When the 55 Desoto is in neutral, there is a distinct wrrrrrrr-ing sound. Very audible..

When shifting into drive, car sounds fine. Then I shift back into neutral and the wrrrrr-ing sound is back.

Shifting into reverse, the wrrr-ing sound is gone, but now I'm hearing a hissing sound. Also quite audible.

Any idea what is causing these noises ?

Ron

Not sure about the PF, but on some newer transmissions, similar sounds are caused by a rapidly cycling pressure regulator valve. The sound is variously described as a whine, buzz, moan, etc. This is more of an annoyance than a real problem.
