rear facing 3 rd seats were a new novelty in 1957. I have a 57 DeSoto Firesweep Explorer wagon that is next on my list to restore. It is as close as I'm going to get to the Sport Suburban. I was raised in the Scotia, Burnt Hills area on Route 50. Are you anywhere close?
Kindest regards,
Scott in Utah |

My kids rode in the 3rd seat of my Satellite wagon for quite a while when they were younger and enjoyed being able to interact with other people on the road. Once they reached teenage years though, the novelty of it wore off.... |

Location: Ny | My heart has always been with Desoto, but I wasn't able to come across one that I liked or met my budget. So I settled for the most badass Plymouth I could find.
My kids are looking forward to sitting in the rear-facing seat. The floors need a little work back there before they can climb in, though.
Right now my progress is slowly going backwards. I tore apart my brakes to swap the spindles to the other side. With the calipers at the rear of rotor they won't clear the bump-stop brace on the frame. Rather than cutting a notch to accommodate my caliper, I'm just going to switch out the spindle sides and mount the caliper to the front of the rotor. Easy enough to do, but frustrating all the same.
Failure= knowledge, right?

Location: Ny | I think that the 58 has a sway bar and maybe the Fury does for 57? My wagon does not have one. Yet.
I'm back in business with the brakes. Swapped out the spindles and bolted it back together with the calipers mounted forward of the rotor. Now I can run my copper nickel brake lines. I'll be picking up a proportioning valve for it this week. SSBC makes one that includes the brake light switch which is nice.
As far as the strut rod is concerned, it does need to be cut to accommodate the disc setup. That's an easy chop at an angle on the end with the cutoff wheel.
Tranny is next on my list, and then I should be (hopefully) putting the motor in it this week or next.

I hope everyone had a nice Easter weekend. I celebrated mine with a sinus infection and the flu. Pulled the transmission from her perch, and remained in one piece despite it looking like a massacre happened beneath the car. I dropped the ratchet on my forehead (square between the eyes, too), and nearly put another hole through the floor pan with my elbow when the cotter pin decided to let go as I was removing it from the e-brake cable pin. Then the transmission slid off the jack sideways and bled all over the floor. Just one of those days, I guess!

I'm still fairly congested, but spent some time in the shop. Jeff helped me cut the idler arm out (the bolt was seized) and pressed the new bushing in. Thanks again for the bushing, Mike! I've got to get a new bolt and then I can install it back in the car.

Location: Ny | Went to spring Carlisle this weekend and picked up a fair amount of goodies for the wagon. I picked up a bumper wing front bumper from a friend, a brake booster that's not torn and still pliable, some air filters and a an air cleaner to cut down to make half of my dual quad setup (I have the other half here at the house). We also picked up some more shop supplies. Shows like these are perfect for that: $15 for a bag of 200 shop rags, cast blast, etc.
I am still recovering from surgery I had last week, but the weather is nearing perfection and the days are getting longer. Hoping to get more progress done so I can button up the front end and get the rear up in the air.

Location: North of the 49th | Hi
For the lid I salvaged the Air cleaner "base" plate from the front of the silencer can this gave me the outside seat for the air filter , I cut a flat piece of sheet stock and formed the depression for the wingnut and then I trimmed out the salvaged base plate and butt welded then together. For the transition inside the original lid which is now the air cleaner body I took some flat sheet stock, rolled the end and then brought the ends together to form the tube, slipped the tube through the "body" and welded around the "roll" inside. The wingnut support strut was salvaged from the original can and the welded in place . The original filters fit like they should.
I' not sure how Jessica will be doing hers for the wagon but that's how I did it....

Cleaning up the firewall some more. I decided that I'd rather salvage my original firewall grommets than use Gary's. His are a nice go-to if yours are missing or broken, but I think the originals are cleaner overall. A friend suggested using gojo to clean them up, and that seems to work nicely.

Location: Ny | Took on a new project: the brake booster. My original booster bellows were badly torn. I found a unit with decent rubber at Carlisle, and decided to make the swap. My zinc plating, while dull and lifeless on the outside, looks excellent inside. I bought some cadmium (gold zinc) paint from Eastwood to try out, so once that is here, I can zip everything back together. As for the O-rings inside my booster, everything was still soft and pliable. I cleaned everything up and gave it a nice coating of lithium grease to help it seal-- especially where that copper valve fitting is. Has anyone tried the zinc aerosol from Eastwood?

Location: Ny | It looks great. Especially in comparison to the corroded, dirty original anodizing. There is a trick to getting the chromatic colors to "lay right" as they are supposed to be painted in random areas. It's best to test it out on a spare piece before painting the original, just to get the hang of it. |

Location: Ny | Torsion bars are back in the wagon as of last night. I forgot what a PITA that job is. I'm sure I'll need to adjust and level everything out once my motor is bolted up. I painted my master cylinder last night as well. Looks like it will be a snug fit below the booster, but it will work. Once that's bolted up I can run my new lines. More updates this weekend.

Location: So. Cal | You might consider running a master with a remote reservoir. That is what I am using. It will make working on it so much easier. I am using an iron master from a guy on Ebay, but there are aluminum Mopar masters too. They are all 2 bolt and require an adapter that is available from Mopar Performance. |

This was formerly a drum to drum master, and we converted it to disc to drum. I have decent clearance now. Still have yet to run my lines and make a bracket for my SSBC proportioning valve. Perhaps this weekend that'll get done.
