WTB. 270 c.i. hemi super red ram 55-56 dodge. doesn't have to be running but complete
Just so you are aware, the only Dodge Hemi ("double-rocker") V8 in 1956 was the 315 hemi in the D500 cars. Otherwise all of the 56 Dodge V8 engines were single-rocker polyspherical head engines, either the 315 Polys in the Royals and Custom Royals or the 270 poly in the Coronet (a step up from the flat-head 6).
So if you are looking for a 270 hemi, you are restricted to 1955.

Location: Northern Illinois | hi again 56d, im trying to learn quite a bit on these older engines (very familiar with small and big block engines 66 and up) from what I read, the 55 had 3 different engines choises a 6 cyl, poly 270 and hemi 270? is that right? am I using terminology wrong? the brochure you sent me said I should have the super red ram engine, is that considered a hemi? lots of information to learn. thanks!!!! |

Location: Mid Michigan | If I'm not mistaken 55 dodge 270 poly and hemi as well as 6 cylinder used a floating motor mount.
56 dodge 270/315 poly and hemi use a pair of motor mounts .
Like a modern v 8 motor

| For 1955 it went
Super Red Ram - 270 CID Hemi heads
Red Ram - 270 CID Poly Heads
Both are the same block, and the heads interchange along with the manifolds. |

For 1955 you want this
Specifically these which show that the Super Red Ram was the 270 hemi and the Red Ram was the 270 poly.
And if you find a 270 Super Red Ram hemi, you can turn something like this:
Into this beautiful "Super-powered" Super Red Ram with a four barrel carb (local to me):
(NOTE: Only the early 270 Super Red Rams got the embossed valve covers, later they were smooth with a decal)

| Super-Powered Super Red Ram is a 1956 Thing, not from 1955. So technically you couldn't turn a super red ram into a super-powered red ram, as they aren't from the same year.
1956 Dodge Fact Book
Super-Powered Super Red Ram - Aircraft Type (AKA HEMI) - This later became known as the D-500 engine. It was an option on all Dodge V8's in 1956
Super Red Ram - Aircraft Type (AKA HEMI) - This was your standard engine that went into the royal, and custom royal
RED RAM - 270 Poly version from 55 - came stock on the Coronet V8
Get-away 6 - Came on Coronet 6 only
This is all from the 1956 Dodge Facts book.

You are correct that there was no "super-powered" Super Red Ram per se in 1955. My bad. But there was the 4 bbl option for the Super Red Ram which normally had a 2 bbl and 183 hp. Adding the 4 bbl took the hp to 193.
As for the 56 American Dodge Engines, sorry, there was only one Dodge hemi in 1956 and it was the D500 engine which wasn't called anything else, just D500. No Super, not duper, just D500. *ALL* the other 56 Dodge engines, both the 315 and 270 were poly engines.
As you suggested once it was made available in 1956, the D500 engine was available across the American Dodge line, including station wagons.
The 56 American Dodge "Super-powered" Super Red Ram was the 230 hp 4 bbl 315 cubic inch poly engine, as used in the Bonneville endurance testing and the early California Hwy Patrol pursuit cars (before they bought 260 hp D500-equipped cars). This engine was optional in the American Custom Royal, Royal and Coronet
The 56 American Dodge Super Red Ram was the 2bbl 315 cubic inch poly engine with 218 hp - the base V8 in the 56 Dodge Royal and Custom Royal, optional in the Coronet
The 56 American Dodge Red Ram was the 2bbl 270 cubic inch poly engine - probably 175 hp - only available in the 56 Coronet.
Poly head Engines:
Year Brand Size Horsepower* Torque
1955 Plymouth 241 157 217
1955 Plymouth 259 167 231
1955 Dodge 270 175 240
1955 Chrysler 301 188 275
1956 Dodge 315 218 309
1957 Dodge/DeSoto 325 245 320
1957 Dodge (4bbl) 325 265 355
REFERENCE: https://www.allpar.com/mopar/poly.html
"For 1956, Dodge increased the displacement to 315 cu in (5.2 L) with a longer 3.80 in (96.5 mm) stroke and a taller raised-deck block and now with a polyspherical heads—no longer a Hemi. But the optional high-performance D-500 version of this engine had a four-barrel carburetor and a larger valved Dodge hemisherical combustion chambered head. Also, a "race only" package called the D-500-1 or DASH 1 was available with a special aluminum dual four barrel intake that sported a pair of Carter WCFB caburetors similar to the ones on the Chrysler 300B and DeSoto Adventurer. This engine utilized the same cylinders heads as the base D-500 model."
