Location: Lower Mainland BC | Assuming that somebody might need this (including me - I just picked up a used 56 D500 Ball and Trunion joint - with a nice pliable dust cover), I found the factory procedure in my hardcopy 56 Dodge Factory Service Manual (FSM) (on pages 374 and 375) and also in the pdf version of the 57 Dodge FSM (bages 270 and 271 in the hardcopy and 271/530 and 272/530 in the pdf). Looks like it is possible to replace the dust cover boot *without* removing the trunion pin and housing.
Might be handy for somebody.
