I am consolidating info on the "702" heater system used in the 55-56 Plymouths, Dodges, Desoto and some(?) Chryslers

The main components include the heater core (PN 1605 274), the heater valve (PN 1688 946) and the valve to heater "U" hose (PN 1605 532) as labeled in the diagram below.

Heater Core - PN 1605 274 :

I have no idea about a current source for the heater core. I assume that a good radiator shop could build a new one, i.e. replace the core. No idea about cost.

Heater Valve - PN 1688 946

The heater valve might be available in the aftermarket. Nathan (PowerFlite) suggested that there was a NAPA repair kit. Not sure about the details on that one.

One aftermarket heater valve:

Heater valve to heater core U-hose - PN 1605 532

Regarding the heater valve to heater core "U" hose, Terrance (71Charger_fan) suggested: "I found a curved heater hose (Gates 18701/NAPA NBH 10701) that, with trimming, made a decent stand in for my original looped hose from the heater control valve to the heater core."

Previously, 57Chizler suggested that a Dayco 86050 works for the U-hose replacement:

If anyone can fill in some of the blanks, please reply to this post.

For fun I checked my local "FLAPS" (friendly local auto parts store) ("LORDCO" in my case - think O'Reillys) for the Dayco 86050. They didn't have that but they said it crossed to an AC Delco and they had one in the store. So I ran some errands and picked it up on the way home. An AC Delco 14075S. Cost me just over CND$15 with taxes.

I came home and tried the hose against the existing bulging hose (yeech) and it looks like it will fit fine with maybe a bit of trimming. Then I came in the house and put AC Delco 14075S in to Google and got several hits. One was Rock Auto. At Rock Auto the hose shows as CDN$7.72 but with shipping to my home, it would add CDN$7.53 for a total of CDN$15.25 with delivery by March 5. Shipping to my US mail box would be cheaper (CDN$3.76) and faster (Feb.23) but the mail box company would charge me US$4 per item and I'd be back at $15 plus. So picking it up today wasn't a bad idea. Good to know that Rock Auto might have been a good option though.

I forgot to mention that I also checked with my closest NAPA for that NAPA hose. It was going to be about CDN$15 plus taxes to I figured that I would try the AC Delco since nobody seems have posted about it. I think the hoses are all made by the same people. The markings on the side of the AC Delco hose are the same type as the GATES rad hose(s) that I bought.

I am leaving out the door to go on vacation so I don't have a lot of time, but do a search on this Forwardlook site and you will find instructions on how to rebuild the heater valve with new seals using the kit from Napa.

I did a Forum Search on "rebuilding heater valve" and a few threads came up. This one (below) was the "best" but even it didn't have details about which NAPA part people were trying to use.

This thread: http://www.forwardlook.net/forums/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=41712&...

However, there was a link in that thread to JCAuto that contained a link to a Ranco part: Ranco 1605280 (supposedly equivalent to the 1688 946) and that lead to a link to Detroit Muscle and a 1" seal (which might be the ticket(??)):

https://www.detroitmuscletechnologies.com/ranco-water-valve-repair-s...

"DMT brand new water valve stem top seal repair kit. This is a brand new, high quality part. Correct material. Soft, pliable, stainless wire crimp ring. The seals sold by the big box auto parts stores / chains are THICK and hard.
The larger seal is 1.000" in diameter. This fits almost every make and model Ranco valve including part number on your water valve matches the part numbers in the list below." (List includes the 1688 946)

You could just look for it using your make & year on NAPA. If you do, you will find BK 6601000 for $10. I'm not sure about his claim as to using their version vs. the NAPA version.

Thanks Nathan. Sorry, I missed your reply until I just checked this thread today for the PNs for the valve.

The Balkamp BK 6601000 is a US NAPA number and doesn't work in NAPA Canada (but I could order one from the US and get it shipped to my US mail drop).

In the meantime, I found these:

I was reviewing the difference/similarities between the Mopar heater valve and the Volvo 673452 Heater control valve, and found evidence that the Mopar valve was made by Ranco and that Ranco was bought by CVI in Sweden at some point. The Volvo 673452 Heater control, valve is much the same or likely identical to the Mopar valve and was used as late as 1966 in Chargers.

REFERENCE: http://www.chargersourceguide.com/heatercontrolvalve.html

CVI is down due to a flood but they do list the valve but at US$194: http://www.cvi-automotive.se/en/articles/2.14517.44476/heater-contr...

I think that I will try the eBay Volvo valve for US $114.50. Just bought it:

https://www.ebay.ca/itm/Heater-Control-Valve-673452-fits-Volvo-122-P...

That's the good news (maybe ). In reviewing 71Charger's thread about his 1955 Plaza today, I saw this photo and my heart sank a bit. ("Are you sh*tting me? The valve is installed from the engine bay side!!?? Not happy).

