Location: Redwood City, California | So, I have this 57 New Yorker which experiences brake lock up. Have to press between D and R back and forth to get it to eventually unlock so I can drive forward. In reverse, put your foot on the brake and it locks up pretty quickly. What am I looking at for a fix? Thanks. |

Location: Chestertown, NY ( near Lake George) | You are looking at common complaints for this, I found several issues as have many others on the forum, do search for brakes locking, brakes not releasing, others I am sure will also jump in here.Btw, this not an e brake problem.

Location: So. Cal | Most of the time, it happens because the clips that hold the shoe on are missing or not working. This is especially true for lockups that happen in reverse. |

Location: 33844 | Very common for our cars brakes to lock up. Wheel-cylinder leaks are usually the reason (must be repaired) , or maybe just dampness after sitting for weeks (must be driven more).
And if lock-up only in reverse- it is the rear-most shoe only - due to the location of the anchors. |

I agree about the dampness. After sitting a few days during rain or high humidity, I can count on the right front wheel locking up on the first light application of the brakes. It only happens when moving slowly. I expect it so I make a first stop from about 20 MPH and after one time the brakes work fine until the next time the car sits when there is a lot of moisture in the air.
Just to clarify, it's more of a grabbing front right brake that will lock the wheel but it will release when the car is stopped.
I have new shoes, cylinders, hoses, steel lines and M/C. |

I'm glad to of read this.. I've had all new shoes, cylinders and hoses fitted a while ago. Recently after sitting for a week or 2, the front right brake will grab really abruptly until a couple brakes at the speed you mentioned. We have had more than a month of rain and high humidity. |
