Hi everyone,

I've got a friend who has a '57 Plymouth with a manual steering.
He thinks that it's in need of a rebuild because he has about 2 inches free play at the steering wheel at full stop.

I'm not sure this 2 inches free play at full stop is abnormal.
I have about the same free play on my '58 with power steering, while my steering box has been rebuilt and the rubber connection replaced.

What's your feedback ?

Thanks.

Free play is only relevant ON CENTER. There are so many possible sources that are magnified the further one goes from center. Drag link wear, center link wear, tie rid wear, idler arm wear, ball joint wear, and of course wear within the box itself. Follow a shop manual to find and correct excessive free play.