Then I went out to have a second look at mine. Something is obviously leaking (and therefore if I have to remove the heater box/plenum, then I might as well buy a new valve not try to repair the existing valve). Now that I know what I am looking for, I can see the two long screws coming from the engine bay side. FUGG.

That's pretty cool. Let me know how that Volvo valve works out. That may be an easy solution to replacing these things.

We have used the Volvo valves here in Sweden for a long time and they work just fine - it's a Ranco valve.
the Y-pipe will tell that its not the original valve, but that can be fixed with distances and a rubber gasket.

I think it will be fine. As I found out and Sven confirmed, the Volvo valve was made by Ranco and might have been and HTR-100 (??) that was also used by Chrysler Corp.

As I suggested Ranco was bought by CVI in Sweden some time ago.

Sven: Good to confirm that the Volvo valve works in Chrysler products. Thanks.

Any idea whether CVI is back in business after their flood?

Also I am not sure what you mean by "can be fixed with distances and a rubber gasket".

The original heater valves for MoPar usually have a mounting plate that "hides" the "Y-pipe" inside the car.

In the first photo, note that the "Y-pipe" is visible in the engine bay.
In the second photo, note the original valve mounting plate.

With longer screws and a thick rubber gasket (foam rubber) and two distances the valve will be hidden and only two pipes protruding instead of the "Y-pipe"

CVI is and will be closed for a longer period http://www.cvi-automotive.se/sv

Thanks for the reply and explanation Sven. Got it. Thanks.

Nice photos. Especially (for me) the one that shows the valve to be a Ranco Type H16, not HTR-100 or whatever I thought it was.

Based on the Ranco Type H16, I did a Google search and found a fantastically detailed info post (that I have now captured for future reference). I know understand how the big 1"+ seal works.

http://www.sw-em.com/Heater_Control_Valve.htm

It includes this listing which includes the 56 Dodge and Volvo 122 numbers that I was chasing (I've highlighted them):

(It also gives me hope that I could find a valve locally at the Old Car Center that caters to 55-57 Chevies and Fords (based on the Ford listing)

Hope is a good thing.

Reality is something else

Ford's version of the Ranco H16 is slightly different:

"1953-56 Ford heater control valve, NOS! B5A-18502-A
This is a NOS firewall mounted heater valve assembly for 1953-56 Ford. This is a Ranco H16 valve. Ranco was an OEM supplier to Ford and this is the same valve that is in the Ford boxes. New part, never installed. Excellent condition. Ford part #: B5A-18502-A"

US$207 - a bit more (LOL) than I paid for the Volvo H16 valve with the proper configuration

Sure rub it in. The BK 6601000 number isn't a good number with NAPA Canada and NAPA US won't ship out side of the lower 48. Even when I try to get them to ship to Point Roberts, Washington (state), the NAPA website won't accept my Canadian billing address to go with my Canadian VISA. I am stuck. I've re-contacted NAPA Canada to see if they can kick Balkamp into action.

I just wanted a seal to fix my OE valve when I take it out to replace it with the Volvo valve when it arrives from Taiwan (or wherever).

I know the feeling Dave - I usually buy 5 - 10 kits everytime a friend visits USA. No other way for us here in Sweden.
There should be someone on the forum that could do you a favor though....

I heard back from the local NAPA distribution warehouse today. They will be able to bring in as many as I want from Balkamp/NAPA US for CDN$10.99 each plus 12% taxes but no shipping. I am contacting those that I know with 55-61 Mopars local to me (and elsewhere) in Canada to see if they want me to order them one when I place the order tomorrow (I physically have to drive out to the warehouse (about 20 minutes away on freeway).

UPDATE: I ended up getting a firm committment for 7 kits from locals and those on Vancouver Island so I placed an order for 10. 2 to 3 week delivery (with their normal Balkamp US order).

ADDITIONAL: Looking at old photos of my engine bay, I see that the heater valve is NOT inside the heater box/ducting, making replacement more or less a piece of cake (Yippee!!)

Based on 71Charger_fan's photo of his 55 Plaza heater hose, I thought that the valve was under the heater/ducting:

Once I see mine in the photo, I turned 71Charger_fan's photo and it all makes sense now. (Duh)

Glorious day out today (17C and sunny). Had the Dodge out playing with the carpet install (cutting and gluing down some padding). While it was out I did a few other things, including checking out the location of the heater valve outside the heater ducting/box. Confirmed - see photo below.

While I was playing in the passenger footwell, I noticed how much the heater valve attachment screws protrude into the passenger footwell. Where were the liability lawyers/engineers when that was designed. Looks like a foot puncture waiting to happen. Needless to say, when I change the heater control valve, I will fix that issue (somehow)(shorten the screw and put a rubber cap on it).

Not a knock on the 56 Custom Royal 315 Poly Lancer that is for sale but I am curious what is up with the heater.

