I removed the dash speaker from my 1959 Windsor the other night to replace one of the radio light bulbs. In doing so, I discovered a fully wired bulb socket laying on top of the radio. It has black tape over the end. The tape appears to be very old - it's petrified, so I'm guessing it's been there since new.

Does anyone know the purpose of this bulb socket?

I know it's NOT for the radio. The radio has it's own pair of bulb sockets that are powered from the radio itself. I suppose it could be for a different radio option, but I don't know.

Also, It's not for the clock. I added an NOS clock a couple years ago and there was a very similar bulb socket right behind the clock.

Orange wires are usually for instrument panel lighting.

Could it be that the car is predisposed for Auto-Pilot? Check for more Contacts not in use....

Interesting idea. I've only once ever seen a 59 Windsor with Auto Pilot. The control knob was mounted on the top of the steering column. I don't know if it was lighted, but even then, this wire doesn't seem like it would reach.

Nope, those are already serviced by their own bulbs.

Not to laugh at you, but I must say this gave me a good laugh. The weird things you find under the covers on these cars just amazes me. A light that has no use so it was simply taped off whole. Maybe it was wired wrong in the factory with too many sockets and to pass inspection they simply taped off the socket.
