I have a 1958 318" engine and transmission in my 56 plymouth. When I move up to highway speed, it seems as though something is slightly holding the car back, after the transmission shifts twice. Transmission does not go into a kick down/passing gear. Should it?
thank you

Location: So. Cal | If it shifts twice, it must be a torqueflite, not a powerflite, correct? Is the kickdown linkage for the transmission installed and adjusted properly? Yes, it should downshift if you floor it going 40mph in 3rd gear. |

thank you for reply. I tested the car today and floored the gas pedal at 40 mph and I did not feel a downshift. Yes it is a torque flite. Is the kickdown linkage for the trans. installed and adjusted properly? This I dont know. I need to give my mechanic the instructions for adjusting the linkage properly. I see you have a 58 dodge, adjustment techniques should be the same in your factory service manual. Can you photo or someway get the info off those pages and email to me at jerrybev1@yahoo.com?
Or, if this info is available on this website, could you explain to me how to search for it? I don't know how.
thank you

The fact that you have a '58 engine/trans in a '56 car might make the linkage adjustment non-standard. Basically, what you want is the transmission lever full forward with the carburetor at warm idle and the lever full back at WOT. |