I do NOT see the heater control valve but I do see a blanking plate where the valve should be and what seems to be direct, uncontrolled, hose links to/from the engine and the heater core, i.e. no control valve and no "U" hose.

I guess they must have been cold-blooded folks who liked their heat full on, even in the summer.

I think that I will try the eBay Volvo valve for US $114.50. Just bought it

Well that was March 3rd. Surprise surprise, it came in today's mail, from China. I wasn't expecting it yet.

Looks good to me. I tested the adjustment lever and how it moves the inner stopper/valve. I also now see how the pneumatic/bourdon tube mechanism is probably supposed to work. Price was better than anything that I saw and delivery was pretty quick.

Working link to the Volvo 122 Ranco H16 repair info (the previous one I posted failed) - (useful if you buy the Ranco Seal from NAPA as a Balkamp BK 6601000) (I recently bought 10 for locals):

Found these diagrams in the 1955-56 Plymouth FSM pdf and thought that they looked like 56 Dodge as well so I captured them and thought that I would post them here.

Just got my rebuilt heater valve back from Jim Tucker and it looks great. Does anybody know where to get the thick gasket for it?

The PN for that item 41 mounting gasket is 1641 674. Searching for "1641674 heater control gasket" ( and "GASKET, Temperature Control Mounting 1641 674") did not show up anything useful.

I think that you could make the gasket from some 3/16" or 1/4" thick neoprene rubber using the old gasket as a template. Or try the folks that took over Gary Goers business (?). It's not about sealing the hoses and preventing coolant leaks. It is about sealing the engine bay smells, etc. from the passenger compartment.

By the way the old one on my car didn’t look like the one in the diagram. It had 2 holes like the Buick.

I had said to use the old one as a template, not the diagram as the template.

I was wrong about the thickness (much thicker than I imagined)

That said, I think that the 53 Buick one on eBay will work because the Buick heater control valve (photo below) looks like a Ranco, just like our early Mopar valves. I ordered a 53 Buick gasket for when I install my new Volvo Ranco valve.

Several months and at least one virus-related pandemic later, I find both the 53 Buick grommet and the Volvo Ranco valve at the same time and try them together. Fits fine.

Where to get the HVG513 Grommet:

What is going on with my new Heater Valve?

I move the heater control from COOL to WARM and I get nothing. I repeat and then I get heat. So I leave the control in the full WARM position until the next time.

Several days later, I start the car (like today), take it for a short spin. No heat (fan on full). So I move the heater control to COOL and then WARM (again) and I get heat.

I have not extended the compensation tube coil. Is that the issue?

???

At suggestion of Del S. I am rolling out the capillary temperature compensation tube coil so it can be installed in the plenum, behind the metal plug. That might fix the heater operation issue (??). Or NOT??

My question is should I leave a coil of the capillary temperature compensation tube coil still coiled a bit (one or two coils) when it is inside the plenum or ???

The owner's manual is silent on this.

This coil:

Dave, did you sort the issue? The capillary tube doesn't require a coil in the box to function properly, but a coil or two also shouldn't impact the functionality if you need to take up some slack if the line is too long keeping in mind the radius doesn't kink the tube. I'm curious how you fared since I suspect I'll be replacing my 1956 Coronet valve soon. As of now, the control cable is well seized, and I suspect it's in the valve but won't know until I get under there this weekend. Hopefully something as simple as cleaning and lubricating the cable and valve lever will solve the issue.

Another bit of exploring I did yesterday before I came across your thread found that the 673452 / 1688946 valve is also marketed as fitting Mopars with 700, 701, 702, and 704 heaters along with 1950 - 1970 Volvo Amazon, PV, Duett, and 123GT models; Apparently 1963 - 1964 Saab 95 and 96 use it too.

Looking at the 1955 - 1958 Mopar parts catalog, and the valve is the same part number 1-48-854 for 1955 - 1958 Mopars with a 702, 704, 705, and 800 model heaters with the 1956 Dodge having model 702 as you've pictured above.

Here's a valve off Amazon, likely the same unit you purchased:
Here is a link to one version of the valve: https://www.amazon.com/Focreedy-Control-Chrysler-Plymouth-1688946/dp...

Thanks. I basically forgot to finish that one. I got distracted by my successful neutral starting lockout switch install. So thank for the reminder.

I rolled the coil out gently and the last one or two coils are like 1/2" from that metal plug on the inside heater plenum. I think that I will just pop the plenum plug off and roll the tube out and into the plenum. There is a slight slot for the tube to duck under the edge of the plug (which I will reinstall)

The valve that you show on Amazon is the same as the one that I got on eBay out of China. Price looks good.

I might get to the heater valve coil today or tomorrow.

Priority today is new pads on my wife's car front discs (down to 1/8" meat left (Oops))

Dave, for what it's worth, I popped the box plug, and my tube has five coils inside the box. They are spread out about 1/8" apart.
